Wearable payments in India do not all use UPI. An eligible device may use NPCI’s UPI IoT pathway, a phone-based UPI Tap & Pay flow, or a separate contactless card-style system. An NFC chip in a smartwatch does not, by itself, prove that the watch supports UPI. Check the exact device, app, payment rail, authentication method, limits and merchant acceptance before relying on it.
Can I make UPI payments from my smartwatch?
Possibly, but the answer depends on what the watch and its companion service actually support. The current NPCI documentation describes UPI payments through linked Internet of Things devices and software, including examples such as smart glasses, connected cars, smart TVs and chatbots. It calls this an IoT pathway in which a primary UPI user delegates authorization to a secondary device or software with limits and risk controls.

That documentation does not establish that every NFC smartwatch can make UPI payments. A retail watch may instead perform a contactless transaction through a payment chip and antenna, using a card-style arrangement that is separate from UPI. Treat “NFC,” “contactless” and “UPI” as different descriptions until the bank, payment app or device maker explicitly connects them.
The three payment arrangements you may encounter
- UPI IoT or UPI Circle-style linking: a primary UPI account holder authorizes a secondary device or software. The device can initiate eligible transactions under published limits.
- UPI Tap & Pay: the user opens a UPI app on an NFC-capable device, enters an amount and taps that device on a merchant’s UPI Smart NFC QR or NFC tag.
- Contactless terminal payment: a wearable’s payment chip and antenna transmit payment details to a contactless-enabled terminal. The issuer may manage limits in its own app, and the payment is not necessarily UPI.
These arrangements can look identical at a checkout because each involves tapping hardware. Their account connection, authorization, limits and acceptance equipment are different.

How NPCI’s UPI IoT pathway works
NPCI’s IoT model is designed for payments from devices other than a conventional smartphone. A primary user remains the account holder and grants a secondary device or software permission to transact. The examples on NPCI’s page include buying through smart glasses, paying for streaming on a smart TV, paying for fuel or electric-vehicle charging from a connected car, and completing purchases through an AI chatbot.
NPCI says AI- or software-driven IoT payments are in a limited-user, closed-group pilot. Therefore, those examples demonstrate the category and the intended control model; they are not proof that a particular smartwatch or consumer app is generally available.
Registration flow
The documented enrollment starts in the IoT device’s app rather than at a payment terminal. The device app presents an option to enable UPI, and the user enters the mobile number associated with the primary UPI app. An OTP is sent to that phone for verification. NPCI also describes a QR code displayed in the device app; for journeys taking place inside a phone app, an intent-based flow can be used.
- Install or open the official app supplied for the supported IoT device.
- Choose the option to enable or register UPI for that device.
- Enter the mobile number used with the primary UPI application.
- Read the OTP delivered to that phone and enter it in the device-registration flow.
- Complete the QR-code or in-phone intent step shown by the app.
- Review the device’s permissions, transaction limits and account before making a payment.
The exact screens can vary by provider. If an app never identifies a UPI account, primary user, secondary device or equivalent authorization process, do not assume that its contactless feature is the NPCI IoT pathway.
Published NPCI limits for a linked secondary device
The NPCI IoT page accessed in 2026 lists the following controls. They apply per linked device or software, not as a promise that every wearable product will expose the same limits.
| Control | NPCI figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum per transaction | ₹5,000 per device | The ceiling shown for one transaction made through the linked device. |
| Monthly allowance | ₹15,000 per device | The cumulative monthly limit shown for that secondary device. |
| First 24 hours after linking | ₹2,000 | A lower allowance during the first 24 hours after a new device is linked. |
| Number of linked devices or software | Up to 5 | The maximum number of secondary devices or software entries listed by NPCI. |
Limits can change as NPCI or a participating provider updates its implementation. Check the live NPCI page and the provider’s terms immediately before setup, especially if you intend to use a wearable for recurring or higher-value payments.

Does UPI Tap & Pay work with a smartwatch?
NPCI’s Tap & Pay description is an app-led flow for NFC-capable mobiles and devices. The user opens a UPI app, selects Tap & Pay, enters the amount and taps the user’s device on the merchant’s UPI Smart NFC QR or NFC tag.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor amounts up to ₹500, NPCI describes a choice between UPI Lite, when enabled, and the bank-account UPI PIN. Larger amounts in that flow require the UPI PIN. Google Pay’s India instructions similarly require NFC to be switched on and an active UPI payment method. Its listed methods include a bank account, UPI Lite, a RuPay credit card and a credit line; it says a sufficient UPI Lite balance may be used for a transaction below ₹500.
Those instructions begin with opening the UPI app on the mobile device. They do not establish that a smartwatch can replace the phone, run the same app or present the same payment credentials. A watch will work with Tap & Pay only if its exact model, software and payment app have official support for that role. An NFC radio alone is not enough.
Do I need my phone to pay with a wearable?
For the documented NPCI IoT registration, the phone is involved at least during setup: the primary UPI mobile number is entered and an OTP is delivered to that phone. Whether the phone must remain nearby for every later transaction depends on the specific provider’s architecture and connectivity, which the general NPCI description does not guarantee.
For Tap & Pay, the published NPCI and Google instructions describe opening a UPI app on an NFC-capable mobile device. That is a phone-centered journey, so you should assume the phone or its app is required unless the provider publishes a separate watch workflow.

A contactless smartwatch can be designed to tap a terminal without an active phone connection at the moment of purchase. In that case, the watch stores or accesses payment credentials through its own chip and antenna. This is a statement about contactless hardware, not evidence that the transaction uses UPI.

What do I need to set up UPI on a wearable?
Confirm the payment rail first
Ask the provider to identify the feature as UPI IoT, UPI Circle, UPI Tap & Pay or contactless terminal payment. Product language that says only “NFC payments” leaves the rail unresolved. The rail determines which account is charged, how the user authenticates and what the merchant must support.
Check the exact device and software
- Verify the exact watch or wearable model, not merely the product family.
- Confirm that its operating software and companion app support the intended payment feature in India.
- Check whether the device is treated as a secondary UPI device, a phone-controlled NFC endpoint or a standalone contactless credential.
- Confirm whether the provider requires a paired phone, internet access, Bluetooth, a SIM or a particular app version.
Prepare the account and mobile number
For NPCI’s IoT enrollment, use the mobile number associated with the primary UPI app and keep that phone available for OTP verification. Make sure the underlying bank account or other supported payment method is active. For Tap & Pay, enable NFC on the supported mobile device and add an active payment method in the UPI app.
Understand authentication
NPCI’s general FAQ defines the UPI PIN as a four- to six-digit passcode created during first-time UPI app registration. The cited material does not define one universal wearable PIN, biometric gesture or button sequence. A provider may require the UPI PIN during setup or for a transaction, while another wearable may use device unlocking or issuer-specific controls. Read the exact instructions for your model rather than transferring assumptions from another watch.

Is an NFC smartwatch the same as a UPI smartwatch?
No. NFC is a short-range communication technology. It allows a device to exchange data when brought close to a compatible reader, but it does not identify the account network, wallet, card scheme or UPI service behind that exchange.
Airtel Payments Bank’s smartwatch page describes a payment-enabled chip and radio-frequency antenna. It says that tapping the band on a contactless-enabled terminal transfers details wirelessly for processing, and it describes managing contactless transaction limits through the Thanks app. The page does not identify those payments as UPI. It is therefore an example of a contactless payment wearable, not proof of a UPI smartwatch.
Similarly, a merchant terminal that accepts contactless cards may not accept UPI Tap & Pay. NPCI’s Tap & Pay flow calls for a UPI Smart NFC QR or NFC tag on the merchant side. The terminal, tag or QR label must support the same rail as the customer’s device.

How the options differ
| Option | Where the payment starts | Merchant acceptance | Authentication and limits | Availability described by the sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UPI IoT / linked secondary device | Supported IoT device app or linked device | Provider’s supported UPI journey | NPCI lists ₹5,000 per transaction, ₹15,000 per month, ₹2,000 in the first 24 hours and up to five linked devices | AI/software-driven examples are described as a limited-user closed-group pilot |
| UPI Tap & Pay | UPI app on an NFC-capable mobile device | Merchant UPI Smart NFC QR or NFC tag | Up to ₹500 may use UPI Lite when enabled; higher amounts require the UPI PIN in NPCI’s described flow | Published as a mobile-app flow; smartwatch support is not established by the cited instructions |
| Contactless smartwatch payment | Watch chip and antenna tapped on a contactless terminal | Contactless-enabled terminal | Issuer-specific limits managed in its app; the cited smartwatch page does not identify UPI authentication | Documented as contactless payment, not as UPI |
What happens when a payment fails?
The watch is not detected
Check that the wearable is powered, unlocked if required and positioned over the reader or NFC tag. Then verify that the merchant’s device supports the same payment rail. A contactless terminal may not read a UPI NFC tag, and a UPI tag may not process a card-style wearable credential.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The app cannot complete registration
Confirm that you entered the mobile number used by the primary UPI app, that the phone can receive the OTP and that the device is not already linked to the maximum permitted number of secondary devices. If the app shows a QR code or intent prompt, complete that step inside the official app rather than substituting a generic camera scan.
The transaction is declined
Check the applicable per-transaction, first-24-hour and monthly limits. For Tap & Pay, verify that NFC is enabled, the selected payment method is active and the merchant is presenting a UPI Smart NFC QR or tag. For any wearable, check account balance, device lock status and whether the provider has enabled the feature for your account or region.
The payment method is unclear
Stop and identify the rail before trying again. Ask the issuer whether the charge will appear as a UPI transaction, a card or wallet transaction, and which support channel handles disputes. Do not retry repeatedly if one attempt may already have been authorized; first check the app or bank transaction history.
Checklist before buying or relying on a wearable
- Find an official statement naming the payment rail.
- Confirm support for the exact model and Indian account or app.
- Ask whether the phone is required for setup, for each payment or only for account management.
- Record the per-transaction, daily or monthly limits and any new-device restriction.
- Identify the authentication action: UPI PIN, device unlock, biometric check or issuer-specific approval.
- Confirm the merchant equipment required, such as a UPI Smart NFC QR, NFC tag or contactless terminal.
- Check current rollout status; a pilot or closed group is not general availability.
- Test with a small amount and verify the resulting transaction type in the bank or payment app.
The practical rule is simple: buy for a named, supported payment flow rather than for NFC hardware alone. India’s documented UPI IoT model shows how a secondary device can be authorized, while Tap & Pay shows a phone-based NFC journey. A contactless smartwatch may be useful at compatible terminals, but it should be called a UPI wearable only when an official source confirms that rail.
