Use the Warband Bank for the clearest documented way to move gold to your own characters. Blizzard describes Warbands as covering characters on your Battle.net account within one region, across realms and factions, and says Warband Bank gold can be deposited and manually withdrawn by those characters. Eligible currencies can be transferred through the currency interface, but some remain character-bound and some transfers can reduce the amount received.
Ordinary mail, direct player trade, the regular Auction House, and the WoW Token exchange are separate systems. Their realm, faction, account, binding, and limit rules should not be treated as interchangeable. Blizzard’s older patch notes document historical mail restrictions, while the current official documentation cited here does not provide a complete present-day matrix for ordinary mail or direct trade.

Which WoW gold-transfer method should you use?
Your destination and the thing you are moving determine the right route:
Recommended Free Tools
| Route | What moves | Who can receive it | Realm, faction, or region scope | Important restriction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warband Bank | Gold and bank-eligible items | Characters in your Warband | Warband characters across realms and factions within one region | Gold is deposited and manually withdrawn; it is not an automatic shared character wallet |
| Currency interface | Eligible currencies | Characters in your Warband | Warband scope within one region | Some currencies remain non-transferable; an allowed transfer can involve a loss |
| Ordinary mail | Mail attachments and, where currently permitted, gold | Depends on current mail eligibility | Current official eligibility by realm, faction, and account relationship is not established in the cited documentation | A historical Patch 5.4 rule allowed only account-bound items cross-realm to another character on the same account, not gold or other items |
| Direct player trade | Items or gold placed in the trade window | Another player, subject to current trade rules | Current cross-realm and cross-faction eligibility is not established in the cited documentation | Patch 7.1 documented a confirmation dialog, not a complete current eligibility rule |
| Regular Auction House | Items listed for sale through the auction market | Players who can buy the listing under the current Auction House rules | The cited material does not establish a current realm or faction matrix for ordinary auctions | It is separate from the dedicated WoW Token exchange |
| WoW Token exchange | A Token bought with gold, or a shop-purchased Token listed for gold | Regional Token market participants | Region-wide market; pricing varies by supply and demand | A Token bought for gold becomes soulbound; a listed shop-purchased Token’s quoted gold amount is locked |
If you are funding your own alt, start with the Warband Bank. If you are trying to pay another player, do not assume Warband rules apply: Warbands group your own Battle.net characters, not unrelated accounts.

How Warbands define the boundary
Blizzard’s Warbands preview describes the system as covering characters on a player’s Battle.net account and the items, collections, and progression they share. The preview says the Warband is limited to a single region while spanning realms and factions. Read that boundary literally: a character on another realm or faction can be inside the same Warband when it is part of the same Battle.net account and region, but the documentation does not say that gold or currencies become global across different regions.
Blizzard’s wording is broad for account characters but deliberately qualified for currencies. It states that many currencies remain non-transferable because they represent important character-based progression. A Warband therefore is not one universal balance in which every currency automatically follows every character.

Sending gold to your own alt with the Warband Bank
The Warband Bank is the documented route for moving gold between your own Warband characters. Blizzard says players can deposit gold and manually withdraw it across their Warband characters. The operation is a shared-bank workflow rather than a direct character-to-character mail transfer.
Practical steps
- Log in to the character that currently holds the gold.
- Open the Warband Bank at an available bank location and deposit the amount you want to make available.
- Log in to the destination character on the same Battle.net account and region. That character must belong to the same Warband scope.
- Open the Warband Bank again and manually withdraw the gold.
- Verify the destination character’s personal gold balance before spending it.
This method answers the common “How do I send gold to my alt?” question without relying on ordinary mail. It also handles an Alliance-to-Horde or Horde-to-Alliance transfer when both characters are yours and fall within the same regional Warband. The documented boundary is the region: do not extend the rule to a character on a different region.
Blizzard’s separate Warband announcement also describes the bank as a place for shared access to eligible items and bank tabs. For gold, the key operational detail is still manual deposit followed by manual withdrawal; the feature should not be confused with a currency that automatically appears in every character’s purse.

Gold and currencies are related but separate systems. Blizzard says shareable currencies can be transferred between Warband characters directly through the currency interface. That does not make every currency transferable.
What can prevent a transfer?
- Character progression: Blizzard says many currencies remain non-transferable because they represent important character-based progression.
- Designed-for-one-character currencies: Some currencies intended for a character’s primary use may permit a transfer but apply a loss.
- Region boundary: The Warband description is regional, so it should not be read as authorizing transfers between different regions.
Before moving a currency, inspect the currency interface for the transfer control and the amount that will arrive. If the interface shows a reduced amount, that loss is part of the documented design rather than a mail fee or an Auction House commission. If no transfer control exists, treat the currency as character-bound unless current Blizzard documentation says otherwise.

Ordinary mail: what is known, and what is not
Do not use an old mail rule as a complete description of the current game. Blizzard’s Patch 5.4 notes, published September 10, 2013, recorded that cross-realm mail could send account-bound items to another character on the same account, but not other items or gold. That is useful historical context, not a current all-purpose promise about every mail route.
Rank #3
The cited current material does not establish a complete matrix for ordinary mail by realm, faction, account relationship, item type, or gold amount. Consequently, an exact statement such as “you can always mail gold cross-realm” or “all cross-faction mail is blocked” would go beyond the documented evidence here.

- First determine whether the recipient is your own Warband character. If so, use the Warband Bank for gold rather than relying on ordinary mail.
- If the recipient is another player, open the in-game mail interface and check whether the recipient resolves and whether the attachment or gold field is available.
- Read the confirmation screen before sending. Do not infer eligibility from a historical forum post or an old patch note.
- For a valuable transfer, send a small test amount or a low-value item first and confirm receipt.
- If the game blocks the action, use the error message and current Blizzard support information as the authority for that account, realm, faction, and item combination.
Blizzard’s Patch 7.1 notes also documented a confirmation dialog when sending gold or items through mail and trade. That note describes a user-interface safeguard; it does not establish today’s cross-realm or cross-faction limits.

Direct player trade is not a Warband transfer
Direct trade is an exchange between players in the trade window. It is not the same as withdrawing from a Warband Bank, and Warband membership does not automatically grant an unrelated player access to your gold.
The cited Blizzard notes do not provide a current, complete rule set for direct trade’s realm, faction, distance, account, or gold limits. The safest practical distinction is:
Rank #4
- Used Book in Good Condition
- For your own characters, use the Warband Bank.
- For another player, use direct trade only when the in-game trade window accepts both participants and displays the intended gold or items.
- Confirm the final amount and items in the confirmation step; Patch 7.1’s documented confirmation dialog shows why this check matters.
- Do not treat a successful trade with one character as proof that every realm or faction pairing is supported.
This separation also helps diagnose failed transfers. A Warband Bank failure points to account, region, or character eligibility; a direct-trade failure belongs to the current player-trade rules; a mail failure belongs to the mail system. Switching systems does not bypass a region or account boundary.

The regular Auction House and the WoW Token exchange are different markets. The Token exchange is a dedicated regional service with its own pricing, binding, and redemption rules. Do not assume that a Token follows the same behavior as an ordinary item auction or as a direct gold trade.
Buying a Token with gold
- Open the WoW Token exchange and review the currently displayed regional gold price.
- Buy the Token with gold if you meet the current account and purchase requirements shown by the game.
- Blizzard says the purchased Token is delivered through the mailbox.
- Redeem it for game time. Once bought for gold, the Token becomes soulbound and cannot be resold.
The price is dynamic and connected to supply and demand. No live price should be assumed from an old guide, and the cited material does not provide a current number.
Listing a shop-purchased Token
When a player lists a Token purchased with real money, Blizzard says the system quotes a gold amount and locks that amount once the Token is listed. The historical Token FAQ states: “No, each WoW Token can only be sold once.” In practical terms, a listed Token is not a resellable item that can circulate through multiple buyers.

Historical Token limits: do not mistake them for current limits
Blizzard’s July 23, 2015 update listed these limits:
- 10 Tokens per week: Tokens purchasable with real money for sale on the Auction House.
- 36 Tokens per 24 months: Tokens purchasable with gold.
- 10 Tokens held: maximum inventory across the Battle.net account.
Those numbers belong to Blizzard’s 2015 update. The cited material does not verify that they remain the current limits in 2026. Treat the limit shown by the present in-game Token interface or current Blizzard support as controlling, rather than planning a purchase around these historical figures.

A decision checklist for common gold questions
“How do I send gold to my alt?”
Deposit it in the Warband Bank, switch to the alt, and withdraw it. This is the clearest documented path for your own characters in the same region.
“Can I move gold to an alt on another realm?”
Warband documentation says Warbands span realms and factions within one region, and the Warband Bank supports manual gold withdrawal across Warband characters. Confirm that both characters are on the same Battle.net account and region.
“Can Alliance and Horde characters share gold?”
Yes, when they are your Warband characters within the documented regional scope. Use the Warband Bank rather than assuming ordinary mail or direct trade has identical rules.
“Can I mail gold cross-realm?”
Do not rely on the historical Patch 5.4 restriction or on an old guide as a current universal answer. The current cited documentation does not establish a complete ordinary-mail matrix. Check the recipient and attachment controls in the current client, and test with a small amount if the game permits the action.
“How does gold become game time?”
Use the WoW Token exchange, not ordinary mail or direct trade. Buy a Token at the displayed regional price, receive it through the mailbox, and redeem it for game time. The gold-purchased Token becomes soulbound.
Quick Recap
What to verify before a large transfer
- Are both characters on the same Battle.net account?
- Are they in the same region?
- Is the item or currency actually Warband-transferable?
- Does the currency interface show a transfer loss?
- Are you using the Warband Bank for your own alt instead of an unnecessary mail or trade route?
- For mail or direct trade with another player, does the current interface accept the recipient and show the correct amount?
- For Tokens, are you following the current price and limit displayed in the game rather than a historical number?
