A vapor chamber moves heat away from a phone’s hottest component by cycling a working fluid between liquid and vapor. Liquid near the heat source evaporates, vapor travels to cooler parts of the chamber, condensation releases heat, and a capillary structure returns the liquid to the hot zone. In a conventional phone, that spreader can remain flat. In a foldable phone, it must also bend repeatedly across the hinge without leaking, losing contact, or developing a high-resistance thermal bottleneck. The hinge therefore determines not only mechanical durability but also how effectively heat can reach the phone’s housing and the surrounding air.

What a vapor chamber does inside a phone

A vapor chamber is a sealed, flat heat spreader containing a working fluid and an internal capillary structure. It is attached thermally to a heat-generating component such as an application processor, graphics processor, modem or power-management circuitry. Its purpose is to distribute a concentrated hot spot over a larger area so the phone’s structure can reject heat more effectively.

1. Evaporation at the hot spot

Heat entering the chamber from the component causes nearby liquid to evaporate. The phase change absorbs a large amount of energy without requiring the chamber’s entire surface to reach the component’s peak temperature. This is why a chamber can move heat laterally more effectively than a solid metal plate of similar thickness.

2. Vapor movement to cooler regions

The vapor diffuses through the sealed cavity toward areas whose inner walls are cooler. Because the chamber is thin and covers a broad footprint, the vapor can spread heat across regions that are not directly above the processor. The chamber is therefore a heat-redistribution device, not a source of cooling by itself.

  • Expanded cooling area: Approximately 2.82x1.29 inches of extreme thermal conductivity cooling area, covering the CPU and battery module, protecting your phone from blackening or sudden shutdown.

3. Condensation and heat release

When vapor reaches a cooler wall, it condenses back into liquid and releases the heat it carried. That heat enters the chamber’s outer shell, attached frame, display assembly or other adjoining structures.

4. Capillary return

A porous or otherwise capillary structure draws the condensed liquid back toward the evaporator near the heat source. This return path allows the cycle to continue without a pump. The sequence—evaporation, vapor transport, condensation and capillary return—repeats as long as the component is producing heat and a temperature difference exists across the chamber.

Why the cycle reaches a limit

The chamber cannot move unlimited power. Its capacity depends on the amount and type of working fluid, the capillary structure, cavity geometry, contact quality and the ability of the surrounding phone to reject heat. If the condenser region cannot shed energy, temperatures rise throughout the device even though the chamber is functioning normally.

Heat still has to leave the phone

Spreading heat away from a processor is only the first stage. The heat must cross into the phone’s structural layers and then into the environment. In the foldable-device embodiment described in Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.’s 2025 patent (WO2025251585A1, published December 11, 2025), the spreader connects to multiple housings. Those housings provide surfaces through which heat can pass to the air. The patent also describes routes involving a middle frame and a flexible display assembly. These are disclosed embodiments, not proof that every commercial foldable phone uses the same stack.

In practical terms, a chamber can reduce a local peak while the phone’s exterior becomes warmer over a wider area. That broader, lower-temperature distribution is often preferable to a tiny area that becomes extremely hot, but it does not violate energy conservation: the same heat eventually leaves through the enclosure, display-side layers, frame, or other thermal interfaces.

Why a foldable chamber is harder to build

A slab in a rigid phone can be supported by flat layers and bonded over a predictable footprint. A foldable phone has two housings that rotate relative to each other. Any heat spreader spanning both halves must tolerate this motion while preserving a sealed fluid cavity and a low-resistance path across the moving region.

Repeated bending and fatigue

Huawei’s 2021 patent (WO2021104463A1, published June 3, 2021) frames repeated folding as a failure risk for conventional metal-shelled equalizing plates. Cyclic strain can fatigue a shell, create cracks, allow working fluid to escape and ultimately stop the phase-change cycle. The application proposes a foldable construction with sealing layers intended to reduce leakage. Those are proposed structures and problem statements in a patent; they are not independent lifecycle tests.

Different stiffness in different zones

The 2025 patent describes two relatively flat regions joined by a lower-stiffness bending region. Each flat region connects to one housing, while the softer region corresponds to the pivot and at least partly covers it. Concentrating flex in a designed zone prevents the entire chamber from buckling unpredictably and keeps the broad regions available for heat spreading.

Sealing while moving

A chamber must remain hermetically sealed as its layers flex. Seals, cover plates and edge joints have to accommodate strain without opening a leak path. A leak can lower the fluid inventory or alter internal pressure, reducing evaporation and condensation performance even if the outer phone still appears intact.

How hinge and pivot placement affect the thermal path

The pivot is where the relative motion is defined, so its location determines where the chamber must bend and how that bend is supported. Moving the flexible region closer to, or farther from, the mechanical pivot changes the strain distribution, available flat area and route to the housing.

Bending region aligned with the pivot

In the 2025 embodiment, the low-stiffness region corresponds to the pivot and partially covers it. This alignment gives the spreader a predictable folding line. The two flatter portions can remain comparatively rigid and maintain contact with their respective housings, while the flexible section absorbs the angular change.

Support on either side of the hinge

Flat chamber sections need backing from frame or display layers to avoid local deformation and loss of thermal contact. A hinge that leaves the spreader unsupported can create a mechanical hinge line that is also a thermal bottleneck. Conversely, excessive support or a very tight bend radius can transfer high strain into the chamber’s sealed shell.

Orientation and condensate return

An earlier hinge patent, WO2020000077A1 (published January 2, 2020), identifies a general constraint for fluid-based thermal paths: performance can depend on device orientation if condensate return is not managed adequately. Gravity may assist or oppose liquid movement, while the capillary structure must provide reliable return in either orientation. The same document notes that thermal resistance can rise if grease at contacting hinge surfaces is lost and the gap increases. That disclosure concerns a hinge arrangement in a foldable electronic device, not a confirmed implementation in a particular smartphone.

Design choices that trade heat spreading against mechanical endurance

Patent embodiments suggest several axes engineers must balance. They are design considerations, not a comparative product test.

Design area What it improves What can go wrong
Lower-stiffness bending region over the pivot Predictable folding and reduced strain in broad flat areas A long or very soft region may reduce the effective spreading area or add thermal resistance
Large flat regions on both housings More area for vapor condensation and housing heat rejection Large panels still need support so they do not wrinkle, buckle or lose contact
Flexible cover plates and sealed cavity Allows repeated motion while retaining the working fluid Fatigue or seal damage can cause leakage and loss of performance
Capillary structure spanning the fold Returns condensate to the evaporator without a pump Deformation, dry-out or orientation effects can interrupt liquid return
Direct thermal handoff to frame, housing or display layers Provides a route for heat to reach the environment Gaps, lost grease or poorly supported interfaces increase thermal resistance
Pivot location and bend radius Controls where strain occurs and how the two halves move A tight radius can accelerate fatigue; a misplaced bend can consume useful chamber area

What the cited patents do—and do not—prove

Patents are technical disclosures of proposed inventions. They can explain a mechanism, show a cross-section or define an arrangement, but publication does not establish that a specific phone ships with that structure. The three documents cited here support explanations of vapor-chamber operation, foldable construction, sealing and hinge-related constraints. They do not provide an independent teardown of a commercial model, a measured service life, or a standardized comparison between products.

The 2021 application states that its foldable vapor chamber “can meet the usage requirement of the electronic device for repeated folding of the vapor chamber, and has relatively high heat conduction performance.” That sentence describes the application’s own claimed capability; it is not a quotation from a named person and is not independent validation.

Interpreting the “10–20 times copper” figure

Huawei’s 2021 patent states that a temperature-equalizing plate can have an effective thermal conductivity 10–20 times that of pure copper. This is a claim made in the patent. The cited material does not establish the test conditions, geometry, power level, orientation, duration or whether the figure applies to every vapor chamber. It should therefore be read as a stated performance target or property for the disclosed plate, not as a universal specification for phones.

Common failure modes in a foldable thermal spreader

Leakage after fatigue

Cracks in a cover plate or seal can let working fluid escape. The chamber may then show a gradual loss of spreading capability rather than an immediate, visible failure. Designs address this with flexible layers, controlled bend zones and sealing structures, but the patents do not supply independent cycle-count results.

Thermal bottleneck at the hinge

If the bending section is too narrow, poorly supported or separated by a growing gap, heat may accumulate near the hinge even while both flat halves remain cool enough. Contact materials and hinge-surface grease matter because a lost interface material can increase the gap and thermal resistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Condensate starvation or orientation sensitivity

If liquid cannot return to the evaporator, part of the chamber may dry out. Capillary design helps, but the hinge’s orientation and deformation can still influence flow. A design intended to work in multiple phone orientations must preserve a return path without relying solely on gravity.

Loss of contact with adjoining layers

Repeated motion, assembly tolerances or local deformation can create air gaps between the chamber and frame, display or housing. Air is a poor conductor compared with the intended interface material, so even an intact chamber can deliver less heat to the exterior.

How to assess claims about a foldable phone’s cooling

  1. Separate the component from the system. Ask whether a claim describes a vapor chamber itself or the complete path from processor to outside air.
  2. Identify the moving zone. Look for the stated pivot, bend radius and lower-stiffness region rather than assuming the entire spreader flexes equally.
  3. Check the heat handoff. A chamber needs contact with frame, housing, display layers or another radiator; spreading alone does not lower the environment’s temperature.
  4. Look for evidence type. Distinguish a patent embodiment or manufacturer claim from a teardown, laboratory measurement or independently verified endurance test.
  5. Ask about orientation and interfaces. Reliable liquid return, stable seals and maintained contact across the hinge are as important as the chamber’s nominal conductivity.

Why hinge engineering matters beyond durability

The hinge sets the mechanical boundary conditions for the thermal spreader. It dictates where bending occurs, how much of the chamber can stay flat, which layers can support it and how heat crosses from one housing to the other. A hinge that survives many folds but leaves a high-resistance thermal break can still produce a hot region. A thermally excellent chamber that cannot tolerate cyclic strain is equally impractical. Successful designs must solve both problems at once: preserve a sealed phase-change cycle through repeated motion and provide a continuous route from the hot component to the phone’s external surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a vapor chamber make a phone cold?

No. It redistributes heat from a concentrated source and helps the housing reject that heat. The phone can feel warm over a larger area while avoiding a sharper local hotspot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are patent drawings proof that a shipping foldable phone uses that exact chamber?

No. The cited patents describe proposed embodiments. They do not independently confirm the internal construction of a particular commercial model.

Why can phone orientation affect a foldable heat spreader?

Condensed liquid must return to the evaporator. Capillary action can drive that return, but gravity, deformation and hinge geometry may alter the flow path if the design does not manage them adequately.
