The same labels also guide employees stocking shelves and filling online orders. The light identifies a shelf location—it does not set the price or guarantee the item is physically there.
How Shop to Light works for shoppers

Walmart describes the feature as a way to make an item easier to find. A flashing label is a location cue, not confirmation that the product is currently in stock at that spot. Walmart’s explanation is in its Shop to Light announcement.
How employees use the same lights
Walmart describes three workflows that use the labels’ LEDs. They differ by who initiates the signal and what they are trying to find.

These uses build on the labels’ basic role as electronic shelf-edge displays. Walmart says the displays replace paper tags and can also help employees find shelf positions more efficiently. Its digital shelf label overview describes the associate workflows.
Do the labels change prices?
No: the flashing-light function and price-setting are separate. Walmart says its labels display prices approved through the company’s centralized pricing process, with associates reviewing approved changes; the labels themselves do not decide prices. In its October 2026 FAQ, Walmart says a Shop to Light request “simply tells the store system which product location to light up so the customer can find the item more easily.”

Walmart also said in March 2026 that prices are consistent for all customers in a given store, regardless of demand, time of day or who is shopping. That is the company’s description of its pricing policy. The same update said changes are typically made outside shopping hours; this describes Walmart’s stated process, not a guarantee that a shelf price can never change while a customer is in the store. What Walmart says about shopper privacy
Walmart says the labels are closed-system displays that do not collect customer information or track shoppers, and that they contain no cameras or microphones. Those are Walmart’s statements; the cited company pages do not provide an independent technical audit of the system.

Where Walmart has deployed the labels
In a March 2, 2026 update, Walmart said roughly 2,300 U.S. locations were already using digital shelf labels and forecast chain-wide deployment “within the next year.” That is a dated company-reported count and forecast, not confirmation that every store has since been equipped. Walmart’s October 2026 Shop to Light announcement explains the feature but does not give a final rollout count.
In 2024, Walmart had described a plan to reach 2,300 stores by 2026 and named Vusion Group as the label developer. The later March 2026 figure is the more recent status update. In the same 2024 account, associate Daniela Boscan said one price change that previously took two days to update took minutes with the system; that is her account of an example, not a measured result for every store or price change. What the light can—and cannot—tell you

It can: draw attention to a labeled shelf location associated with the requested item, or help an employee find a stocking or order-picking location.

It cannot establish: that the product is physically present, that the displayed price has changed, or that a shopper’s search time has been reduced by a particular amount. Walmart’s cited pages describe the feature but do not report an independent study of Shop to Light’s effect on search time or customer satisfaction.
