Yes—if a game supports Xbox Play Anywhere, you can move from an Xbox console to the Xbox/Microsoft Store version on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, or to a supported Windows 11 gaming handheld, and continue with the same progress. Save data, eligible add-ons, and your achievement record are tied to your Xbox account. Finish a session, let the game upload its latest progress, close it, then launch the same title on the other device while signed in to that account.
Play Anywhere uses one shared entitlement and one shared achievement list. It is a digital Xbox program, not a guarantee that every PC edition or every physical copy will synchronize.

What Xbox Play Anywhere synchronizes
For a participating title, Xbox stores your progress with the Xbox service rather than treating the console and PC releases as unrelated games. The official Play Anywhere description says you can pick up where you left off on a PC, Xbox console, or supported handheld, bringing saves, game add-ons, and achievements with you.

The save and the ownership entitlement are related but distinct. A save tells the game where you are; the entitlement tells the other device which digital game, add-ons, and unlocks your account owns.

How to move a save from Xbox to PC
The handoff is straightforward when the title, account, and PC edition all qualify. Use this sequence whenever you change devices.
1. Confirm the game is a Play Anywhere title
Open the game’s Xbox or Microsoft Store listing and look for the Xbox Play Anywhere label. A normal PC release, even if it has an Xbox-branded name, is not automatically included. The program applies to participating digital games only.
2. Install the supported PC edition
On Windows, use the Xbox app or Microsoft Store version associated with the same Xbox account that owns the console game. Do not assume that a copy obtained from Steam, Epic, or another storefront shares the Play Anywhere entitlement or save. The program’s supported PC path is the Xbox/Microsoft ecosystem described by Xbox.

3. Finish the console session normally
Save your progress in the game, then leave the title running long enough for the latest changes to be uploaded. Close the game normally before switching devices. If you turn to the PC before the newest session has reached the Xbox service, the PC can open an older cloud state.
4. Sign in to the same Xbox account on the PC
Start the Xbox app and the game with the account used on the console. Account identity matters more than the Windows user name: the Play Anywhere save and entitlement are associated with the Xbox account.

5. Launch the game and choose the synchronized progress
Open the same Play Anywhere title. The game should retrieve the account-backed progress and continue from the latest uploaded session. Give the first launch time to complete its synchronization before making new progress.
6. Return to the console using the same handoff
When you go back to Xbox, finish the PC session, close the game so its newest progress can upload, and then launch the console version under the same account. Each switch is a new handoff; it is not a shared, simultaneous session.
How achievements and Gamerscore carry over
A Play Anywhere game has one achievement list and one Gamerscore record for the Xbox account across its supported versions. If you unlock an achievement on the console, that achievement is recorded on the account; opening the PC version does not present a second copy to earn. The same rule applies in reverse when an achievement is unlocked on PC.
Xbox’s official FAQ describes this as “a single shared set of Gamerscore and Achievements” for Xbox Play Anywhere games. Xbox Wire’s 2016 launch explanation likewise states that progress, DLC, Gamerscore, and achievements are saved on Xbox Live so players can continue on another Xbox One or Windows 10 PC. The current device descriptions also include Windows 11 PCs and supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds.
Because the record is account-based, signing into a different Xbox account will not reproduce your earned achievements or Gamerscore. It can also make a correctly installed game appear to have no personal progress, so account verification should be the first check when the achievement list looks wrong.

What happens to DLC, Season Passes, and in-game unlocks
Play Anywhere covers more than the base save when the content is part of the eligible digital entitlement. Xbox lists DLC, add-ons, Season Passes, consumables, and in-game unlocks among the items that can follow you between supported devices.

- Add-ons: Eligible expansions and other downloadable additions are associated with the Play Anywhere ownership rather than requiring a separate purchase for each supported device.
- Season Passes: A qualifying Season Pass can carry to the other supported version under the same account.
- Consumables: Eligible account-backed consumables can be available on the second device.
- In-game unlocks: Unlocks covered by the title’s Play Anywhere implementation can follow the synchronized entitlement and progress.
These rules do not turn every purchase into a universal license. The title must participate in Play Anywhere, the copy must be the supported Xbox/Microsoft Store edition, and the content must be included in that game’s eligible entitlement. A game developer can still impose title-specific implementation details that affect how content is presented.
Eligibility rules and important limits
The game must explicitly support Play Anywhere
Look for the Play Anywhere label on the Xbox or Microsoft Store listing. Ordinary Xbox games and ordinary PC games are not automatically cross-save games.
Digital games only
The current Xbox FAQ says Play Anywhere does not apply to disc games. A physical disc purchase therefore does not create the digital Play Anywhere entitlement needed for the console-to-PC handoff.
The PC storefront matters
The supported PC route is the Xbox app or Microsoft Store version tied to the owning Xbox account. A Steam, Epic, or other storefront release should not be assumed to share the Xbox Play Anywhere save, add-ons, or ownership record.

Use one active game session at a time
Xbox describes the feature as a handoff: you can be signed into the same game on one Xbox console, one Windows 10/11 PC, or one supported handheld at a time. It is not designed for two people to play the same account’s session concurrently on separate devices.
Supported Windows versions and handhelds
The PC side covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 through the Xbox/Microsoft ecosystem. Supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds are also included where Xbox identifies them as supported. Compatibility is title-specific, so check the game listing rather than inferring support from the hardware alone.

The newest session is missing
- Return to the device where the newest progress was made.
- Open the game and verify that the session contains the expected progress.
- Save or finish the current activity, then close the game normally so the latest state can upload.
- On the second device, confirm that the same Xbox account is signed in before launching the title again.
If the second device still opens an older state, avoid making additional progress there until the original session has had another opportunity to upload. Otherwise, you can create competing versions of your progress and make it harder to identify which state is current.
The PC version starts without your save
- Check the game listing for the Xbox Play Anywhere label.
- Confirm that the installation came from the Xbox app or Microsoft Store, not an unrelated storefront.
- Verify the Xbox account in the PC Xbox app matches the account used on the console.
- Close and relaunch the game after the account and edition checks; the first launch may need to retrieve the account-backed data.
DLC or unlocks are absent
First verify the account and the PC edition, then check whether the missing item is an eligible Play Anywhere add-on or entitlement. The program carries qualifying DLC, Season Passes, consumables, and in-game unlocks, but a separately sold or differently licensed item may not be included in the title’s supported entitlement.
Achievements appear incomplete
Check the account before assuming the achievement was lost. Play Anywhere uses one shared list, so achievements unlocked on the other device should be associated with that same Xbox account rather than appearing under a second PC-specific list. A different account can make the list look empty or incomplete.
The game refuses a second launch
Quit the active session on the first device. Play Anywhere permits a handoff, not simultaneous use of the same game account on multiple supported devices.
How to evaluate two games before buying
If cross-device play is the deciding factor, compare the games on the same four points instead of relying on a general “cross-platform” claim.

Console to desktop PC
You play a Play Anywhere game on Xbox in the evening, complete a mission, and close the game. After the upload finishes, you launch the Xbox/Microsoft Store PC version the next morning with the same account. The PC retrieves that progress, and any qualifying add-ons and previously earned achievements remain associated with the account.

PC to supported handheld
You stop playing on a Windows 11 PC, close the title to allow synchronization, and then start it on a supported Windows 11 gaming handheld. The handheld follows the same account and entitlement rules as the console-to-PC move.
Disc purchase to PC
You own a disc copy of a game and install a PC edition from another storefront. That combination does not qualify merely because the game exists on Xbox. Play Anywhere is digital and title-specific, and the PC copy must use the supported Xbox/Microsoft Store path.
Two people on two devices
You cannot use one account’s Play Anywhere session as a simultaneous shared copy on a console and PC. Finish and close the first session before handing the account to the next device.
What Play Anywhere does not promise
- It does not make every Xbox title cross-save compatible.
- It does not convert a disc game into a digital Play Anywhere license.
- It does not make Steam, Epic, or other storefront copies share the Xbox entitlement automatically.
- It does not create duplicate achievements or a second Gamerscore track for the PC version.
- It does not permit simultaneous play of the same account’s game session on multiple supported devices.
The reliable test is specific: verify the Play Anywhere label, use the Xbox/Microsoft Store PC edition, sign in with the same Xbox account, and let each session finish uploading before switching devices.
