WebDAV extends HTTP so clients can work with remote files and their properties. In Windows, the WebDAV Redirector can present a WebDAV URL as a mapped network drive, but that drive remains a remote resource—not a local disk or a guarantee of SMB-equivalent behavior.
What WebDAV is
Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) adds methods, headers, and content types to HTTP for remote authoring and file management. Microsoft describes resource properties and locking as examples of functions it adds. Its specification overview calls WebDAV “a set of methods, headers, and content types that extend the HTTP 1.1 Protocol,” attributing the definition to Microsoft’s Open Specifications overview.
In practical terms, a WebDAV client sends requests to a server that supports the protocol. The server responds according to its implementation, configuration, and permissions. The protocol provides a way to access and manage remote content; it does not by itself make that content local or guarantee identical behavior across servers and applications.
How a Windows client accesses a WebDAV location
Windows’ WebDAV Redirector can expose a WebDAV URL through a mapped network drive. Microsoft documents mapping with the Map Network Drive wizard or the NET USE command. Mapping supplies a drive-letter interface for applications and users that access the location through Windows. The data still resides on a remote server and is exchanged over HTTP; the server handles requests and applies its own configuration and access controls. A mapped WebDAV location should not be treated as an offline synchronization feature or assumed to support every operation like a local disk.
What happens when files are browsed, read, or changed
The precise request sequence can vary with the server and application. Microsoft’s basic client-server example illustrates the general pattern: the client enumerates items at a known WebDAV URL, sends a PUT request to write file content, and uses GET to read content. These examples explain the exchange at a high level; they are not a promise that all Windows applications or servers use the same sequence for every action.

Because the exchange is remote, success depends on both sides: the client must be able to reach and authenticate to the endpoint, and the server must support the requested operation and allow it under its permissions and configuration.
Why mapping can fail
Microsoft lists several possible causes for WebDAV mapping problems. Treat an error as a clue rather than proof of a single cause, and check the client, endpoint, identity, permissions, and transport together.

- Client service or redirector: The WebClient service may not be running, or the WebDAV Redirector may not be installed.
- Server capability or URL: WebDAV may not be enabled on the server, or the URL may not identify the intended WebDAV resource.
- Credentials or permissions: Authentication can fail, or the authenticated account may not have permission to access the resource.
- Authentication over plain HTTP: Basic Authentication sends a username and password in clear text. Microsoft documents it as disabled by default for non-SSL WebDAV connections. Do not enable Basic Authentication over unencrypted HTTP; use a correctly configured HTTPS endpoint when credentials are involved. See Microsoft’s Basic Authentication guidance.
There is also a possible client-side authentication complication: Microsoft says the WebDAV Redirector uses WinHTTP, which, when no proxy is configured, sends user credentials only in response to requests to local intranet sites. That behavior can block access to a credential-protected web share in some configurations; it is one possible explanation, not a diagnosis for every authentication failure. A mapped drive letter is associated with a logon session. A service or process running under another security context cannot be assumed to see the same mapping. For the service scenario covered in Microsoft’s guidance, the recommended approach is to use a UNC path and ensure the process has the required privileges. This distinction matters when a drive works in File Explorer but an application, elevated process, or service cannot access that letter: the two processes may not share the same logon context or mapping.
