Veterans can seek mental health support without first enrolling in VA health care: VA lists medical centers and Vet Centers as starting points, though eligibility varies by service. For immediate crisis help, call 988 and select 1, text 838255, or use the Veterans Crisis Line online chat. Benefits questions and counseling are separate paths, so choose the one that matches what you need now.

Choose the right route for the help you need

Route Best fit What it provides Access and eligibility
Veterans Crisis Line A crisis now, or concern about a Veteran in crisis Immediate crisis support by phone, text, or chat VA describes it as private, free, and available 24/7.
VA medical center or VA mental health care Ongoing mental health care or emergency care at a VA facility Clinical care; enrolled Veterans can ask a primary care provider to arrange a mental health appointment Some mental health services are available without enrollment. Eligibility varies; confirm with VA.
Vet Center Community-based counseling and readjustment support Counseling, referrals, and help with benefits applications VA says enrollment and service connection are not required for Vet Center services, but eligibility for specific services applies.
COMPACT Act emergency suicide care Emergency treatment during a suicidal crisis Potential emergency treatment, transportation, and follow-up care at VA or non-VA facilities For eligible Veterans; VA must assess individual eligibility and coverage.
VA benefits hotline or recognized VSO Questions about disability benefits or help preparing a claim Benefits information, claims and paperwork assistance; VSOs may advocate or represent claimants Claim eligibility and outcome depend on the individual case.

How to find non-emergency counseling

If you already use VA health care

Ask your VA primary care provider to arrange a mental health appointment. VA’s mental health page says, “You don’t need to be enrolled in VA health care to get care,” referring to its listed access options; this does not mean every Veteran qualifies for every service.

If you are not enrolled

Contact a nearby VA medical center or Vet Center and explain what kind of help you are seeking. For help identifying care options, VA lists 877-222-8387. Check VA’s page for current phone hours and contact details.

What Vet Centers offer

Vet Centers are community-based, non-medical settings. Depending on eligibility, services can include individual and group counseling, couples and family counseling, military sexual trauma counseling, readjustment and bereavement counseling, substance-use assessment and referral, and help applying for VA benefits. Find a location through VA’s Vet Center locator.

What confidential means at a Vet Center

Privacy protections matter, but avoid assuming that every location uses identical wording or that confidentiality has no exceptions. The Mesa Vet Center says it does not share information without permission except in a life-threatening situation, and that its records cannot be accessed by other VA offices, DoD, military units, or community providers. That statement is specific to the Mesa center’s page; ask the Vet Center you contact how its privacy rules apply to your circumstances.

What to do in a crisis

Contact the Veterans Crisis Line

Call 988 and select 1, text 838255, or start an online chat. The line is for Veterans in crisis and people concerned about them; VA describes it as private, free, and open 24 hours a day, every day.

If immediate emergency care is needed

Call 911, go to the nearest emergency room, or go directly to a VA medical center. VA says discharge status or VA health care enrollment does not prevent emergency access at a VA medical center. Do not postpone urgent care while trying to determine benefits eligibility.

Possible COMPACT Act coverage

Under the COMPACT Act, an eligible Veteran in suicidal crisis may receive emergency suicide care at a VA or non-VA facility, regardless of VA health care enrollment. VA’s 2026 Health Care Benefits Overview describes coverage that may include treatment, transportation costs, and follow-up care, with up to 30 days of inpatient or residential care and up to 90 days of outpatient care. These are program limits described by VA, subject to eligibility and possible extension—not a guarantee that every person or episode will be covered. Contact VA to confirm an individual determination when it is safe to do so.

How to ask about disability benefits

VA says a Veteran may qualify for disability benefits for a mental health condition, including PTSD, that developed before, during, or after service. This general rule does not establish whether a particular claim will be approved. VA lists its benefits hotline, 800-827-1000, as open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET on the cited page.

A VA-recognized or congressionally chartered Veterans Service Organization (VSO) can help with claims and paperwork and may advocate or represent claimants. Vet Centers may also help eligible people with benefits applications and connections to VA or community support. A VSO can help navigate a claim, but cannot make the VA’s eligibility decision.

Will seeking care automatically affect a security clearance?

No. VA says that “being diagnosed with a mental health condition or seeking mental health care doesn’t automatically put work-related credentials, such as security clearances, at risk.” The key qualification is “doesn’t automatically”: this is not a guarantee about every employer, credential, or individual circumstance.
