An Xbox game code is a digital token that grants a game license to the Microsoft account that redeems it. Sign in to the account you actually want to use before selecting Redeem code. Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games include a user license associated with that account, so choosing the wrong account can create a problem that changing consoles will not fix.
Game-download codes, Microsoft or Xbox gift cards, and promotional account credit are different products. How Xbox game codes work
A game code is a redeemable token. When Microsoft accepts it, the entitlement is attached to the Microsoft account currently signed in. You can then install the game on an eligible Xbox console or through the Microsoft Store under that account, subject to the game’s platform and market requirements.
For Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games, Microsoft describes two kinds of license: a device-based license and a user-based license. The user-based license is associated with the Microsoft account. In practical terms, the account matters more than the console on which you first redeem the token. Sign in to the account that should own the game, not merely the account that happens to be open on a shared console.

There is no established general right to transfer a redeemed game license to another Microsoft account. Family sharing, console settings, or signing in on a second Xbox may allow access in particular circumstances, but they do not move ownership to a different account.
Game code versus gift card
A game-specific code represents a particular digital product or offer. A Microsoft or Xbox gift card adds stored value to an account, after which that balance can be used for eligible purchases. Redeeming a gift card does not automatically grant a specific game, and the expiration and spending rules for account balance should not be applied automatically to a game-download code.

How do I redeem an Xbox game code?
Microsoft’s support instruction is straightforward: sign in to the intended Microsoft account, select Redeem code, and enter or paste the code or token value. Use this sequence to avoid attaching the entitlement to the wrong account.

- Confirm the destination account. Check the Gamertag and Microsoft account email shown in the Xbox profile or Microsoft Store. If the console has several profiles, switch to the one that should receive the game.
- Open the redemption flow. On the console or in the Microsoft Store/Xbox app, choose Redeem code. If the app is unreliable, use Microsoft’s web redemption page at
Microsoft.com/redeem. - Enter the token exactly. Type the code or paste it into the field. Check characters that are easy to confuse, and do not add spaces or punctuation that are not part of the token.
- Review the confirmation details. Before accepting, verify the displayed product and account. Stop if the title, edition, market, or account is not what you expected.
- Complete redemption and install. After Microsoft accepts the code, look in the account’s library or the Store for the game and start the download on an eligible Xbox console.
Redeeming on the web can be useful when a console app reports an error, but it does not bypass an invalid, already-used, region-incompatible, or restricted code. It simply gives you another supported redemption route.
Which account receives the game?
The account signed in at the moment of redemption receives the user-based license. A code redeemed on one Gamertag will not ordinarily appear as owned by another Gamertag on the same console. This is why checking the profile before entering a purchased code is the most important preventive step.
If you redeemed on the wrong account, do not assume that removing the account from the console, changing the home-console setting, or reinstalling the game will transfer the license. The official material reviewed does not establish a general transfer mechanism. Contact Microsoft Support promptly and explain what happened; any remedy is account-specific and is not guaranteed.

Do Xbox game codes expire?
There is no single Microsoft-published expiration period that applies to every Xbox game-specific download code. The date, if one exists, can be stated on the code, offer, publisher terms, or retailer listing. Check those terms for the particular token instead of applying a gift-card rule to it.

A code can therefore be unusable for reasons other than age: it may have been redeemed already, issued for another market, limited to a particular edition, or blocked by an account restriction. An apparently old code is not proof that expiration caused the failure, and a recent code is not proof that it will work in every region.
Can I redeem a code from another country?
Do not assume that a code purchased abroad will redeem on your account. Microsoft’s gift-card terms say currency denominations may be added only to an account registered in a jurisdiction that recognizes that currency. The resulting balance can be used only at participating stores available in the account’s registered jurisdiction.

For a game code, the relevant market and the code’s own terms matter. Compare the market or currency shown by the seller with the country or region registered on your Microsoft account before purchase. A code intended for one market may be rejected in another, or it may redeem but leave the product unusable in the destination region; the particular product terms control.
Microsoft recommends changing an account region only when moving to another country or region for the long term. It warns that items obtained in one region might not work in another, and account balance does not move when the account region changes. Changing the setting merely to force a code through can therefore create additional access and balance problems.
Gift-card balances are also non-transferable between people or accounts. You cannot normally redeem currency to one account and move that balance to a friend’s account later.

Account limits and restrictions that can affect redemption
Microsoft publishes limits for account money. These are limits on adding, redeeming, spending, and holding balance; they are not a universal explanation for every failed game-download code.

Microsoft’s country examples include AUD 1,520 for Australia, EUR 150 for France, HKD 8,000 for Hong Kong, INR 50,000 for India, NZD 5,000 for New Zealand, SGD 1,000 for Singapore, CHF 3,000 for Switzerland, and TWD 10,000 for Taiwan. France also has additional 30-day redemption and spending limits. These figures are published account-balance rules, expressed in local currency where listed, and Microsoft can change them or apply further exceptions.
Microsoft’s gift-card terms also allow restrictions intended to prevent fraud or unauthorized use. The service may limit access to balance or require a different payment method. Violating the Microsoft Services Agreement can result in suspension or termination of account access, balance, or rights to purchase or redeem gift cards or products. Those are policy possibilities, not a diagnosis of any particular error.

Why won’t my Xbox code redeem?
Work through the checks in this order. Each step isolates a different common cause without assuming that the code itself is defective.
- Check the signed-in account. Confirm the Microsoft account and Gamertag shown in the redemption screen. If it is not the intended owner, cancel and switch accounts before trying again.
- Read the exact error. Note whether Microsoft reports an invalid or used token, a region or currency problem, an account limit, or a required update. The wording determines which branch to follow.
- Update the console or app. If the message requests an update, install the current Xbox console software or Microsoft Store/Xbox app update, restart, and retry.
- Use the web flow. Open
Microsoft.com/redeem, sign in to the same intended account, and enter the token there. A successful web redemption confirms that the console or app was the immediate problem; it does not change the account or market attached to the code. - Check market and account region. Compare the seller’s stated country, currency, and edition with the account’s registered region. Do not change region casually, because balance does not move between regions and previously obtained items may not work after a move.
- For stored value, check limits and promotion terms. Review whether the account is at a daily or maximum balance limit, whether promotional credit has expired, and whether a country-specific limit applies. These checks are relevant to gift cards and account balance, not automatically to every game code.
- Contact the right party. If you bought the wrong code, Microsoft directs you to contact the retailer. For an otherwise unresolved redemption error, contact Microsoft Support with the code, purchase details, account region, and exact error message. Do not publish the full code in a public forum.
What to verify before buying or redeeming
- The product is a game-download code rather than a gift card or promotional credit.
- The edition and platform match the Xbox console or account on which you intend to play.
- The seller identifies the code’s market and currency.
- The account’s registered country is compatible with that market.
- The redemption account is the one that should own the user license.
- Any stated expiration date, promotion deadline, or publisher condition is recorded before purchase.
- The retailer’s return policy covers an incorrect or incompatible code.
Keep the receipt and the code’s original terms until the game appears in the correct account library. If redemption succeeds but installation does not begin, verify that the console is signed in to the same account and that the title is supported on that device; do not redeem the token again on another account.
The practical bottom line
Redeem an Xbox game code while signed in to the Microsoft account that should own it, and verify the displayed account and product before confirming. Treat game-specific codes separately from stored-value cards: Microsoft says ordinary account balance does not expire, promotional balance follows its promotion, and no universal expiry period is established for every game code. Region, currency, account limits, and policy restrictions can block use. When redemption fails, check the account, update the console or app, try Microsoft’s web redemption flow, then contact the retailer for a wrong purchase or Microsoft Support for other unresolved errors.
