You can play included titles while your subscription is active and while each title remains in the catalog. The right tier depends on your device, need for console multiplayer, interest in day-one releases, cloud-play habits, and whether bundled services are useful to you.
What Xbox Game Pass includes
Game Pass provides access to a changing library of games and plan-specific benefits for one recurring charge. A subscription does not convert catalog games into permanent purchases: Xbox says access ends when you cancel or the subscription expires, or when a game leaves the Game Pass library. A title can therefore be playable today but unavailable later, even if you installed it previously.

Availability is not identical everywhere. Xbox states that features, catalog contents, cloud limits and supported devices can vary by region, plan, platform and time. The figures below are current claims on Xbox’s US pages accessed October 13, 2026, rather than permanent guarantees.

Which plan fits your situation?
For a Windows PC only
Start with PC Game Pass if you want a rotating PC download library, day-one releases and EA Play. It does not include cloud gaming, console games or console multiplayer. Compare its recurring charge with the price of the individual PC games you actually expect to play; a subscription is most useful when you regularly sample several included titles rather than buying only one game a year.
For a console with online multiplayer
Essential, Premium and Ultimate include online console multiplayer. Essential is the straightforward choice when a smaller library is enough. Remember that Xbox allows multiplayer for free-to-play games to every Xbox player, so do not upgrade solely to play a free-to-play title online without checking that game’s requirements.

For the largest library
Ultimate has the largest stated catalog at 500+ games, compared with 200+ for Premium and 50+ for Essential. The number does not mean every game works on every device: platform and regional availability still apply. Use the catalog’s plan and platform filters for the games you care about.
For day-one releases
Ultimate and PC Game Pass include selected day-one games. Xbox specifically excludes Call of Duty titles from the relevant Ultimate day-one statement, so do not treat “day one” as a promise covering every Xbox-published release. Premium instead lists selected Xbox-published games arriving within one year, while Essential does not include new releases on day one.
For cloud streaming
The US overview currently lists 5 cloud-gaming hours per month with Essential, 10 with Premium and 15 with Ultimate. Cloud gaming requires a supported device and an eligible region, and the playable selection can be narrower than the full catalog. PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming. If you stream only occasionally, a lower tier may be sufficient; frequent streaming makes Ultimate’s higher allowance more relevant, provided the games you want are streamable.

- 512GB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 512GB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.
For bundled services
Ultimate includes EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. PC Game Pass includes EA Play. Count only services you would otherwise use: paying for an included benefit you never open does not improve the practical value of the tier.

- Choose the tier and verify the account region. Open the live comparison page, select a plan and review the account-specific checkout. Confirm the device, catalog and cloud terms shown for your market.
- Find a game in the catalog. Use Xbox’s plan and platform filters and check the game’s individual listing. A title marked as leaving soon should not be treated as a long-term library commitment.
- Download where supported. The comparison page lists Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, Windows PC and supported handhelds for download and play. Install the game through the Xbox interface for the platform you are using.
- Stream where supported. Xbox lists cloud access on Apple and Android phones and tablets, Samsung and LG smart TVs, Amazon Fire TVs, Meta VR headsets and a web browser at xbox.com/play. Sign in with the subscribing Microsoft account and select a cloud-capable title. Device, region, plan and game eligibility all matter.
- Keep the subscription active. You retain catalog access only while the subscription is active and the title remains included. If either condition ends, the game requires a separate purchase or another eligible subscription.
Supported devices are sold separately. Xbox’s general device list does not establish compatibility for every phone model, television model, headset, controller or handheld. Verify the exact hardware and region on Xbox’s live support information before buying equipment specifically for streaming.
Catalog changes, platforms and practical checks
Game Pass is best understood as a managed catalog rather than a fixed shelf. A game may be available on console but not PC, or downloadable on one platform while streamable on another. Plan labels and platform filters are therefore more reliable than assuming that an included game works everywhere.

- Check the game’s platform badges before installing.
- Check the “leaving soon” collection if you are beginning a long campaign.
- Confirm that the game is included with your specific tier, not merely visible in the broader Xbox store.
- For cloud play, confirm that the title is marked playable in the cloud and that your device and region are supported.
Prices, renewals and promotions
A stable universal price should not be assumed. Xbox’s US overview available for this article displayed account-dependent or placeholder pricing rather than a dependable plan price table, and localized pages can differ. Review the amount, taxes and renewal date shown at checkout for your Microsoft account and market; do not rely on a price quoted for another country or an older page.
Subscriptions renew automatically by default. Promotional offers are temporary, may be limited by eligibility or region, can require a payment card and may be subject to tax. When a promotion ends, the subscription normally changes to the then-current regular price unless you turn off renewal.

- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
- Open the account’s Services & subscriptions area, or open subscription settings on the Xbox console.
- Select the Game Pass subscription and choose Manage.
- Choose Turn off recurring billing and follow the confirmation prompts. Labels can vary by account and region.
- Check the displayed end date. Cancel before the next billing date to avoid the next charge.
Turning off recurring billing normally preserves access through the paid period; the account page is the authority for the exact end date and terms.

Refund limits
Xbox’s US overview says a subscriber may request a refund for the most recent recurring charge when cancellation occurs within 30 days after payment, limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product. This is a narrow eligibility rule, not a universal refund guarantee. Submit any request through current Xbox support and read the decision shown for your account.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming included means owned: Uninstalling and reinstalling later will not restore access if the subscription ended or the game left the catalog.
- Buying a tier for free-to-play multiplayer alone: Xbox says free-to-play multiplayer is open to every Xbox player; verify the particular game before upgrading.
- Expecting PC Game Pass to stream: Cloud gaming is not included with that plan. Choose a tier with cloud access if streaming is essential.
- Treating day-one as universal: Day-one access applies to selected games, and Xbox’s stated Ultimate claim excludes Call of Duty titles.
- Assuming every listed device works: Device support is conditional on model, region, plan and game. Check current compatibility before purchasing a television, phone, headset or controller.
- Ignoring renewal pricing: Record the promotion’s end date and the regular renewal amount shown at checkout, then set a reminder if you intend to cancel.
A quick decision checklist
- If you play only on Windows PC and want downloads plus day-one games, compare PC Game Pass with buying your usual titles separately.
- If you play on Xbox console, need online multiplayer and want a modest library, evaluate Essential.
- If you want more games and some cloud use and can wait up to a year for selected Xbox-published releases, evaluate Premium.
- If day-one access, multiple supported devices, cloud hours or EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics matter, evaluate Ultimate.
- Before subscribing, verify the exact game, platform, region, renewal price and cancellation date in your account.
The most dependable choice is the lowest tier that covers your actual device and must-have feature. Move up only when the additional catalog, release timing, cloud allowance or bundled service solves a need you have identified.
