You can photograph an object, upload a screenshot, or select one item inside an existing image; the service analyzes the visible features and returns visually similar results or shopping information.
The result is a discovery lead, not proof of an exact model. Before buying, confirm the brand, model or SKU, dimensions, color, condition, seller, price and return terms in the listing. What happens to the image afterward depends on the service and its settings: Google’s documented controls differ from the information currently available for Pinterest.

What visual product search actually does
Traditional search begins with words such as “black leather backpack” or a model number. Visual product search reverses that order: the image is the query. The system processes the picture, identifies one or more visual subjects, and retrieves products or images that appear related.
That relationship can mean several different things:

- An apparent identification of a known product or product family.
- Visually similar items with comparable shape, color, pattern or materials.
- Shopping listings that may include price, retailer, reviews or availability.
- Objects that are not products at all, such as a landmark, plant or piece of text, depending on the service.
“Similar” does not mean “the same.” Two bags can share a silhouette while differing in leather grade, capacity, hardware, warranty or authenticity. Treat visual results as candidates to investigate, not as a verified identity.
How a visual search runs from photo to results

Take, upload or select an image
Google Lens documents searches from a camera view, a saved image or a screenshot. Pinterest Lens lets you search an image and select an object or region within a Pin. A screenshot is useful when the item appears in an app or video and you cannot copy its name.

Isolate the object that matters
If a picture contains several products, crop it or use the service’s object-selection tool. Selecting a single shoe, lamp or jacket reduces ambiguity from background objects. Crop away unrelated people, addresses, documents and screens before uploading; this is a privacy precaution, not a guarantee that no other information can be inferred.

Let the service process the visual features
The service analyzes the submitted pixels and produces a search representation. Public consumer documentation does not disclose one universal algorithm, every processing stage, a confidence score or a guaranteed accuracy rate. Different services can therefore return different candidates from the same photograph.

Review the first results
Look for the visual match, but also inspect the accompanying text. A result may identify a broad category, suggest a brand, or show a product listing that merely resembles the photographed item.

Refine with words or a new crop
Google Lens supports text refinements for attributes such as pattern, color and size. Pinterest documents refining similar-item results after selecting an object. Add a distinctive feature—“round brass buckle,” “striped cotton,” or a size—rather than repeating the entire description.
What Google Lens and Pinterest Lens can return
Google Lens shopping information
Google says Lens can show product details such as prices across retailers, current deals, reviews and places to buy when it recognizes a product. In an October 3, 2024 announcement, Google said the shopping experience was rolling out on Android and iOS in select countries, initially including categories such as toys, electronics and beauty. The feature page’s country list is the authority for current availability; rollout and results can change by country, account, app version and date.
Google also reported that Lens handled nearly 20 billion visual searches per month in 2024 and that 20 percent of those searches were shopping-related. The same announcement described a Shopping Graph containing more than 45 billion products. These are Google’s company-reported figures from 2024, not independent measurements or a guarantee that every country has the same inventory.
Pinterest Lens results
Pinterest’s visual-search help describes selecting an object in a Pin, finding similar items, refining the result and seeing shoppable items when available. Shopping details depend on the selected object and the Pin. A match may therefore have no buyable listing, may be unavailable in your region or may lead to a different seller than the one that supplied the original image. Camera and photo-library permissions are required for the documented Lens workflows.

A catalog-matching example for developers
Google Cloud Vision Product Search illustrates one way a visual commerce system can be built, but it is not a description of the proprietary architecture behind Google Lens or Pinterest Lens. A developer creates and indexes a product set, then submits a query image. The documented query can reference an image in Cloud Storage, a web URL or a base64-encoded image.

The service compares the query against that developer-supplied catalog. This explains why a retailer’s own visual search may recognize its inventory well while failing to identify an item that is absent from its product set. It also explains why the same photograph can produce different results in separate apps: each may have a different catalog, labeling scheme, ranking logic and freshness schedule.

For shoppers, the practical lesson is to ask whether a result comes from an open visual index, a retailer’s catalog or a marketplace feed. Catalog scope affects what can be found; it does not turn a visual resemblance into proof of identity.
What happens to images sent to Google
Visual Search History is off by default
Google Search Help says Visual Search History is off by default. If you enable it while signed in to an eligible Google service, images used for visual searches may be saved to Web & App Activity. Google says saved images may be used to improve the visual-search experience and related technologies, including model training.
Turning the setting off is not the same as deleting history
Disabling Visual Search History stops Google from saving new images as part of Web & App Activity, but visual search can continue to work. The control does not switch off Web & App Activity itself. Images saved previously may remain usable for improving visual-search technology until you remove them or Google no longer needs them for that purpose.
Review, download and deletion controls
Google documents controls for reviewing and deleting activity and for downloading saved images. It also notes that saved images can be deleted sooner than the retention period you selected when they are no longer needed for service improvement. The exact controls and eligibility can vary with account type, locale, app version and device.

When human review can occur
Images in Visual Search History are eligible for review by trained human reviewers when Visual Search History Donation is turned on. “Eligible” is conditional; it does not mean that every visual search image is reviewed. Keep this setting separate from the basic history switch when checking your account.

Pinterest’s Lens instructions establish the permissions and user actions needed to search: access to the camera or photo library, selection of an image or object, and refinement of similar-item results. The help pages do not establish a retention period for uploaded Lens images, whether those images are used to train models, whether people can review them, or how deletion works.
Do not apply Google’s Visual Search History statements to Pinterest. For a current answer about Pinterest storage or training, read Pinterest’s own privacy disclosures and account settings at the time you use the feature. A permission to access your camera or photo library is not, by itself, evidence of a particular retention period.
How to search more safely
- Crop first. Keep only the object needed for the search. Remove faces, house numbers, shipping labels, medical paperwork, account screens and other identifying details.
- Check the service and account. Confirm which app is receiving the image and whether you are signed in. Google account controls can affect whether a visual-search image enters Web & App Activity.
- Review history after sensitive searches. If you used Google’s Visual Search History, open the activity controls to inspect or delete saved entries. Turning the switch off alone does not erase earlier entries.
- Use a lower-risk substitute when possible. For a public product photo, download or crop only the product area rather than sending the original image containing unrelated people or documents.
- Read the service’s current privacy language. Policies and availability can change, and Pinterest’s documented Lens help does not answer the retention questions that Google’s help pages address.
How to verify a result before you buy
Use the visual result to build a shortlist, then switch to ordinary product research. Check the manufacturer’s name, exact model or SKU, dimensions, materials, colorway, included accessories and condition. Compare the seller’s photographs with the image you searched, and look for a retailer page that states stock, shipping, returns and warranty terms.

Pay particular attention to variants. A visual engine may find the same design in another size or color, a previous generation, a counterfeit listing or an accessory rather than the main product. Price differences can reflect condition, region, taxes, shipping or an incomplete bundle. Reviews can describe the listing being sold, but they do not authenticate an item solely because the thumbnail looks right.
Common failure modes and what to do
The result is a broad category
Use a tighter crop and add a text attribute such as material, pattern or approximate size. Remove the background if it dominates the frame.
Several objects are mixed together
Search each object separately. A table scene containing a phone, case and charger can cause the service to rank the wrong item.
The match looks right but the specifications do not
Stop treating it as an identification. Verify dimensions, model number and seller information on the listing or manufacturer’s documentation.
No shopping result appears
The item may not be indexed, may be out of stock, may not have a shoppable listing in your region or may be too visually generic. Try another angle, a cleaner crop or a descriptive text refinement.
Results differ between apps
That is expected when services use different catalogs, regional inventory and ranking systems. Compare the candidates and verify the underlying product details rather than selecting the result with the closest thumbnail.
The practical takeaway
Visual product search is a fast way to move from an unknown object to searchable candidates. Google Lens and Pinterest Lens both document image-based selection and refinement, while Google additionally documents shopping details and account-level visual-history controls. Similarity remains a clue, not authentication. Crop sensitive material before searching, inspect the relevant privacy settings, and confirm the exact product and seller independently before spending money.
