In Vampire Survivors, a normal weapon evolution usually requires three things: the base weapon at its maximum level, the matching passive item at the level that recipe specifies, and a treasure chest capable of granting an evolution. A union is different: it combines two or more weapons into one result, and some unions also require a passive item.
The chest is the final trigger rather than the recipe itself. Under the general chest rule described by the community weapon references, an eligible chest can award an evolution or union once the run has reached 10 minutes and all requirements are satisfied. Weapon-specific and chest-specific exceptions mean that no single recipe rule works for every item.

Evolution and union: the distinction that matters
Players often use “evolve” as a general term for any upgraded weapon, but Vampire Survivors separates two mechanics.
What a weapon evolution does
A standard evolution replaces one base weapon with a stronger evolved form. The normal pattern is:

- One particular base weapon is required.
- That weapon must reach its specified maximum level.
- A matching passive item must be carried, often at a required level that is recipe-specific.
- An eligible treasure chest must be opened after the applicable time condition.
The passive item is part of the recipe, not merely a useful accessory. If the recipe calls for a passive at a particular level, owning it at a lower level is not enough.
What a union does
A union merges two or more weapons into one weapon. Because several weapon slots become one result, a successful union can create room for another weapon later in the run. Unions may require no passive item, or they may require one in addition to the component weapons. The exact requirement belongs to the individual recipe.

This distinction helps diagnose a failed upgrade. For an evolution, first verify the base weapon and passive. For a union, verify every component weapon as well as any extra passive condition.
The usual evolution process, step by step
Use this sequence when pursuing a conventional evolution. It is deliberately conservative because individual weapons can have special rules.
- Choose the target. Decide which evolved weapon you want and identify its exact base weapon and matching passive. The in-game Collection entry is the safest place to confirm a recipe you already have unlocked; community-maintained references can help with details, but they are not a guarantee that every current DLC or special recipe is represented.
- Acquire the base weapon. The base must be in your current inventory. A weapon that is merely available in the pool but has not been selected cannot evolve.
- Level the base weapon to its required maximum. The usual evolution rule requires the base weapon to be maxed. Do not assume that “nearly full” qualifies; the final weapon level matters.
- Carry the matching passive. Pick up the passive associated with the recipe. A different passive, even one that improves the base weapon, does not substitute for the matching item.
- Reach the passive’s required level. Some recipes use the passive at a specified level rather than at any level. Check that condition before hunting for a chest.
- Wait for a qualifying chest. The cited chest rule uses a 10-minute threshold for an eligible chest, provided the run also meets the recipe requirements. The threshold does not mean every chest in every situation will produce the upgrade.
- Open the chest. If the chest is eligible and the recipe is complete, the game can replace the base weapon with its evolved form. If it gives ordinary loot instead, continue checking the conditions instead of assuming the run is permanently broken.
How the 10-minute chest rule works
The commonly cited rule is that an evolution-capable chest can grant an evolution or union once the run is at least 10 minutes old and the required items are ready. This is a timing condition for the chest, not a promise that the next chest will always contain a specific upgrade.

Why the chest may not deliver the result
- The chest was opened before the applicable time threshold.
- The base weapon was not at maximum level.
- A required passive was missing or below its recipe-specific level.
- A union was missing one of its component weapons.
- The chest was not one of the chests that can award an evolution or union in that situation.
- The weapon has a special condition that differs from the ordinary pattern.
The chest reference also describes exceptions in which more than one weapon can be upgraded from a chest. Treat those as special behavior rather than as a rule that applies to every run. Do not discard a recipe because a chest behaved differently from the normal one-chest, one-upgrade expectation.
Confirmed standard evolution examples
These recipes illustrate the ordinary one-weapon-plus-passive pattern.

Whip and Hollow Heart
To pursue Bloody Tear, carry Whip and Hollow Heart, bring the base weapon to its required maximum, meet the passive-level requirement for the recipe, and then open an eligible chest after the timing condition. The passive is not optional: having Whip alone does not complete the recipe.
Magic Wand and Empty Tome
Holy Wand follows the same broad structure. Magic Wand is the base weapon and Empty Tome is the matching passive. Max the weapon, satisfy the passive requirement, and use a qualifying chest. This is an example of why a passive that is generally useful for a build is not necessarily interchangeable with the passive named by the recipe.
Confirmed union examples
Unions require you to maintain multiple weapons until the merge can occur. That makes their preparation different from a normal evolution.

Peachone and Ebony Wings to Vandalier
Vandalier is a union of Peachone and Ebony Wings. The key difference from Whip’s recipe is that you must carry both component weapons rather than one base weapon and one passive. Level and chest conditions still need to be checked for the specific implementation of the union.

Phiera Der Tuphello and Eight The Sparrow to Phieraggi
Phieraggi combines Phiera Der Tuphello and Eight The Sparrow, with Tirajisú also listed as required by the cited weapon reference. That means a run aiming for Phieraggi must reserve space for two component weapons plus the additional passive before the union is available. Verify the exact level conditions in the current Collection or reference entry, because the general evolution rule does not establish every union’s individual thresholds.
Planning your build around an upgrade
Upgrades are easier when you plan the inventory before the run becomes crowded.
Reserve the required slots
A normal evolution needs one weapon slot and one passive slot until the chest is opened. A union can need two or more weapon slots, and a union such as Phieraggi also needs the listed passive. Avoid filling those slots with substitutes that cannot satisfy the recipe.
Prioritize the base weapon’s final levels
If the base weapon is still missing several levels, a chest will not bypass that requirement. When the game offers a choice between improving the target weapon and taking an unrelated item, prioritize the target if the evolution is central to your plan. The official game listing’s own starting advice tells players to level weapons one at a time, which is consistent with concentrating experience on a weapon you intend to complete.

Do not overcommit to an unverified recipe
The examples above are supported recipes, not a complete list of every weapon, DLC item, or special condition. If a target is not shown in the Collection or a current reference, leave room to adapt. A run can be weakened by reserving several slots for a recipe that has an undisclosed requirement.

An evolution replaces the base weapon with its evolved form, so it normally leaves one weapon slot occupied. A union merges multiple weapons into one result, which can free one or more weapon slots after the merge. That space is strategically valuable: it can be used for another damage source, a defensive option, or a weapon needed for a later objective.
The timing matters. Before the chest is opened, all component weapons still occupy their slots. Plan around the pre-union inventory, not the inventory you expect to have afterward.
Troubleshooting a missing evolution or union
The chest gave ordinary loot
Check the clock first. The general cited rule uses 10 minutes, and an earlier chest may not be eligible. Then confirm that the chest itself can award an upgrade in that context. Chest behavior has exceptions, so one ordinary chest result is not proof that the recipe is invalid.

Confirm that the base weapon actually reached its maximum, not merely a high level. Next, check the matching passive and its required level. Finally, verify that you are pursuing an evolution rather than a union; unions need every named component weapon.
The passive is present but the recipe still fails
Presence alone may not be sufficient. Some recipes specify a passive level, and the general rule described above warns that requirements vary. Raise the passive to the level shown for that recipe, then try a qualifying chest again.
A union is missing
List the required weapons one by one. For Vandalier, both Peachone and Ebony Wings must be present. For Phieraggi, both Phiera Der Tuphello and Eight The Sparrow are required, and Tirajisú is also listed. A union cannot be completed by owning only one of its components.
The recipe is not in the examples here
Do not infer an unlisted recipe from a similar weapon. Check the in-game Collection entry or a current weapon reference for that specific item. Community references can change, and the examples in this guide are not an exhaustive current DLC chart.

- Write down the desired result and label it as an evolution or union.
- Record every required weapon, every passive, and each stated level condition.
- Reserve the necessary weapon and passive slots before selecting unrelated items.
- Track the base weapon and passive levels separately; a maxed weapon does not imply a maxed passive.
- Wait until the run has passed the applicable chest timing condition.
- Use a chest that is capable of granting the upgrade, remembering that special cases can alter normal chest behavior.
- If the upgrade does not appear, recheck the recipe before abandoning the run.
Limits of the general rule
“Max weapon plus passive plus chest” is a reliable starting model, not a universal formula. The required passive level can vary. Unions can require multiple weapons and an additional passive. Chests can have eligibility rules and exceptions, including cases where more than one weapon is upgraded. Weapon references also change as the game and downloadable content develop.
For that reason, treat Bloody Tear, Holy Wand, Vandalier, and Phieraggi as concrete examples rather than as a complete recipe database. When a build depends on a different weapon, confirm the current in-game requirement for that item instead of extrapolating from one of these examples.
Quick decision checklist
- One base weapon plus a matching passive? You are probably preparing a standard evolution.
- Two or more named weapons? You are preparing a union and must keep every component.
- Is the base weapon at maximum? If not, the usual evolution condition is incomplete.
- Is the passive at its recipe-specific level? Do not assume level one is enough.
- Has the run reached 10 minutes? That is the general threshold cited for an eligible evolution chest.
- Is the chest eligible? Chest exceptions mean that not every chest behaves identically.
- Is the recipe current? For unlisted or DLC weapons, verify the Collection entry or a current reference.
Bottom line
A normal evolution turns one fully leveled base weapon into its evolved form by using the matching passive and an eligible chest. A union instead combines multiple weapons, sometimes with an additional passive, and can free weapon slots after the merge. The safest routine is to identify the exact recipe, satisfy every level requirement, wait for the applicable chest condition, and treat exceptions as recipe-specific rather than assuming every weapon follows the same pattern.
