How Venus’s Haze Compares With Earth’s Dust and Aerosols

Venus’s haze is like Earth’s aerosols in one important way: both are particles suspended in an atmosphere, where their size and makeup affect how they move and interact with light. But Venus’s main clouds are primarily sulfuric-acid droplets in a carbon-dioxide-rich atmosphere. Earth’s aerosols are a varied mix that includes mineral dust, sea spray, smoke, sulfates and other particles. Calling Venus’s main haze “dust” blurs that crucial difference.

Is the haze on Venus like dust on Earth?

Only in the broad physical sense. Aerosol is a category for small particles suspended in a gas, not a particular substance. NASA describes Earth aerosols as ranging from tens of nanometers to tens of micrometers in size; their composition and size help determine how they travel and affect radiation. Venus also has suspended particles, but its best-established cloud material is mainly sulfuric-acid droplets. Earth’s mineral dust is solid material lifted from dry ground. The useful comparison is therefore about particle behavior—such as mixing, settling and scattering—not an equivalence between Venus’s clouds and terrestrial dust.

What are Venus’s clouds made of?

Venus’s atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide, and its dense clouds are composed primarily of sulfuric acid, according to NASA. A 2018 planetary-atmosphere review describes the main cloud particles as micron-sized sulfuric-acid droplets formed through photochemistry, while noting that observations do not establish the composition and size profile of every particle at every altitude. The cloud layer is centered around 60 kilometers altitude and is roughly 20 kilometers deep, according to the European Space Agency. Its upper portion is mainly tiny sulfuric-acid droplets. Sulfur dioxide photodissociation contributes to the production of sulfuric-acid molecules and cloud aerosols.

The lower clouds are less certain. They contain larger particles, and some observations have prompted suggestions of solid or non-spherical material. Wind-blown dust or volcanic ejecta have been proposed as possible explanations for some particles, but neither is established as the makeup of the main cloud haze. Pioneer Venus particle-size measurements from 1979 remain the most comprehensive in-situ data described by the 2018 review.

What a 2025 reanalysis proposes

A September 2025 paper by Mogul and colleagues reanalyzed signals collected during the 1978 Pioneer Venus descent. The authors interpret the archived measurements as indicating aerosol material with roughly 20% ferric sulfate, 20% sulfuric acid and 60% water by weight. These are approximate values from a new interpretation of old probe data—not results from a new sampling mission or a settled consensus about all Venus clouds. Are Earth aerosols just dust?

No. Earth’s aerosol population includes both particles emitted directly into the air and particles formed later through atmospheric chemistry. NASA lists mineral dust, sea spray, smoke and volcanic ash among direct emissions; sulfate particles are an example of aerosols formed through chemical reactions. Mineral dust particles are often several micrometers across, and NASA Goddard estimates that about two billion metric tons of mineral dust are emitted globally each year. Earth’s sources and mixtures vary. NASA Earth Observatory says about 90% of Earth’s aerosols by mass have natural origins, citing sources such as volcanoes, fires and vegetation-related emissions; it presents this as a broad explanatory estimate, not a universal constant measured for every place and time. Human activities also contribute aerosols and their precursors. (NASA Earth Observatory)

How do the particles form, move and leave the atmosphere?

On Venus, sulfuric-acid cloud aerosols are linked to photochemical processes in the atmosphere. Earth’s particles come from a wider range of sources: dust and sea spray are lifted directly, smoke and ash are emitted, and some particles form when gases react. After formation or emission, particles on either planet can be mixed by atmospheric motion, collide and coagulate, or settle under gravity. Their behavior depends on particle properties and the atmosphere around them.

A 1978 comparative analysis of clouds on Earth, Venus, Mars and Jupiter found that Venus’s cloud layer most closely resembled terrestrial smog and haze in its vertical concentration pattern, which lacked sharp gradients. That comparison concerned how particles are distributed and the processes that shape clouds; it did not identify Venus’s cloud particles as Earth-style mineral dust. (Rossow, 1978)

How do aerosols affect climate and atmospheric energy?

Particles alter how radiation moves through an atmosphere, but their effects depend on what they are made of and how they interact with light. Bright particles such as many sulfates and nitrates tend to reflect sunlight. Black carbon absorbs sunlight and warms the layer containing it, while dust’s effect varies with its mineral composition and any coatings. Aerosols can also influence cloud droplets and cloud reflectivity. (NASA Earth Observatory)

NASA Earth Observatory estimates that aerosols and clouds seeded by them reflect about one quarter of incoming solar energy back to space. That is a broad description of their role in Earth’s energy balance, not a claim that every aerosol type has the same effect.

Venus’s cloud layer reflects about 80% of incoming solar radiation, ESA says; its account also assigns about 10% to atmospheric absorption and about 10% to energy reaching the surface. Those figures describe the planet’s incoming sunlight, not the full cause of Venus’s extreme surface heat. Cloud reflection and aerosol absorption affect radiation, while the dense atmosphere and greenhouse effect are also central to Venus’s heat balance. (European Space Agency)

Earth’s aerosols can also have large effects after major events. NASA Earth Observatory reports that Mount Pinatubo ejected more than 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide in 1991, reaching as high as 60 kilometers; the gas later formed sulfate aerosol. The same source says global temperatures dipped by about 0.6°C for about two years afterward. That figure describes the aftermath of the eruption, not the isolated effect of one measured parcel of aerosol. (NASA Earth Observatory)

Does Venus have dust in its clouds?

There may be solid particles in some lower-cloud regions, but the available evidence does not justify calling the principal Venusian haze dust. The main cloud material is generally described as sulfuric-acid droplets; the composition and origin of some larger lower-cloud particles remain unresolved. “Dust” is appropriate when referring specifically to solid mineral particles, or when clearly labeling a proposed explanation for uncertain particles—not as a synonym for Venus’s cloud system.
