Zach Cregger’s 2026 Resident Evil film brings the games’ perspective and sense of play into a new story, rather than retelling one game plot. Its signature technique is a shifting third-person follow camera: the protagonist stays central while the wide view shows the world around him and shifts with his attention. First-person weapon-mounted shots add another familiar game perspective.
How the camera makes the film feel game-like
Cregger has described using a wide lens to keep the surroundings visible around a centered protagonist. The actor and camera operator move in sync, so the framing seems to respond to where the character looks. Rather than locking the audience into a fixed over-the-shoulder view, the camera follows and adjusts as his attention changes.

“Having that third-person view that is constantly shifting as the character is shifting their attention is really immersive,” Cregger told PetaPixel in an interview at San Diego Comic-Con. He said the approach reflects games he has played since childhood. The sources describe the technique, but do not identify a camera body or lens model.

Third-person follow camera
The effect is not simply a character walking through a frame. The camera’s movement makes the viewer track the protagonist through the environment, while keeping enough of that environment in view to anticipate what may be around him. It borrows the spatial logic of a game camera without suggesting that every scene uses the same setup.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
First-person weapon views
The film also shifts into first person. PetaPixel reports that small cameras were attached to a shotgun or machine gun for some shots, bringing the weapon into the foreground as the viewer looks from the character’s perspective. Those moments contrast with the more expansive third-person framing; they are another part of the film’s visual vocabulary, not evidence that the whole movie adopts a first-person view.
A new story built around the structure of play
Cregger said he wanted to follow a character from point A to point B, a structure he associates with the games, and tell a new story that could happen in the Resident Evil world. In a PlayStation Blog interview published April 30, 2026, he placed the film alongside the world of Resident Evil 2: it follows a different person on a mission during a disastrous night in Raccoon City, rather than bringing the game’s characters into the plot.

- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
“I wanted to do a movie that was following a character from point A to point B, because that’s what those games do so well,” he said. He described the challenge as trying to “write a game as a movie.” The result, as he explained it, takes inspiration from how a game moves a player through a world without adapting an existing game storyline scene by scene.

The journey also borrows pressures familiar from survival-horror play. Cregger described the protagonist’s weapons changing over the course of the story: he starts with a pistol, finds a shotgun, and eventually gets an MP5. Ammunition and injury matter along the way, echoing the decisions players make when supplies are limited.

- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.

Locations change as the character advances, and Cregger said each new environment brings its own danger. The Atlantic’s September 2026 feature interprets these shifts as level-like settings that help sustain pace and dread. That is a critical reading of the film’s structure, rather than a stated production rule.
What Resident Evil 2 contributes
Cregger has said that Resident Evil 2 was the first game in the series he played, before the original. He recalled its resource-conservation demands: players had to keep track of ammunition and healing items. Those mechanics inform the film’s sense of vulnerability, even though its protagonist and mission are different.

He also pointed to Resident Evil 4 as an influence on the look of the healing items. Together, these details connect the film to more than one point in the series while leaving it room to tell its own story.

The film includes details that will be familiar to players, including typewriters associated with save areas, locks, and infected dogs. Cregger has also confirmed visual and thematic Easter eggs, including reproductions of healing items from Resident Evil 4. These are callbacks to the games, not a promise that the movie recreates a particular game sequence exactly.
Best Value
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Two ways the film translates the games
| What carries over | How it appears in the film |
|---|---|
| Camera perspective | A shifting third-person follow camera keeps the protagonist central; some shots instead use first-person views, including weapon-mounted cameras, as reported by PetaPixel. |
| Game structure | A point-to-point mission, changing environments, weapon progression, and pressure around ammunition and injury shape a new story alongside the world of Resident Evil 2. |
The two approaches work together: the camera borrows how games position a player in space, while the journey borrows how games unfold through changing dangers and constrained resources. Cregger’s stated aim is immersion through game-informed visual storytelling, not a direct adaptation of one plot.
