Wireless rear speakers and a subwoofer do not pair with every BRAVIA television automatically. They pair with a compatible Sony soundbar or Theatre system, and compatibility depends on that system’s exact model number. Sony documents a separate setup for certain speakers or subwoofers that connect directly to a compatible BRAVIA TV over Wi‑Fi, so first decide whether the speakers should belong to the Theatre system or to the television.
The reliable process is: identify the audio-system model, confirm the accessory models on Sony’s compatibility list, update the system, then use either the BRAVIA Connect app or the model-specific Help Guide. The HT-S2000, for example, uses BRAVIA Connect and supports SA-RS3S rear speakers plus SA-SW3 or SA-SW5 subwoofers.

The connection is model-dependent
A Sony wireless rear-speaker or subwoofer kit is an optional extension of a compatible soundbar or home-theatre system. The accessory does not become compatible merely because the television carries the BRAVIA name. Sony’s compatibility list is organized by audio-system model, and Sony warns that supported products and regional availability vary. Check the exact model before buying or attempting to pair anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSony’s current compatibility guidance covers newer BRAVIA Connect products as well as older systems that use firmware and model-specific Help Guide instructions. The list includes BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7, Bar 8, Bar 9, Theatre Quad and Theatre Trio, but the rear speakers and subwoofers supported by one system may not work with another. See Sony’s optional-speaker compatibility list for the model-by-model result.

Find the exact Theatre or soundbar model
Read the model number from the soundbar, its label, the original documentation or the Sony control app. A television model number by itself is not enough. Write down the audio-system model and the exact accessory model before starting setup.
| System type | Documented connection route | What Sony requires |
|---|---|---|
| BRAVIA Connect-compatible Theatre or soundbar | BRAVIA Connect app | Update the audio system before adding optional speakers, then use the app’s speaker-connection flow. |
| HT-S2000 | BRAVIA Connect: Easy Initial Setup → Speaker Connection | Use the app during initial setup or later; supported accessories are listed separately below. |
| Older system without BRAVIA Connect support | Current firmware and the model’s Help Guide | Follow the instructions for that exact model. Some manuals recommend completing initial setup without optional speakers, updating, and adding them afterward. |
Sony’s connection-troubleshooting article distinguishes the app-based and legacy routes. Do not assume that a menu shown for one Theatre model exists on another.
Confirm the accessory models
For the HT-S2000, Sony states that the compatible models are SA-RS3S rear speakers, SA-SW3 subwoofer and SA-SW5 subwoofer. The rear-speaker and subwoofer roles are different: SA-RS3S adds surround channels behind the seating position, while SA-SW3 or SA-SW5 provides low-frequency output. This list applies to the HT-S2000 only, not to every BRAVIA Theatre system. Sony’s exact statement and model list are in its HT-S2000 support article.

| Audio system | Rear-speaker option | Subwoofer options |
|---|---|---|
| HT-S2000 | SA-RS3S | SA-SW3; SA-SW5 |
If your system is a Bar 7, Bar 8, Bar 9, Theatre Quad, Theatre Trio or another HT model, return to Sony’s compatibility list and select that exact system. A physically similar Sony accessory can still be unsupported.
Decide whether the speakers pair to the Theatre or the TV
There are two different arrangements:
- Theatre-system arrangement: the rear speakers and subwoofer pair with the compatible soundbar or Theatre system. This is the normal route when the soundbar is the audio hub.
- Direct-to-TV arrangement: certain optional speakers or subwoofers connect directly to a compatible BRAVIA TV over Wi‑Fi. This is covered by a separate Sony FAQ and is not interchangeable with soundbar pairing.
Sony’s direct-TV FAQ applies only to supported television and accessory combinations. If the question is unclear, identify both model numbers and decide which device should control the speakers before changing settings.
Prepare before pairing
- Confirm the exact Theatre or soundbar model and the exact rear-speaker or subwoofer model.
- Check that the combination appears in Sony’s compatibility list for your country or region. Sony notes that not every model is sold in every market.
- Update the soundbar, home-theatre system, AV amplifier or receiver to the latest available firmware. Sony explicitly recommends updating before connecting optional speakers in its compatibility guidance.
- Install or update BRAVIA Connect if your system supports it.
- Keep the optional speakers powered and positioned where they can communicate reliably with the main system. Do not hide them behind dense obstacles while pairing.
- If the model uses a legacy procedure, locate its current Help Guide before beginning; the button sequence and indicators differ by model.
Pair through BRAVIA Connect
For a BRAVIA Connect-compatible system, Sony puts the connection process in the app rather than requiring a generic Bluetooth pairing procedure. Labels can change with app updates, but Sony currently documents the following route for the HT-S2000.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Update the app and the audio system. Install BRAVIA Connect on your mobile device, update it if an update is offered, and bring the Theatre or soundbar to the latest firmware.
- Open the system in BRAVIA Connect. If the soundbar has not been configured, begin its initial setup. If it is already working, open the existing device in the app and choose the speaker-connection function.
- Use the documented menu path. For the HT-S2000, select Easy Initial Setup → Speaker Connection. Sony says this path can be used after the soundbar’s original setup as well as during first setup.
- Follow the accessory prompts. Turn on the compatible rear speakers and/or subwoofer when the app requests them and complete the on-screen connection sequence. Use only the model numbers confirmed for your system.
- Finish and test. Allow the app to complete the registration, then play content that contains dialogue, surround effects and bass. Confirm that the rear channels and low-frequency output are coming from the intended speakers.
If the app cannot find an accessory, stop rather than repeatedly resetting it. Recheck the system model, accessory model, firmware version and regional compatibility, then consult Sony’s app-versus-legacy troubleshooting instructions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use the legacy Help Guide when BRAVIA Connect is not supported
Some older Sony soundbars and home-theatre systems do not use BRAVIA Connect. For those products, Sony directs owners to the latest software and the Help Guide for the specific model.
- Identify the exact model and download or open its current Sony Help Guide.
- Update the main audio system to the newest firmware specified for that model.
- Follow the Help Guide’s optional-speaker or wireless-speaker procedure, including any required pairing mode or indicator check.
- If the guide instructs you to do so, complete the soundbar’s initial setup without the optional speakers, install the update, and add the speakers afterward.
- Run the model’s speaker test or play surround content to verify each channel.
There is no universal button combination for legacy systems. Applying instructions from a different HT model can leave the accessory unpaired or change an unrelated setting.

Fix connection failures and dropouts
The accessory is not detected
- Verify that the rear speaker or subwoofer model is listed for the exact soundbar or Theatre system.
- Install the latest firmware before trying again.
- Use BRAVIA Connect if the system supports it; otherwise use the model-specific Help Guide.
- Power-cycle the main system and accessory, then repeat the documented pairing process.
Sony’s guidance treats model compatibility, current software and the correct setup route as the first checks, rather than assuming a hardware fault.
Sound cuts out or becomes noisy
After pairing, wireless performance can be affected by the room. Sony recommends reviewing the wireless-speaker settings, including the playback-quality setting and, on models that expose it, the wireless-channel setting. Try the available quality or channel options one at a time and retest with the same content.
Also inspect the path between the main system and the optional speaker. Walls and other obstructions can weaken the wireless environment. Sony gives these placement examples:

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Move a speaker more than 5 cm (2 inches) from a side wall when the side cannot be cleared.
- Move it more than 10 cm (4 inches) from a rear wall when the rear cannot be cleared.
Those distances are troubleshooting suggestions, not a guarantee for every room. Keep the speakers in open positions, avoid enclosing them in cabinets, and change one placement or wireless setting at a time so you can identify what helped. Sony’s full guidance is in “The sound skips or there is noise coming from the speakers.”
The TV works but the optional speakers do not
This usually indicates that the television is being mistaken for the audio system. The BRAVIA name does not establish compatibility. Check whether the optional speakers are meant to pair with the Theatre soundbar or directly with the TV, then use the corresponding Sony instructions. A TV-only setup and a soundbar-based setup are separate arrangements.
How to choose between compatible options
When Sony lists more than one compatible accessory, make the decision in this order:
Recommended Free Tools
- Compatibility: eliminate any model not listed for your exact Theatre or soundbar.
- Role: choose rear speakers if you need surround channels behind the seating area; choose a subwoofer if you need dedicated bass output. A compatible system may support both.
- Setup route: prefer the app flow on BRAVIA Connect systems and the Help Guide flow on legacy systems.
- Region: confirm that the accessory is sold and supported in your market.
- Room layout: select an arrangement that leaves a reasonably clear wireless path and permits the placement adjustments Sony recommends.
Compatibility documentation establishes whether an accessory can connect; it does not by itself rank sound quality, bass output or value between models. Make those judgments only from product-specific evidence for your exact system and room.
What a successful setup looks like
The main Theatre or soundbar remains the controlling audio system. The optional rear speakers and subwoofer appear as connected components in the app or in the system’s status and speaker settings, and playback routes the surround and bass duties to them. If one component is missing, intermittent or attached to the wrong device, return to model verification and firmware checks before changing room placement.
For an HT-S2000, the concrete example is straightforward: confirm SA-RS3S and SA-SW3 or SA-SW5 compatibility, update the soundbar, open BRAVIA Connect, choose Easy Initial Setup followed by Speaker Connection, and complete the prompts. For every other BRAVIA Theatre or HT model, substitute the accessory models and procedure Sony lists for that exact system.
