Wind farms turn the kinetic energy of moving air into electricity, then move that electricity through a carefully staged network before it reaches users. Blades and a rotor spin a generator in each turbine’s nacelle. Cables collect the output from many turbines, a transformer raises its voltage for efficient transmission, and substations and local transformers route and reduce the voltage for homes, businesses and other loads.
The exact equipment, voltage levels, ownership and layout differ by project. The electrical path below describes the common system while identifying where a particular land-based or offshore plant may be different.

- Energy capture: Moving air pushes the blades, turning the rotor.
- Generation: The rotor drives a generator housed in the nacelle, converting mechanical motion into electrical energy.
- Collection: Cables and feeders gather electricity from individual turbines across the site.
- Voltage transformation and transmission: A plant transformer raises voltage so large amounts of power can travel with lower current and reduced line losses; a transmission line carries it into the wider grid.
- Distribution: Substations connect the high-voltage transmission network to local distribution circuits, and transformers lower voltage for delivery to end users.
This is a power-flow description, not a dedicated wire from one turbine to one house. Once electricity enters an interconnected grid, generation and demand are balanced across many facilities and lines.

How a wind turbine makes electricity
Blades and rotor capture wind energy
Wind contains kinetic energy. When air flows across the aerodynamic blades, it creates lift and turns the rotor. The rotor is the rotating assembly that transfers the captured mechanical energy into the turbine’s drivetrain and generator.
A wind turbine is not simply a traditional windmill. A windmill commonly provides mechanical work such as pumping or grinding, whereas a wind turbine uses a generator to produce electricity. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes utility-scale wind energy as large turbines installed on land or in water to feed electricity into major U.S. grids.
The nacelle and generator
The nacelle sits behind the rotor and contains the generator and other operating equipment. As the rotor turns, the generator converts that mechanical rotation into electrical energy. Controls adjust the turbine’s operation as wind conditions change and protect equipment during abnormal conditions.
Each turbine produces power independently, but a wind farm operates the turbines as one generating facility. DOE’s distributed-wind explainer describes a utility-scale wind farm as typically greater than 20 megawatts and potentially containing dozens to several hundred turbines. That description conveys common scale, not a universal regulatory threshold; project definitions and sizes vary.
How turbines are connected inside the wind farm
Collector cables and feeders
Electricity leaves each turbine through the plant’s electrical collection system. Underground or overhead cables, depending on the project, connect groups of turbines to feeders. Those feeders carry the combined output toward the plant substation.

The number of feeders, their routes, operating voltage and switching equipment are project-specific. NREL’s technical description of variable-speed wind turbines identifies collector feeders, a main transformer and the transmission connection as distinct parts of the plant electrical system. A single diagram should therefore be treated as an example rather than a universal design.
The plant substation
At the collection substation, incoming circuits are switched, protected and combined. The substation’s main transformer raises the voltage to the level required by the project’s interconnection. Raising voltage allows the same power to be transmitted at lower current, which reduces resistive losses in the transmission conductors.

DOE’s turbine text summarizes the handoff this way: “In a utility-scale wind plant, each turbine generates electricity which runs to a substation where it then transfers to the grid where it powers our communities.” The statement describes the functional sequence; the physical arrangement and ownership of the substation can differ from one project to another.
Transmission and distribution are different jobs
After the plant transformer, electricity normally enters a transmission line or another approved interconnection facility. Transmission moves large quantities of power over longer distances between generating plants, substations and major load centers. Distribution begins after substations connect the bulk system to local circuits.
| Network section | Primary role | What happens to wind-farm electricity |
|---|---|---|
| Collection system | Gather output within the project | Feeder circuits combine electricity from many turbines and carry it to the plant substation. |
| Plant transformer and interconnection | Prepare power for the bulk grid | Voltage is raised and protective equipment connects the project to an approved transmission or distribution point. |
| Transmission | Move bulk electricity over distance | High-voltage lines carry the plant’s output into the interconnected grid. |
| Substation | Link bulk and local networks | Switching and transformers route power from transmission toward distribution circuits. |
| Distribution | Deliver electricity locally | Local transformers reduce voltage for homes, businesses and other users. |
Some projects connect directly to a distribution network rather than a high-voltage transmission line. That choice depends on project size, available capacity, distance to existing lines and the utility’s interconnection requirements.

What “connecting to the grid” actually means
The grid is an interconnected system
The DOE’s wind-energy FAQ states: “The U.S. power grid consists of a huge number of interconnected transmission lines that connect a variety of generation sources to loads.” Wind farms become one source among many on that system. Electricity from a particular turbine is not assigned to a particular customer, and an operator cannot follow those exact electrons to a specific home.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAt any instant, grid operators manage the combined balance between generation and demand. Power flows respond to electrical conditions across the network, while market and operating rules determine which resources are scheduled or dispatched.
Connection point and equipment vary
A project’s point of interconnection may be a transmission substation, a new line, or a distribution facility. The project may build a collector substation and a short transmission tie, or connect through existing utility equipment. Voltage levels, breaker arrangements, communications, metering and protection settings are established during engineering and interconnection studies rather than by a single nationwide template.
Why wind output changes and how operators manage it
Variable generation is expected
Wind speed changes by the minute, season and location, so a wind farm’s output rises and falls. Grid connection does not make the wind blow continuously, and a wind farm does not by itself guarantee constant power. Storage may be added to some projects, but it is not an automatic component of every wind farm.
DOE explains that grid operators already balance changing demand and generation contingencies by using the interconnected system and other available generators. Forecasts, scheduling, reserves, transmission coordination and curtailment are among the tools used to keep supply and demand in balance.

Turbine controls can support grid operation
Modern turbines can provide active-power control that contributes to frequency regulation, according to DOE’s discussion of wind integration. This is a capability, not a promise that every project supplies every grid service. Whether a plant provides a particular service depends on its controls, interconnection agreement, market rules and the operator’s needs.
Integration is a planning issue
Wind-integration studies examine reliability, operating costs, transmission congestion, curtailment and how the plant responds to system events. A project can have abundant wind resources yet face limits on how much power its connection or nearby transmission network can accept at a given time.
How a wind project gets approved for interconnection
Before construction, developers evaluate more than the wind resource. DOE identifies several factors that shape development:
- Wind speed and expected production at the proposed site.
- Access to transmission or distribution capacity.
- Environmental and community impacts.
- Land rights, permits and financing.
- Utility approvals and grid-impact studies for a grid-connected project.
The order, names and scope of studies vary by jurisdiction and utility. A study may identify required network upgrades, protection changes, operating limits or a different point of interconnection. Those requirements are project-specific, so a generic approval checklist cannot substitute for the applicable utility and regulatory process.
Land-based and offshore wind connections
Both land-based and offshore projects use the same basic energy chain—rotor, generator, collection system, transformer and grid connection—but their physical layouts differ.
Best Value
| Design consideration | Land-based wind farm | Offshore wind farm |
|---|---|---|
| Turbine setting | Turbines are installed on land, often across a large area with roads and construction access. | Turbines stand in water and require marine construction, specialized vessels and subsea infrastructure. |
| Collection route | Collector cables commonly run between turbines and an onshore or nearby project substation; the exact routing varies. | Inter-array cables collect turbines offshore and export cables carry power toward shore. |
| Grid connection | The project may connect to a nearby transmission line or, for some smaller facilities, a distribution network. | Power generally reaches an onshore connection point through an export system, with equipment and route determined by the project. |
| Main constraints | Land use, permitting, community concerns, environmental effects and available transmission. | Marine conditions, seabed route, coastal landing, environmental effects, permitting and longer export distances. |
These are system-design choices made by developers and utilities, not alternatives a typical household selects when using grid electricity.
A practical walkthrough: what happens after one turbine starts
- Wind turns the rotor. Airflow across the blades produces rotation.
- The generator produces electricity. The rotor’s mechanical motion is converted inside the nacelle.
- The turbine joins a feeder. A collection cable carries its output with that of other turbines.
- The plant substation combines and transforms the output. Switchgear and protection manage the circuits, while the main transformer raises voltage for the grid connection.
- The interconnection line carries power into the wider network. Transmission or distribution equipment accepts the plant under the terms of its approval.
- Substations and local transformers route delivery. The bulk system connects to distribution circuits, where voltage is reduced for end users.
- Operators balance the system continuously. Wind output, demand, scheduled generation and network conditions determine real-time power flows.
At no stage is there a reserved “wind-farm wire” serving one customer. The grid’s interconnected design lets power from many generators support loads across the network.
How much electricity does wind provide?
Wind turbines were the source of about 10% of U.S. electricity generation in 2022, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That figure is specifically for the United States and the 2022 calendar year; it is not a current worldwide share or a timeless percentage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The contribution of an individual wind farm depends on its turbine count, rated capacity, wind regime, availability, transmission limits and curtailment. A project’s nameplate capacity is the maximum rating of its equipment, not a guarantee that it produces that amount every hour.
Common points of confusion
“A transformer creates more electricity.”
A transformer changes voltage and current relationships; it does not create energy. The step-up transformer makes long-distance transfer more efficient by reducing current for a given power flow. Downstream transformers reduce voltage for safe local distribution.
“Transmission and distribution are the same thing.”
Transmission is the bulk, longer-distance network. Distribution is the local network that carries electricity from substations to users. Keeping those functions separate explains why a wind farm can be close to a distribution line yet still require a different connection design.
“Grid-connected wind means constant output.”
Connection provides a path into the interconnected system; it does not remove wind variability. Operators use forecasts, other generators, network coordination and, where available, storage or controllable demand to maintain balance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Every wind farm provides the same grid services.”
Control capability, equipment, contracts and market rules differ. Some modern turbines can contribute to frequency regulation through active-power control, but that service should not be assumed for every project.
