Microsoft documents support for text, HTML, and Bitmap content, a maximum of 4 MB for each item, and a list of up to 25 entries. Newer unpinned entries replace older ones, while pinned entries survive a restart.
The feature is separate from ordinary copy and paste: copying still puts the latest item on the clipboard, and Clipboard History gives you additional items to choose from. Optional cross-device sync can transfer clipboard content between Windows devices signed in to the same Microsoft account or work account, but Microsoft’s public support pages do not define every cloud or local-storage detail.

What Windows Clipboard History is
Clipboard History is a Windows 10 and Windows 11 feature for revisiting recently copied content. Pressing Windows key + V opens a panel containing eligible recent items. The first time you use it, Windows displays a prompt; select Turn on to enable the history.
Regular clipboard behavior does not change. Ctrl+C still places the current selection on the clipboard and Ctrl+V still pastes the current item. History adds a selectable list so you can choose an earlier item instead of copying it again.

Microsoft’s current support guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. Names and layouts can vary slightly by release, but the feature is managed from Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and the Windows+V panel.
What it stores—and what the limits mean
Supported content types
Microsoft lists three content categories for Clipboard History:
- Text, such as words, numbers, code, and plain-text snippets.
- HTML, which can preserve formatted content copied from a web page or application.
- Bitmap, the image format category identified in Microsoft’s documentation.
That list is not a promise that every application’s private or proprietary clipboard format will appear in History. Clipboard History should not be treated as a complete archive of everything you copy. In particular, the documented limits do not say that Windows stores an entire copied file, folder, application object, or every format an application places on the clipboard.
Per-item size and list length
Microsoft specifies a maximum of 4 MB per item. This is an item limit, not a statement that the history can hold 4 MB multiplied by 25 in every situation. A large image or formatted selection that exceeds the documented per-item limit may not be retained in History.
The list holds up to 25 copied entries. As additional items arrive, older unpinned entries are automatically removed to make room. The 25-entry list is therefore a rolling selection of recent items, not a permanent record.

How persistence works: unpinned versus pinned
| Item state | What happens when you copy more items | What happens when the PC restarts |
|---|---|---|
| Unpinned | Remains subject to the 25-entry limit and can be removed as newer items arrive. | Microsoft says unpinned history is cleared at each restart. |
| Pinned | Marked to remain available instead of being treated like ordinary rolling entries. | Remains in Clipboard History after a restart, according to Microsoft’s support guidance. |
To pin an item, open Windows key + V and use the item’s pin control. Pin only content you deliberately want to retain: a pinned item can outlive a restart even though ordinary history does not.
How to turn Clipboard History on and open it
- Press Windows key + V.
- If Windows shows the setup prompt, select Turn on.
- Copy text, HTML content, or a bitmap from an application.
- Press Windows key + V again and select an entry to paste it into the active application.
If the panel does not open, use Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and check the Clipboard History setting. Microsoft’s labels and page layout can change between Windows releases, so follow the label shown on your device rather than assuming every version looks identical.
Cross-device sync: optional, account-linked, and content-dependent
Turn sync on
Open Start > Settings > System > Clipboard and turn on the option for clipboard history across devices. Microsoft ties this feature to the same Microsoft account or work account being used on the participating Windows devices.
Leaving this option off keeps Clipboard History local to the device for the purposes described by the setting. Turning it on creates the possibility of transferring eligible clipboard content to other signed-in Windows devices, so the choice should match the sensitivity of what you copy.
Automatic and manual synchronization
Microsoft documents two user choices:
- Automatic sync: copied text can synchronize automatically when the cross-device setting is enabled.
- Manual sync: open Windows+V, choose an individual item, and select that item’s sync control. Microsoft’s explanation says the text is uploaded to the cloud and synchronized to the other devices.
Automatic sync is convenient for recurring text snippets; manual sync gives you an item-level decision. The documentation does not establish that every content type follows the same path in every Windows release or account configuration.

Images and work or school accounts
Microsoft’s connected-experiences documentation describes Cloud Clipboard for copying images and text between Windows devices signed in with a work or school account. That description should not be generalized into a guarantee that images synchronize for every personal account, edition, or release. If an image does not appear on another device, check the account type, the Windows version, and whether the item is a supported bitmap within the size limit.

Delete a single entry
- Press Windows key + V to open Clipboard History.
- Find the item you no longer want.
- Open that item’s More options control.
- Select Delete.
This removes the selected entry without requiring you to clear the rest of the list.
Clear all clipboard data
You can clear the list either from Windows Settings or from the history panel:
- Settings route: Start > Settings > System > Clipboard > Clear clipboard data.
- Panel route: open Windows key + V and select Clear all.
Microsoft’s instructions state that pinned items are excepted from clearing. If a pinned entry remains after using Clear all, remove its pin or delete that item individually.
Clipboard History is not Activity History
These similarly named Windows features serve different purposes. Clipboard History is the Windows+V list of copied content. Microsoft describes Activity History as tracking activities such as apps and services used, files opened, and websites browsed, with local storage described for that feature.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Microsoft’s public guidance does not specify
Microsoft’s user-facing documentation explains the visible controls, formats, limits, restart behavior, and sync choices. The cited pages do not establish all of the following:
- The exact local folder or file path used for Clipboard History.
- The internal database or file format.
- Encryption details for local data or data in transit.
- How long synchronized clipboard content is retained in Microsoft’s cloud.
- Whether every type of sensitive content is filtered before synchronization.
Consequently, you should not treat the feature as either a guaranteed secure vault or a documented forensic archive. The practical controls Microsoft documents are enabling or disabling history, pinning, deleting individual entries, clearing unpinned data, and choosing whether cross-device synchronization is enabled.
Choosing the right setting for common situations
| Situation | Setting or action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You need to paste several recent snippets on one PC. | Use local Clipboard History with Windows+V. | History provides multiple recent choices without recopying. |
| You need a snippet after a restart. | Pin it before restarting. | Microsoft says unpinned history is cleared on restart. |
| You work across two Windows PCs. | Enable clipboard history across devices and sign in with the same eligible account. | Sync is optional and account-linked. |
| You occasionally need to move one text item. | Use the item-level manual sync control. | It avoids enabling automatic synchronization for every copied text item. |
| You copied sensitive material and no longer need it. | Delete the item, or clear clipboard data; check pinned entries separately. | Individual deletion and bulk clearing have different scopes, and pinned items are excepted. |
Practical limits and failure checks
An item is missing from History
- Confirm that Clipboard History is enabled in Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Check whether more than 25 newer entries have displaced an unpinned item.
- Consider whether the content was larger than the documented 4 MB per-item limit.
- Check whether the application copied a format outside Microsoft’s documented text, HTML, or Bitmap categories.
An item disappeared after reboot
That is expected for unpinned history under Microsoft’s documented behavior. Pin content that must remain available across a restart.

An item is not appearing on another device
- Verify that clipboard history across devices is enabled on the source and destination devices.
- Confirm that both devices use the same Microsoft account or work account required by the setting.
- For text, check whether automatic sync is enabled or use the item’s manual sync control.
- For images, remember that Microsoft’s connected-experiences description specifically discusses Cloud Clipboard for work or school accounts; availability is not guaranteed for every account or release.
Key takeaways
Windows Clipboard History is a 25-entry rolling list for supported text, HTML, and Bitmap clipboard content, with a documented 4 MB limit per item. It is opened with Windows+V, enabled the first time with Turn on, and managed under Settings > System > Clipboard. Unpinned entries clear when Windows restarts; pinned entries remain. Cross-device transfer is an optional, account-linked feature with separate automatic and manual text-sync choices. Microsoft documents the controls and user-visible limits, but not the complete storage, encryption, or cloud-retention architecture.
For the official controls and limits, see Microsoft’s Using the clipboard guidance. Microsoft’s description of Cloud Clipboard and connected experiences is available at Essential services and connected experiences for Windows.
