Xbox Rewards points are Microsoft Rewards points earned from eligible Xbox play, quests, Store purchases and other Microsoft activities. They are not cash, and there is no permanent points-to-dollar exchange rate. Your signed-in Rewards catalog determines which gift cards, Store credits, sweepstakes entries, donations and other offers you can actually claim.
As a current example, Microsoft says about 5,000 points usually redeem for something worth $5, while Xbox lists up to a $5 Xbox Gift Card for 5,000 points. Those figures are approximate examples, not a promise for every country or account.

What Xbox Rewards points are
Rewards with Xbox is part of Microsoft Rewards. Eligible activity adds points to the Microsoft Rewards balance associated with your Microsoft account; points are not a separate currency stored only on a console. You check available quests, balances and redemptions in the Xbox Rewards hub or the Microsoft Rewards page while signed in.

Xbox describes daily, weekly, monthly and limited-time quests. Depending on the market and account, eligible play can take place on an Xbox console, PC, handheld or another supported device. Microsoft also lists Bing searches, quizzes or trivia, selected Xbox activities and qualifying Microsoft Store purchases as possible earning routes. Availability, limits and point amounts vary by country, Rewards level and offer.

Playing a game or buying an item does not automatically guarantee points. The activity must be listed as eligible, and some quests require a specified amount of playtime or another condition before they can be claimed.
How you earn points
Xbox quests
Open the Rewards hub and review the current daily, weekly, monthly and limited-time cards. A quest may ask you to play for a set period, launch a particular title, complete an in-game action or perform another listed task. Read the card before starting: the requirement, completion window and reward can change.
Many quests require you to claim the completed card after the activity is detected. If you finish the requirement but do not claim it, the points may remain pending rather than appearing in your balance immediately.
Eligible gameplay
Xbox says gameplay Rewards can work across consoles, PC, handhelds and other supported devices. Playtime is required for play-based quests, but not every game is eligible for every offer. A game can be available through your library yet still not count toward a particular quest.
Store purchases
Qualifying purchases of games and add-ons from the Microsoft Store can earn points. Xbox also describes additional earning opportunities on selected games and add-ons in the Game Pass library for certain membership tiers. The purchase must meet the offer’s eligibility rules; subscriptions and excluded products do not earn under every offer.

Microsoft activities outside Xbox
Microsoft Rewards may show Bing searches, daily activities, quizzes, trivia and other tasks. These are separate earning cards within the same Rewards ecosystem. Search and activity limits are market-specific, so do not assume that a method or daily allowance shown in one country applies to another.
What you can redeem
The catalog is account- and market-dependent. Xbox currently gives the following examples, but Microsoft notes that offers can change and some gift cards may be temporarily unavailable:

Other rewards can appear in the catalog, including additional gift cards, sweepstakes and charitable options. Microsoft says the Rewards page is the authoritative list for your account. If a reward is not displayed after you sign in in your home region, you cannot assume it is available to you.
Using an Xbox Gift Card
Xbox’s terms say an Xbox Gift Card obtained through Rewards is for eligible Microsoft Store purchases and should be used within 90 days of redemption. That is a condition attached to the promotional gift-card balance, not a universal rule that every Microsoft account balance expires after 90 days. Read the offer terms shown at checkout.
Microsoft’s general guidance says account balance can, in most countries or regions, pay for Microsoft Store downloads and, where offered, Xbox, Surface and accessories. Hardware availability is not universal, so check your local Store before treating a balance as usable for a particular product.

How much are the points worth?
Microsoft Support explicitly says: “Microsoft Rewards points don’t have any cash value. It usually takes about 5,000 points to redeem something worth $5.” The wording matters: 5,000 points is an approximate example for a reward of about $5, not a fixed exchange rate or cash-out right.

The amount you see can differ because Xbox says value depends on local market currency, your Rewards level and the number of points redeemed. A 5,000-point offer in one region is not evidence that every region uses the same denomination.
Points cannot be exchanged for cash, transferred to another person or treated as a bank balance. Their practical value is the value of the specific reward displayed in your account at the time you redeem it.
Do Xbox Rewards points expire?
Microsoft Support says points expire after 12 months without earning activity. Earning activity resets the inactivity period, so an account that continues to earn does not reach that no-activity threshold in the same way as an abandoned balance.
A redeemed Microsoft or Xbox Gift Card can have separate promotional-balance terms. The 90-day use condition described by Xbox applies to the qualifying Xbox Gift Card offer; it is separate from the 12-month inactivity rule for unredeemed Rewards points. Check both the Rewards offer and the gift-card terms rather than assuming one deadline covers everything.

Age, region and account requirements
Age and availability
Xbox states that gameplay Rewards are for players aged 18 or older and are offered only in selected markets. A child account or an account in an unsupported country may not see the same quests or redemption choices.
Redeem in the account’s home region
Microsoft instructs members to redeem in the region where the account was signed up. Offers, currencies and stock differ by country. Do not use a VPN or proxy to disguise your location; doing so can cause a redemption to fail or trigger account checks.
Phone verification
Redemption authentication requires a mobile or landline number. Microsoft says VoIP numbers are not accepted for this purpose. Verification-code errors, a phone number that has reached its usage limit, being outside the account region and an unavailable reward are all listed causes of failed redemption.
How to check quests and redeem a reward
- Sign in. Use the Microsoft account connected to your Xbox profile and open the Xbox Rewards hub or Microsoft Rewards page.
- Review eligibility. Confirm your age, market and any membership requirement shown on each quest. Read the time window and completion condition.
- Complete the activity. Play the specified game or time period, make an eligible Store purchase or finish the listed Microsoft activity. General play does not substitute for a quest’s stated requirement.
- Claim the quest. Return to the Rewards hub and select the completed card. Allow time for detection if the activity has not appeared yet.
- Open the redeem section. Compare the points cost, currency, expiration terms and any minimum-purchase or single-item restriction.
- Verify your account. Use an eligible mobile or landline number and enter the verification code exactly as requested. Do not use a VPN, proxy or VoIP number.
- Save the confirmation. Check Rewards order history for the order number and status. Keep the confirmation until the gift card, donation or other reward is delivered.
How Game Pass tiers affect earning
Xbox describes three paid tiers—Essential, Premium and Ultimate—with different gameplay limits, multipliers and Store-earning rules. The exact caps and points-per-dollar figures are program terms, not guaranteed returns, and can change by market or over time. Xbox’s current information also references tier-change FAQ language from October 2025.

A subscription only changes the earning opportunity; it does not create a guaranteed profit. The extra quests or multiplier matter only if you would use the membership, complete the qualifying play and make eligible purchases. Compare the subscription cost with your normal gaming habits, not with the headline maximum.

Why a redemption can fail
The reward is unavailable
Microsoft says a gift card or other reward can be out of stock or removed. Support cannot predict when a gift card will return. Check the catalog later and consider another currently listed denomination rather than repeatedly submitting the same failed order.
Your verification code is rejected
Request a new code, enter the newest code only and confirm that the phone number is a supported mobile or landline line. VoIP numbers and numbers that have reached a usage limit can prevent verification.
You are outside the account region
Return to the region where the account was created and disable any VPN or proxy. Travel can make a legitimate account look inconsistent with its redemption region, so wait until you can complete the transaction under the correct regional conditions.
The points or order look wrong
Open Rewards order history and inspect the order status. Compare the points balance before and after the transaction, and retain the confirmation details when contacting Microsoft Support. Do not create duplicate orders while the first one is still pending.
How to get the most practical value
- Check the Rewards hub before playing so your session satisfies an active quest instead of relying on untracked play.
- Claim completed cards promptly, especially limited-time offers.
- Compare the displayed point cost with the reward’s actual use in your region; a gift card, donation and sweepstakes entry have different certainty and utility.
- Plan around the 12-month inactivity rule and avoid leaving a redeemed promotional balance unused past its stated deadline.
- Use only eligible purchases you already intended to make. Buying something solely to earn points can cost more than the reward.
- Review tier requirements and current caps in your account before paying for a Game Pass upgrade.
What to verify on your own account
Because Microsoft changes limits, markets, stock and tier terms, the signed-in Rewards page outranks any general example. Before redeeming, confirm the points price, currency, expiration date, minimum purchase, excluded subscriptions, delivery method and whether the reward is available in your country. The catalog shown to your account is the only reliable answer for what you can claim today.
