World Rugby’s 2020 female-player guidance attributes several findings to Breast Research Australia (BRA). The page does not state the underlying studies’ publication years or sample sizes, and the figures are not identified as rugby-only results:
- 60% of women in the cited contact-sport research reported a breast injury.
- Among those who reported an injury, 33% said it adversely affected performance.
- Of those who wore breast padding, 50% perceived their chosen padding as ineffective.
- Among those who had experienced breast injury, 49% did not report it or seek treatment.
- A previous BRA study found 85% were not wearing a size or fit suitable for their body shape.
These are findings reported by World Rugby, not current prevalence estimates for all women rugby players. World Rugby also advises that breast injuries should be assessed and treated like other soft-tissue injuries.

Padding must preserve movement
World Rugby’s body-padding specification sets a direct ergonomic requirement: padding should minimize discomfort, and “all normal playing movements should not be impeded” by padded clothing. It also calls for appropriate materials and finishes that do not harm the wearer or other players, including avoiding rough edges or hazardous rigid components. Materials should withstand ordinary exposure to ultraviolet light, dirt, perspiration, toiletries, soaps and detergents.

How match rules affect clothing choices
For rugby union, match clothing is governed by World Rugby Regulation 12, read alongside the current Law 4 and the applicable performance specifications. The regulation permits specified compliant items such as body padding and headgear, while restricting other clothing items that exceed its stated thickness limit. Because rules and specifications can be updated, teams should use the current official documents for match decisions rather than rely on a summary.
When choosing kit, check both the fit and whether the garment or accessory meets the relevant rules. A comfortable item is not automatically permitted for matches, and compliance alone does not mean it will fit every player well.
