Xbox Cloud Gaming lets you stream supported Xbox games to select smart TVs and Amazon Fire TV devices—no Xbox console required. You need a supported TV or streaming device, a compatible controller, an internet connection, and, for most games, an eligible Game Pass plan. Some supported free-to-play games are exceptions.
How Xbox Cloud Gaming works on a TV
The game runs on Xbox’s cloud service and streams video to your TV; your controller inputs travel back over the internet. That means you do not install and run the game on the television as you would on a console. A console is not required, but streaming depends on your network, location, and device, and the experience is not identical to local play.

Xbox notes that streamed games can have limits involving video resolution, audio outputs, save storage (cloud saves only), companion-app support, and accessories or peripherals. Check the requirements for the particular game if you rely on a feature beyond basic controller play.
Which TVs and streaming devices are supported?
Xbox’s US TV support page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists select models rather than every device from a supported brand. Check the exact model, software version, and local availability before choosing a setup.

The list can change, and availability varies by region. If your TV is not supported, a listed Fire TV device may be an option, but it does not make every television or Fire TV generation compatible. The Xbox TV support page has the current platform details.
What you need to play
- A supported TV or streaming device: Verify the precise model and operating-system version, not just the brand.
- A compatible controller: Connect it by Bluetooth or USB. Xbox’s TV FAQ mentions Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers, and other compatible models; check the exact controller against Xbox’s controller and cloud-gaming information.
- Internet access: Xbox recommends a high-speed connection. Its TV guidance specifies 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs, and tablets and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data; the TV page also recommends wired internet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 20 Mbps down. These are recommendations, not a guarantee of smooth play.
- A plan or an eligible free-to-play game: Most cloud games require an active eligible Game Pass subscription. The plan and game catalog available to you depend on region, platform, and current terms.
- A Microsoft account and regional availability: Check that cloud gaming and the game you want are available where you live.
Does Xbox Cloud Gaming on TV require Game Pass?
For most games, yes. Xbox’s TV FAQ says an active Game Pass subscription and supported games are required for most cloud games in the Xbox app. Xbox’s broader cloud-gaming FAQ names Ultimate, Premium, or Essential for access to hundreds of games, but the catalog and plan eligibility can change.

There are exceptions: selected free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Confirm that a specific title is currently available for cloud play on your device and under your plan using the Xbox Cloud Gaming page. Do not assume a game is included simply because it is available on another platform or through a different Game Pass plan.

- Check device support. Compare your TV’s exact model and operating-system version with the Xbox TV support information. For Samsung, use the Samsung Gaming Hub device list; for VIDAA, check VIDAA support. If the TV is not listed, consider only one of the Fire TV generations named above and confirm your TV has a compatible HDMI port.
- Check region and game access. Confirm Xbox Cloud Gaming is available in your region and that the game is playable through the cloud on your device and plan.
- Choose the required access route. Check the current plan terms for most games, or verify that your chosen free-to-play title is among the supported exceptions.
- Connect a controller. Pair a compatible model over Bluetooth or plug it in by USB, then check Xbox’s controller information if it is not recognized.
- Improve the network connection. Use a wired connection where practical or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and compare your connection with Xbox’s guidance. Actual performance also depends on location and device.
Should you use the TV app or add a Fire TV device?
If your television is already supported, using its Xbox app avoids adding a separate streaming device. If it is not supported, one of the specifically listed Fire TV models may provide another route, provided the television has a compatible HDMI connection. Neither route is universally better: check model eligibility, app availability in your market, controller connection, and network setup before deciding. Xbox’s published information does not establish a quality ranking or current device prices.

What affects streaming quality?
A fast connection helps, but it does not ensure consistent play. Xbox says performance can vary with connection, location, and device. If gameplay stutters or responds slowly, test the network, try wired internet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and compare another supported device if one is available. A problem on one television does not by itself establish that the game or service is unavailable everywhere.
Cloud play also has the documented feature limits noted above, including cloud-only saves and possible limits on resolution, audio outputs, companion apps, and peripherals. For a particular game or accessory, check its current support details rather than assuming console parity.
