WhatsApp stickers are images you send from a chat’s sticker tray. What WhatsApp stickers are and where to find them
A WhatsApp sticker is a graphic sent inside an individual or group chat. It is not the same as an emoji character or a GIF: stickers are usually larger illustrations, photos, or animations selected from the sticker tray.
To send one, open a chat, open the sticker tray beside the message field, choose a sticker, and tap or click it. WhatsApp supports stickers in individual and group conversations. Android, iOS, web, Mac, and Windows expose the feature, but icon placement, menu names, and the exact gesture can differ by platform and app version.

The tray normally separates downloaded packs from shortcuts such as Favorites and Recents. You can also locate stickers with text or emoji search rather than opening every pack manually.
How sticker packs work
A pack is a downloadable collection that stays together in WhatsApp’s sticker manager. Packs are useful when you want a consistent theme—such as reactions, animals, celebrations, or illustrations—instead of searching for individual images.
Browse and download a pack
- Open any chat and open the sticker tray.
- Open the pack browser or the add-sticker option.
- Review suggested packs in the WhatsApp Sticker Store and select one for details.
- Choose the download or add control. The pack then appears with your other downloaded packs.
Suggested packs may appear below the packs already on your device. The pack browser can show who owns and who created a pack. In many versions, holding a sticker reveals its pack owner and creator, which helps you identify where a particular sticker came from.

Downloaded packs are managed under My Stickers (the label can vary by platform). You can reorder packs so frequently used collections appear earlier in the tray, or remove a pack you no longer want. Removing a downloaded pack affects your pack list; it is separate from removing one sticker from the Recents list.

Favorites and Recents: the difference
Favorites
Favorites is a personal shortlist. When you see a sticker you expect to use again, use the sticker’s context menu or press-and-hold action and choose the option to add it to Favorites. The saved sticker can then be opened from the Favorites area of the sticker tray, even if you do not remember which pack contained it.

Favorites is for intentional, longer-term access. It is especially useful for a small set of common responses, while the original pack remains available for browsing the rest of its collection.
Recents
Recents is automatic: it lists stickers you sent recently. It is useful when you want to repeat an image from a conversation without searching again. The list is not a permanent archive. If you remove an item from Recents, you only remove that shortcut; the sticker itself is not deleted from WhatsApp, and a downloaded pack is not removed.

Sticker suggestions and search
Emoji-triggered suggestions
WhatsApp can suggest stickers when you type a common emoji at the beginning of a message. Its help instructions describe a single-emoji trigger for these suggestions. If you continue typing, the suggestion is dismissed. This is a quick way to find a matching image without opening the full search interface.
Search by text or emoji
For a broader search, open the sticker search control and enter text or an emoji. WhatsApp can show relevant stickers from WhatsApp and from third-party providers. Search results are intended to save time when you know the feeling or subject you want but not the pack that contains it.
Search behavior and available labels can change as WhatsApp updates its apps. If a search button is not visible, update WhatsApp and check the sticker tray on the platform you are using; web and desktop layouts can differ from the phone apps.

Messages and calls
WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are protected by end-to-end encryption. Under that protection, people outside the chat—including WhatsApp and Meta—cannot read, listen to, or share the contents of those personal communications.
Sticker-search requests
If you choose to search for more sticker suggestions, WhatsApp says only the emoji used for that search is shared with WhatsApp and third-party providers. Online sources can then use that search term to find relevant results. This disclosure concerns the search input and results process; it does not say that third-party providers receive the contents of your personal chat.
The documentation does not establish every data practice of every third-party sticker provider or every possible sticker-related data flow. Therefore, the precise conclusion is: the personal chat remains covered by WhatsApp’s end-to-end-encryption statement, while an intentional sticker search sends the specified emoji to WhatsApp and third-party providers. Avoid treating that as a blanket guarantee about all external services.
Practical privacy choices
- Send a sticker from a downloaded pack, Favorites, or Recents when you do not need a broader search.
- Remember that a sticker is still content visible to every participant in the chat, including all members of a group.
- Check the pack owner and creator information before downloading unfamiliar collections.
- Use the latest official WhatsApp release so privacy and sticker controls match the current documentation for your platform.
How to create custom WhatsApp stickers
WhatsApp’s built-in tools let you turn a photo into a custom sticker and add that sticker to a new or existing pack. The exact buttons depend on whether you are using Android, iPhone, or a desktop client, but the workflow is generally to open the sticker creator from the tray, select a photo, edit the result if offered, and save or send it.

Photo-based custom sticker workflow
- Open a chat and open the sticker tray.
- Choose the create or custom-sticker control.
- Select a photo from your device and use the available crop, cutout, drawing, text, or other editing controls.
- Send the finished sticker immediately, or add it to a new or existing pack.
- Open the pack later from the sticker manager to use the sticker again.
WhatsApp also documents packaging custom stickers in a separate app for publication through Google Play or Apple’s App Store. That route is intended for creators who want to distribute a complete pack rather than keep stickers only on their own device.
File and pack limits
These are the official upload requirements described for custom packs:

Custom sticker packs are documented as available on the latest Android and iOS versions. If the creator is missing, update WhatsApp first. Stickers must be legal, authorized, and acceptable under WhatsApp’s terms; do not package copyrighted characters, private images, or someone else’s artwork without the necessary rights.

AI stickers are a separate creation option from photo-based custom stickers. You describe the image in text, and WhatsApp uses a Meta service to generate results. The documented flow can produce up to four stickers from one prompt; you can send a result or edit it before sending.
Availability limits
At the time of WhatsApp’s help-page documentation, AI-sticker prompts were supported in English, Indonesian, Portuguese, and Spanish. The feature was available only in limited countries and might not be available to every person in an eligible country. Availability, supported languages, and the interface are volatile, so an absent AI option does not necessarily indicate a problem with your account.

Use a clear description of the subject, expression, and style you want. AI output can vary from one prompt to another, so treat the generated image as a suggestion that may need editing rather than as a guaranteed exact result.
Troubleshooting common sticker problems
A downloaded pack is not visible
- Open the sticker tray and check My Stickers, not only the first row of pack icons.
- Confirm that the download completed while the device had a working connection.
- Update WhatsApp if the pack browser or custom-sticker controls are missing.
- On web or desktop, check the phone app as well; labels and synchronization timing can differ.
A sticker disappeared from Recents
Recents is a rolling list, not permanent storage. Removing an item from that list does not delete the sticker. Find it in Favorites or reopen its downloaded pack.
Search returns no useful stickers
- Try the emoji that best expresses the intended reaction instead of a long sentence.
- Use a simpler text term and check spelling.
- Browse the downloaded packs directly if the search depends on third-party results that are unavailable.
Custom or AI creation is unavailable
First update WhatsApp to the latest version supported by your device. Custom packs are documented for current Android and iOS releases, while AI stickers have additional country and language restrictions. If the feature still does not appear, it may not yet be enabled for your account or location.
