YouTube uses AI in two different ways: to help select videos that may interest each viewer, and to identify content that may violate its rules or the law. Recommendations are personalized and use several kinds of signals; moderation combines automated detection with human review. YouTube does not publish the complete formulas, model designs, or signal weights behind either system.
How does YouTube decide what videos to recommend?
YouTube says recommendations are meant to help each viewer find videos they want to watch and to support long-term viewer satisfaction—not simply to maximize watch time. Its public explanation groups signals into two broad categories: information about a viewer’s preferences and information about how people respond when a video is offered. Context, including a viewer’s device and the time of day, can also matter.

The signals YouTube identifies include watch and search history, subscriptions, likes and dislikes, “Not interested” selections, “Don’t recommend channel” selections, satisfaction surveys, interests, and patterns among viewers with similar habits. The company says its system learns from over 80 billion pieces of information it calls signals. That figure is YouTube’s description of the system’s inputs; it does not mean that every viewer is assessed against 80 billion separate personal attributes.

Signals differ by YouTube surface
| Surface | Signals YouTube highlights | What the surface is trying to do |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Watch history is a primary signal, alongside other preference and performance signals. | Suggest videos that may be relevant to that viewer. |
| Up Next | The video currently being watched is a main signal. | Find a relevant next video in the context of the current one. |
| Shorts | Viewer interests and response patterns; YouTube’s creator guidance also says recency may matter in the Shorts feed. | Surface Shorts that fit the viewer and the feed’s context. |
| Search | The query and engagement on results for that query. | Return results relevant to what the viewer searched for. |
This is a summary of YouTube’s public guidance, not a complete ranking specification. The same signal need not play the same role everywhere, and YouTube has not published exact weights for these signals.

Viewer interests and video response both matter
YouTube says it compares viewing habits among people with similar interests and looks for affinities with topics and formats. Its creator-facing explanation says the system aims to understand interests across Shorts, long videos, livestreams, and posts, while recognizing that a viewer may prefer one format over another. It also considers how viewers respond to a video when it is shown. A video’s performance is therefore not just a fixed score detached from its audience or surface.
For topics such as news, politics, medical information, and science, YouTube says it works to recommend authoritative videos. Human evaluators assess factors including expertise and reputation, the topic, and whether the video delivers on its promise; YouTube says greater authority leads to greater promotion. It does not disclose a numerical authority score or a precise weighting formula.
YouTube’s creator guidance says an individual video performing poorly does not automatically penalize an entire channel: it describes videos as being evaluated individually. It also says a viewer’s repeated choice to stop watching a channel or choose other channels may affect that channel’s longer-term performance for that viewer. This is YouTube’s explanation of its system, not a guarantee that any particular video or channel will receive a certain level of reach.

Does YouTube use AI to moderate videos?
Yes. YouTube says its automated review systems use machine learning and information from earlier human reviews to identify potentially policy-violating content. Automation helps the company handle the volume of content uploaded to the service, but a detection signal is not the same thing as a final enforcement decision.
YouTube describes a mixed workflow. In its words, “When our systems have a high degree of confidence that content is violative, they may make an automated decision.” In most cases, however, its systems flag potentially violating content for evaluation by a trained human reviewer. Reviewers apply the relevant policy or law. Human reviewers also consider appeals case by case.
A flag, a review, and an action are different stages
- Detection: An automated system or a human flag identifies material for possible review. A flag alone does not establish that a rule was broken.
- Assessment: A reviewer may consider the content and its context under the applicable policy or law. YouTube says its teams review flagged videos around the world.
- Outcome: Content may remain available, be age-restricted, or be removed. YouTube says educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic context can be relevant to whether material remains live.
- Appeal: YouTube says a human reviewer evaluates appeals individually.
Not every flagged item is removed, and the existence of automated detection does not mean every enforcement decision is made by a machine. The public descriptions do not establish that all detected content follows an identical route.

What the latest reported removal figures count
Google’s Transparency Report for January–March 2026 records the following removals. “Automated flagging” in the table means the first detection source listed in the report; it is not a count of every model classification or proof that an item was handled without human involvement after detection.
| Content type | Removed in Jan–Mar 2026 | Automated flagging as first detection source | Scope note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Videos | 9,804,544 | 9,658,039 | Videos removed during the quarter, grouped by first detection source. |
| Comments | 1,598,954,734 | 1,596,519,670 | The report excludes certain removals, including comments removed because a video or account was taken down. |
These are removal counts for one quarter, not rates of error, counts of all content reviewed, or measurements of the accuracy of YouTube’s AI. The report’s first-detection categories also do not show every human or automated step that may have followed detection.
Does YouTube remove videos automatically?
Sometimes, according to YouTube: its systems may make an automated decision when confidence that content violates policy is high. But YouTube says most potentially violating content is referred to a trained human reviewer, and its enforcement outcomes include leaving content live as well as restricting or removing it. A viewer report or automated flag is not, by itself, a removal decision.
Can I reset or adjust my YouTube recommendations?
You can influence recommendations by managing watch and search history and by giving direct feedback on videos or channels. YouTube says viewers can remove or turn off watch and search history, choose “Not interested” or “Don’t recommend channel,” and later clear that feedback. These controls change signals available to the recommendation system; they are not a promise of a particular Home feed.
- Remove history: Delete watch or search activity you do not want used as history.
- Pause history: Turn off watch or search history if you do not want future activity recorded in that history.
- Give feedback: Use “Not interested” on a recommendation or “Don’t recommend channel” when you want fewer suggestions from a channel.
- Undo feedback: YouTube says recommendation feedback can be cleared later.
YouTube notes that turning off and deleting watch history can leave Home without video recommendations if there is no significant prior watch history. It also says Google Account activity may influence recommendations and related experiences, so YouTube watch history is not necessarily the only relevant account activity.

In an announcement published May 27, 2026, YouTube said it was rolling out internal signals to identify significant photorealistic AI use and automatically label videos when creators had not disclosed it. YouTube said those labels alone do not change recommendation treatment or eligibility to earn money. An AI-related disclosure label should therefore not be read as a recommendation boost or penalty.
What YouTube’s explanations do—and do not—tell you
YouTube’s public material describes goals, broad signal categories, viewer controls, and the automated-plus-human moderation workflow. It does not disclose the full recommendation formula, model architecture, or precise signal weights. That distinction matters: a useful explanation of the system is not a way to calculate exactly why a specific video appeared, ranked where it did, or received an enforcement action.
For creators running a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream
Recommendation and moderation systems are separate from the software used to keep a stream running. For a 24/7 stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. This is a streaming workflow, not a way to influence YouTube’s recommendations or bypass its policies.
