How Wildfire Smoke Affects Air Quality—and How to Reduce Exposure Indoors

Wildfire smoke can make indoor air unhealthy even when every window and door is closed. The safest general approach is to check current smoke conditions, limit air entering from outdoors, keep the home cool without compromising emergency exits, establish one cleaner-air room, and filter particles with equipment that fits the space. If the home becomes dangerously hot or officials order evacuation, leave rather than remain sealed indoors.

Why wildfire smoke can make indoor air unhealthy

Wildfire smoke is a mixture of fine particles and gases. The smallest particles, called PM2.5 because they are 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter, can penetrate deep into the lungs. Smoke and ash can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs, causing coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing. People with asthma, heart disease or lung disease may be affected more severely.

Smoke enters through open windows and doors, gaps around frames, mechanical fresh-air intakes and leaks in the building envelope. Indoor air often contains less PM2.5 than outdoor air, but “less” does not necessarily mean healthy. EPA educational guidance summarizes wildfire-event studies in which indoor PM2.5 averaged about 55% to 60% of outdoor levels when windows and doors were closed and no portable air cleaner was running. The reported range among homes was roughly 30% to 100%, so that figure is a broad population estimate, not a prediction for your building. Newer, tighter homes and homes with air conditioning often keep more pollution out, but only measurement can show how a particular home performs.

Exposure reduction matters most for children, older adults, pregnant people, people with heart or lung disease, and anyone who must spend substantial time outdoors, such as outdoor workers. If you feel unwell, move to cleaner air and contact a health-care professional. People with asthma should follow their asthma action plan; people with heart or lung disease should follow advice from their clinician.

A practical sequence for smoky days

1. Check current conditions and official alerts

Smoke can move and change quickly. Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map plus state, local and Tribal air-quality services for current PM2.5 readings, forecasts and health messages. Follow evacuation orders and emergency alerts even if the air-quality number near your home appears moderate. A forecast is not a guarantee: wind shifts, fire behavior and local terrain can change conditions within hours.

2. Reduce smoke entry without creating a heat emergency

  1. Close windows and exterior doors while smoke is present, but keep every required emergency exit usable.
  2. Set central HVAC and room air conditioners to recirculate if the system has a fresh-air intake. Close or disable the intake only as the equipment instructions allow.
  3. Use air conditioning, fans and shading to stay cool. Do not use a fan that simply pulls smoky outdoor air inside.
  4. If there is no air conditioning, watch indoor temperature closely. When outdoor air becomes cooler and cleaner, ventilate briefly, then close up and resume filtration.
  5. If the home cannot remain cool with windows closed, move to a cooler cleaner-air location or an official cooling shelter. Evacuate whenever authorities direct you to do so.

Sealing a home is a smoke-exposure measure, not an instruction to tolerate dangerous heat. Heat illness can become an immediate emergency, and a wildfire can make staying put unsafe regardless of indoor air quality.

3. Establish one cleaner-air room

Choose a room that can be closed off from the rest of the home and is large enough for the people who may shelter there. A bedroom or living room commonly works. Keep its windows and doors closed when that is safe, but never block an emergency exit. Bring medications, water, chargers and necessities into the room so people do not repeatedly open the door.

  • Place the air cleaner where air can enter and leave freely; do not push it against a wall, curtain or furniture.
  • Keep the room cool with air conditioning or a properly configured recirculating system.
  • Spend as much time as practical in the cleaner-air room while outdoor smoke is high.
  • Do not create indoor particles there by smoking, vaping, burning candles or incense, spraying aerosols, frying food or using combustion appliances.

A cleaner-air room is not sterile and does not remove every pollutant. Its purpose is to lower particle concentration compared with the rest of the home.

Choosing filtration for your home

There are three practical routes: a portable air cleaner for a room, filtration through a compatible central forced-air system, and a DIY box-fan cleaner. They can be combined. The right choice depends on room size, whether you have forced-air HVAC, equipment compatibility, noise tolerance, electricity use, filter availability and replacement cost.

Approach Coverage What to verify Main advantages Limitations
Portable air cleaner One room or a defined area Smoke CADR, room size, low-ozone certification, replacement filters Fast to deploy; works without central HVAC Usually does not clean the entire home; fan noise and filter cost vary
Central HVAC filter Rooms served by the forced-air system Whether the equipment can handle MERV 13 or the highest compatible rating; snug fit; fan operation Uses existing ductwork and can treat several rooms Does not help rooms outside the system; an overly restrictive filter can strain incompatible equipment
DIY box-fan cleaner Room where the fan is operating High-efficiency filters, airflow direction, sealed gaps, newer safety-listed fan Lower initial cost and useful when commercial units are unavailable Performance, noise and safety depend on construction and fan design

Portable air cleaners: size by smoke CADR

EPA advises selecting a portable cleaner with a smoke clean-air delivery rate (CADR) of at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. For a 300-square-foot room, that means a smoke CADR of at least 200. This is a sizing threshold, not a promise that the room will reach a particular concentration.

Use the smoke CADR value specifically; a marketing claim about maximum room area is not a substitute. If a room is larger than the unit’s rated area, use a larger unit or more than one unit. Keep doors to adjacent spaces closed if the goal is to protect the cleaner-air room.

Choose equipment certified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) or carrying an equivalent low-ozone designation. Avoid devices that intentionally generate ozone. Run the cleaner continuously at its highest tolerable fan setting during smoke events; lower settings move less air. Leave clearance around the intake and outlet, and inspect the filter. Replace it when it is visibly dirty, smells smoky or the manufacturer’s indicator says it is loaded.

Central HVAC: use the highest compatible filter

For a forced-air heating or cooling system, install a snugly fitting MERV 13 filter if the equipment can handle it. If MERV 13 is not compatible, use the highest rating specified by the manufacturer or an HVAC professional. A filter that is too restrictive can reduce airflow, impair heating or cooling and stress the system.

Set the system fan to run continuously or as often as practical while smoke is present, rather than only during heating or cooling calls. Check the filter more frequently than usual; smoke can load it quickly. If the filter bows, whistles, leaves gaps or causes airflow problems, turn to the equipment manual or a qualified technician instead of forcing a higher rating.

EPA’s educational summary cites an estimated indoor PM2.5 reduction of about 50% when a higher-efficiency HVAC filter is combined with continuous fan operation. The same summary reports about 24% reduction from continuous operation with a typical low-efficiency filter. These are study estimates attributed to Fisk and Chan (2017), not guaranteed results for an individual duct system.

DIY box-fan cleaners: a fallback with variable performance

A box-fan cleaner can be useful when a portable unit is unavailable or unaffordable, but construction quality matters. Use one or more high-efficiency HVAC filters, preferably MERV 13 or higher. Point every filter’s airflow arrow toward the fan, seal gaps between the fan and filter frame, and replace filters when they become dirty.

EPA advises using a box fan made since 2012 with a UL or ETL safety mark to reduce overheating risk. Keep the assembly on a stable surface with the intake and exhaust unobstructed. Do not leave a makeshift assembly running if the motor, plug or wiring becomes hot, smells burned or behaves erratically. DIY output varies with filter area, sealing and fan strength, and it may be louder than a commercial cleaner.

EPA’s educational page cites one May et al. (2021) example in which a DIY cleaner reduced PM2.5 by about 56% after 90 minutes in a larger room and about 99% within 60 minutes in a smaller room during a smoke event. Those results describe that study’s rooms and setup; they should not be generalized to every homemade device.

Keep indoor particle sources low

When outdoor smoke is high, avoid adding pollution indoors:

  • Do not smoke or vape indoors.
  • Do not burn candles or incense.
  • Avoid aerosol sprays and other products that create airborne droplets.
  • Do not operate fireplaces or gas, propane or wood-burning appliances unless necessary for safety.
  • Choose low-heat cooking; avoid frying, broiling and other methods that generate substantial particles.
  • Vacuum only with a vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter. Otherwise, damp-wipe surfaces or damp-mop floors to capture settled dust without stirring it up.

When outdoor air improves, briefly open windows or use the building’s fresh-air intake to flush accumulated indoor pollution. Check the current air-quality reading first, and close up again if smoke returns.

What to do if the home gets too hot

Closing windows is not safe if it causes dangerous indoor heat. Use air conditioning whenever possible, shade sun-facing windows, and move people who are vulnerable to heat into the coolest available room. If outdoor air is temporarily cleaner and cooler, ventilate during that window and then close windows when smoke rises again.

If you cannot keep the home both cool and reasonably protected from smoke, relocate to a cooler cleaner-air building, cooling center or shelter. Follow local emergency management instructions. Never stay in a sealed home because of smoke advice when officials tell you to evacuate.

Using a respirator when you must go outside

The primary protection is to reduce time and exertion outdoors. When outside exposure is unavoidable, a properly fitted NIOSH-approved particulate respirator marked N95 or P100 can significantly reduce inhalation of smoke particles.

  • Look for the NIOSH approval marking and an N95 or P100 designation.
  • Choose a model with two head straps that seals over the nose and under the chin.
  • Follow the package instructions for a seal check every time you put it on.
  • Replace it when it is damaged, dirty, difficult to breathe through or no longer seals.

Ear-loop masks, bandanas and ordinary dust masks should not be presented as equivalent protection against wildfire particles. Gaps around the edges can substantially reduce protection. NIOSH-approved respirators generally are not made in sizes suitable for young children. EPA guidance says children age two and older should wear one only if it fits and can be used correctly; children under two should not wear respirators. Pregnant people and anyone with heart or lung problems should ask a clinician because breathing through a respirator can be harder, particularly in heat or during exertion.

Symptoms and when to seek help

Smoke exposure can cause irritated eyes, nose or throat, cough, wheezing and difficulty breathing. Reduce exposure immediately by moving indoors to filtered air. Follow your prescribed asthma or heart-and-lung disease plan. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen; urgent breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion or severe weakness warrants emergency care.

Do not use a home air-quality reading to decide that symptoms are harmless. Indoor sensors can help identify trends, but they do not replace official warnings or medical advice.

Quick checklist for a wildfire-smoke event

  1. Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and local emergency alerts.
  2. Close windows and exterior doors while smoke is present, keeping emergency exits clear.
  3. Set HVAC or air-conditioning systems to recirculate when possible.
  4. Choose a cooler room as the cleaner-air room.
  5. Run a correctly sized portable cleaner, compatible HVAC filter or safe box-fan cleaner.
  6. Keep the cleaner’s airflow unobstructed and monitor filter condition.
  7. Stop indoor smoking, vaping, burning, aerosol use and high-particle cooking.
  8. Ventilate only during a verified cleaner, cooler period.
  9. Use a properly fitting NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 if outdoor exposure cannot be avoided.
  10. Relocate or evacuate if the home becomes too hot or authorities issue instructions.

Key takeaways

Closed windows reduce smoke entry but do not guarantee safe indoor air. A cleaner-air room, continuous filtration and removal of indoor particle sources can lower exposure. Portable cleaners should be selected by smoke CADR, central HVAC filters must be compatible with the equipment, and DIY box-fan units require careful construction and safety checks. Keep the home cool, use respirators only when they fit correctly, and prioritize official warnings over any general rule when heat or fire danger escalates.
