Yes—Xbox Series X|S can run Xbox One games plus selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Series X accepts supported digital games and game discs. Series S has no optical drive, so it requires a compatible digital license. Because older-generation support is selective, the decisive step is checking your exact game in Xbox’s official backward-compatibility catalog before buying or installing anything.
Which Xbox generations work on Series X and Series S?
Both current Series consoles support Xbox One games and a selected catalog of Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. “Selected” is important: backward compatibility does not unlock every title released for those older systems. Licensing, technical requirements and publisher participation determine which games are included, and the catalog can change. Treat the official catalog as the authority for an individual game rather than assuming that an entire console generation is covered.

Xbox describes the feature as free for compatible games you already own. That describes the compatibility service itself, not the price of acquiring a game you do not own. A title can be compatible yet unavailable for new digital purchase, or available in a different edition or region. Check the listing and your account library separately.

Can I play Xbox 360 games on Xbox Series X?
You can play a supported Xbox 360 game on Series X in either of two ways:
#1 Best Overall
- FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.

- 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.
- Digital ownership: Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game and download it from your library or the store listing.
- Physical ownership: Insert the supported Xbox 360 disc. The console uses the disc to verify ownership and downloads the compatible game installation; the disc must remain available when you launch a disc-based copy.
The same process applies to supported original Xbox games. An Xbox 360 disc that is absent from the compatibility catalog will not become playable simply because it fits in the drive. Region, edition and licensing differences can also affect whether a particular disc is recognized.
Do Xbox One discs work on Series S?
No. Series S is an all-digital console and cannot read Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs. Microsoft’s product description confirms that the console has no physical-disc support: Xbox Series S console. To play an older game on Series S, you need a compatible digital license attached to your account. Owning only the disc does not provide a usable copy on that console.
Series X is the appropriate model when your older library is primarily physical. A disc-based game still has to appear in the supported catalog, and the disc remains part of the ownership check even after the console downloads the game.

How to install a backward-compatible game
For a digital game
- Open the official catalog and search for the exact title, including the edition or remaster you own.
- On the console, sign in to the Microsoft account that purchased or redeemed the game.
- Open My games & apps, select Full library, then look under the appropriate owned-games section.
- Select the compatible title and choose Install. If it is not listed, search the Microsoft Store while signed in to the owning account.
- Allow the download and any updates to finish before launching. The game may receive a Series-specific update automatically.
Digital entitlements follow the account that owns them. Signing in with a different account, using the wrong region or confusing a backward-compatible version with a separate remake are common reasons a game appears to be missing.
For a disc on Series X
- Confirm the disc version is listed in the compatibility catalog.
- Insert the disc into Series X and wait for the installation prompt.
- Install the downloaded game files and any available updates.
- Keep the original disc in the drive whenever you play; it functions as the license check.
Series X does not convert an unsupported disc into a playable title, and Series S cannot perform this procedure because it has no drive.
What happens technically on each console?
Series X
Xbox says backward-compatible games run using the full power of Series X rather than a separate “boost mode” or a downclocked configuration. That gives compatible titles access to the console’s faster storage and newer system resources, but it does not mean every game is rebuilt for native 4K or a fixed frame rate. The result depends on the title and the enhancements assigned to it.

Series S
Xbox’s technical explanation says Series S uses the Xbox One S version of a backward-compatible game. The platform then applies improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates, faster load times and Auto HDR where supported. This distinction matters: Series S does not automatically receive every Xbox One X enhancement, and no universal resolution or frame-rate target applies to the whole catalog.
Auto HDR and FPS Boost
Some compatible games support Auto HDR, which expands the range of highlights and shadows on an HDR-capable display. Others support FPS Boost, which can raise or stabilize frame rates. These are title-specific features, not promises for every Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox game. When available, the console may show the feature in the game’s compatibility or system information; consult the individual catalog entry for the authoritative assignment.
Faster loading is a broader Series-console benefit because games install to the newer storage architecture, but the amount of improvement varies with the game’s loading design. An enhancement flag should therefore be read as a property of that title, not as a guarantee that every older game behaves identically.

Series X versus Series S for older games
| Question | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Supported software generations | Xbox One plus selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games | Xbox One plus selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games |
| Physical backward-compatible games | Supported when the exact disc title is in the catalog | Not supported; no optical drive |
| Digital backward-compatible games | Supported for compatible licenses on the signed-in account | Supported for compatible digital licenses |
| Backward-compatible baseline | Runs with the full Series X configuration, according to Xbox | Uses the Xbox One S version with platform improvements, according to Xbox |
| Auto HDR and FPS Boost | Available only for titles assigned those features | Available only for titles assigned those features |
For a buyer, the practical decision is simple: choose Series X if discs are part of your library; Series S can make sense when your games are digital and you accept the catalog’s title-by-title limits.
Does backward compatibility improve graphics or frame rate?
It can, but the improvement is not universal. Xbox lists Auto HDR and FPS Boost for selected games, and its Series S explanation specifically names improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates and faster loading. Those capabilities are applied per title. A game without an FPS Boost designation should not be expected to run at a particular frame rate, and a game without an Xbox One X enhancement should not be assumed to render at a higher resolution on Series X.

Auto HDR requires a compatible HDR television or monitor, while frame-rate gains are most noticeable on a display that can refresh at the relevant rate. The console can still run the game without those display features.

How large is the compatibility program?
Xbox’s published milestones describe a broad program, but the figures have dates and should not be treated as a live catalog count.

|---|---|---|
| Thousands of games across four generations | Described for the Series X|S launch in 2020 | A broad launch description, not an exact current total. Xbox Wire, October 13, 2020 |
| More than 70 Xbox 360 and original Xbox games added | Announced in the 20th-anniversary catalog update | A dated addition announced November 15, 2021. Xbox Wire |

Why a game may not work
- The title is not in the catalog: Compatibility is selective, so an entire series or generation cannot be assumed to work.
- You own a disc but are using Series S: The all-digital console cannot authenticate physical media.
- The wrong account is signed in: Digital ownership belongs to the purchasing or redeeming account.
- The edition differs: A remaster, arcade release, regional version or bundle may be a separate product from the listed compatible edition.
- The game is no longer sold: Compatibility does not guarantee that a title remains available for new purchase. Existing digital licenses may still appear in the owner’s library.
- Installation is incomplete: Wait for updates and verify that the console has enough storage before troubleshooting the license.
If a supported digital game is absent, verify the account, region and edition first, then search the catalog and the console library again. For a disc, cleanly reinsert it and confirm that the exact release is listed; no software setting can add an unsupported title.
What to check before choosing a console
- Make a list of the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games you actually intend to play.
- Mark which copies are discs and which are digital licenses.
- Check every older title in the official catalog, including the edition and region where relevant.
- Decide whether title-specific enhancements such as Auto HDR or FPS Boost matter for your display and preferred games.
- Choose Series X when physical ownership is essential; choose Series S only when your usable library is digital.
Xbox’s own summary is that “Xbox Series X|S Backward Compatibility is free and allows you to play selected Xbox 360, Original Xbox games and Xbox One games you already own on Xbox Series X|S.” The word “selected” remains the key qualification: verify the game, the license type and the console drive before you rely on compatibility.
