How XRP Ledger Transaction Fees and Reserves Work With Embedded Wallets

On the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a transaction fee and an account reserve are different things. The fee is paid in drops and destroyed when a transaction is validated; the reserve is XRP that must remain in the account to satisfy its minimum-balance requirement and support the ledger objects the account owns.

An embedded wallet is an application-layer way to create or access an XRPL account and sign transactions. It does not change those protocol rules or impose one universal custody model. Your application must query the connected network, calculate reserve headroom, and clearly show whether the user, a sponsor, or both are responsible for each cost.

What an embedded wallet changes—and what it does not

An embedded wallet places account creation, key access and transaction signing inside an application instead of asking users to install a separate wallet. The application may hold keys in different ways, use user-controlled keys, or integrate a signing service; XRPL protocol documentation does not prescribe one custody or key-management design.

Whatever the implementation, the signed transaction still follows XRPL rules. It contains a Fee field, the account has a reserve requirement, and ledger objects such as trust lines or offers can increase that requirement. The application can improve onboarding and pay costs through sponsorship, but it cannot redefine how the ledger charges a validated transaction.

How XRP Ledger transaction fees work

Fees are signed, paid in drops and destroyed

Every XRPL transaction includes a signed Fee amount denominated in drops. One XRP equals 1,000,000 drops. The documented minimum for a standard transaction is currently 10 drops (0.00001 XRP), although the required cost can rise when the network is under load. The amount selected in the signed transaction is destroyed when the transaction is included in a validated ledger; it is not paid to a validator or credited to another account. See the XRPL transaction-cost documentation.

Because Fee is covered by the transaction signature, an application cannot silently edit it after signing. If an embedded-wallet service obtains a fee quote, waits, and then submits the already-signed transaction, network load may have changed in the meantime. A fee that was acceptable when quoted can become too low, causing submission or validation problems. The safe pattern is to obtain a current fee recommendation, set the signed field, sign, and submit promptly; if the fee must change, the transaction must be signed again.

A failed transaction can still consume the fee

A validated transaction with a tec result has failed to achieve its intended ledger operation, but it can still consume its fee. Wallet interfaces should therefore distinguish “the requested action succeeded” from “the transaction was validated and charged.” Show the final result and the fee actually deducted rather than treating every non-successful business operation as fee-free.

Why fee settings change

XRPL validators can adjust reference transaction costs and reserve requirements through fee voting. Validator operators periodically express preferences, and the network adjusts settings using the median of trusted validators’ preferences. The 10-drop reference value is therefore a current documented setting, not a permanent guarantee. Use the connected network’s live values when preparing a transaction or displaying a cost estimate; consult the Fee Voting documentation for the governance mechanism.

How account reserves work

Base reserve and owner reserve

A funded account needs a base reserve. Each qualifying ledger object owned by the account can add an owner reserve. The XRPL documentation lists these Mainnet values as of October 13, 2026:

Requirement Mainnet value documented What it covers
Base reserve 1 XRP The account’s minimum base balance
Owner reserve 0.2 XRP per qualifying object Additional minimum balance for objects the account owns

These figures are not universal. Fee voting can change them, and other XRPL networks may use different settings. The authoritative reserve values are the ones returned by the network your application is connected to. The Reserves documentation explains the current values, object counting and account behavior.

The ordinary unsponsored calculation

For an ordinary account with no sponsored obligations, estimate the minimum required balance as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

base reserve + (owner reserve × OwnerCount)

OwnerCount is the number of reserve-bearing ledger objects attributed to the account. For example, using the documented Mainnet values, an account with an OwnerCount of 3 has an estimated requirement of 1 XRP + (0.2 XRP × 3) = 1.6 XRP. This is a calculation example, not a promise that those values will remain unchanged.

Applications should retrieve the inputs rather than hard-code them:

  • server_info exposes decimal XRP values in validated_ledger.reserve_base_xrp and validated_ledger.reserve_inc_xrp.
  • server_state exposes drops in validated_ledger.reserve_base and validated_ledger.reserve_inc.
  • account_info supplies the account’s OwnerCount.
  • The subscribe stream reports validated-ledger base and incremental reserve values in drops.

These methods and fields are documented in the reserve reference and the subscribe API reference.

Objects that can increase the requirement

Trust lines and other ledger objects consume owner reserve. The reserve documentation lists offers, escrows, checks, NFTs and related offers or pages, signer lists, tickets, payment channels, deposit preauthorizations and oracles among the objects that can count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A trust line is represented by a RippleState entry. Depending on which side modified the line from its default state, that entry can count toward one or both connected accounts’ owner reserve. The exact attribution is described in the RippleState reference. The first two trust lines can have a special exception under the documented conditions, so an application should use the ledger’s object data instead of assuming every line costs the same amount.

Reserve XRP is not locked in a separate account

Reserve XRP remains part of the account’s balance; it is constrained by the minimum-balance rule. A transaction fee can reduce the balance below the current reserve requirement. An account below reserve remains on the ledger, but it cannot send XRP to another account or create new objects that would increase its reserve requirement. It can still submit transactions that do neither, provided it has enough XRP to pay the transaction cost.

This is why a wallet should report reserve headroom, not just the headline XRP balance. A user who sees 1.2 XRP may have little or no spendable amount if the account’s base and owner reserves already require most of that balance.

What sponsorship does for an embedded-wallet user

Sponsorship is cost responsibility, not an XRP deposit

XRPL sponsorship lets one account (the sponsor) pay fees or cover reserve obligations for another account (the sponsee). The sponsee keeps control of its account and keys, while the ledger records which account bears the sponsored reserve responsibility. The official documentation states: “Sponsorship does not transfer XRP to the sponsee’s wallet.” Read the full rules in Sponsored Fees and Reserves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consequently, sponsorship is not an airdrop, an XRP on-ramp or a transfer that increases the user’s spendable balance. It is a protocol feature that can let a new user transact without first supplying all of the XRP that would otherwise be needed for account and object reserves.

Two documented sponsorship patterns

Pattern How it works Application consequence
Co-signing The sponsor and sponsee sign the same covered transaction. The transaction cannot be submitted until the required sponsor signature is collected.
Pre-funding The sponsor allocates funds through a SponsorshipSet transaction for later use. The sponsor does not need to co-sign every covered transaction, but the allocation can be exhausted.

Using sponsorship requires the Sponsor amendment, and the amendment must be active on the relevant network. Activation status and implementation support must be checked for the actual network and application; the protocol documentation does not imply that every embedded-wallet product offers a sponsor program.

Self-funded and sponsored onboarding compared

Question Self-funded account Sponsored arrangement
Who supplies XRP before the user can act? The user supplies enough XRP for the base reserve and any required objects. The sponsor may cover eligible reserve obligations, subject to the arrangement and network support.
Who pays each transaction fee? The user’s account pays and the fee is destroyed. The user or sponsor pays according to the sponsorship transaction and signing design.
Who bears reserve responsibility for created objects? The account that owns the objects bears the requirement. The ledger records the sponsor’s responsibility for eligible sponsored objects.
Is a sponsor signature needed every time? No sponsor exists. Yes for co-signed transactions; not for each covered transaction when a valid pre-funded allocation is used.
What if funds are insufficient? The transaction can fail because the account cannot meet reserve or fee requirements. The transaction can fail when the sponsor allocation, sponsor balance or user balance required by the arrangement is insufficient.

Allocation limits, eligibility rules and user-interface behavior are implementation-specific. Confirm them for the actual sponsorship design instead of promising users unlimited sponsored activity.

  • Total XRP balance: the account’s current XRP balance.
  • Required reserve: the base reserve plus applicable owner-reserve obligations, after accounting for sponsorship.
  • Spendable or headroom balance: the amount available after reserve obligations and the expected transaction fee.

Label the network and the timestamp or ledger context used for the estimate. Because fee and reserve settings can change, avoid presenting a permanently fixed “minimum wallet balance.” If the account owns objects, list them or provide a drill-down so a user can see why the reserve requirement increased.

A practical onboarding sequence

  1. Identify the network. Confirm whether the account is on Mainnet or another XRPL network before displaying reserve and fee values.
  2. Read live settings. Query reserve fields through server_info, server_state or subscribe, and read OwnerCount with account_info.
  3. Classify responsibility. Determine which reserve-bearing objects are self-funded and which, if any, are covered by a sponsor.
  4. Estimate the operation. Add the current transaction fee requirement to the reserve-aware headroom calculation. Treat the quote as time-sensitive under changing load.
  5. Collect signatures. For co-signing, obtain the sponsor signature before submission. For pre-funding, verify that the allocation remains available.
  6. Submit and verify. Wait for a validated result, then refresh account balance, reserve data and object counts. A provisional submission response is not proof that the fee was charged or the intended operation succeeded.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
“Insufficient fee” or a transaction rejected during a busy period The signed fee was below the current load-based requirement. Fetch a current fee recommendation, sign again with the new Fee, and submit promptly.
A transaction returns a validated tec result and the balance is lower The operation failed, but its fee was still consumed. Display the validated result and charged fee separately from the business-operation status; correct the transaction and sign a new one.
The wallet shows XRP, but sending is blocked Balance is at or below the reserve requirement, leaving insufficient headroom. Reduce or remove reserve-bearing objects where appropriate, add XRP, or use an eligible sponsorship arrangement. Do not promise that all reserve can be spent.
Creating a trust line or offer fails unexpectedly The new object would increase the owner reserve beyond available headroom. Recalculate with the latest OwnerCount and reserve increment; account for trust-line attribution and any documented exception.
A sponsored transaction will not submit The Sponsor amendment is inactive, the required signature is missing, or the sponsor allocation or balance is insufficient. Check amendment activation, collect the correct signatures, and verify the sponsor’s remaining allocation and balance.
The displayed minimum differs from another wallet or explorer Different networks, ledger settings or timestamps are being used. Show the connected network and query its live reserve fields instead of using a hard-coded value.

Implementation rules to keep

  • Keep transaction-fee logic separate from reserve logic: one is destroyed per validated transaction, while the other is a balance constraint tied to account and object ownership.
  • Use drops internally for signed fees and API values where the method returns drops; convert to XRP only for display, making the 1 XRP = 1,000,000 drops relationship explicit.
  • Recalculate after every validated transaction because fees, object counts and reserve settings can change the available headroom.
  • Never describe sponsorship as giving XRP to the user. Explain exactly whether the sponsor pays a fee, covers an object reserve, co-signs, or pre-funds an allocation.
  • Keep custody and key-management explanations specific to your application; XRPL’s sponsorship and reserve rules do not define them.
