For the 2026 season, a team can reach VALORANT Champions Shanghai in one of two ways from its territory: finish in the top two of the territory’s Stage 2 playoffs or finish among that territory’s top two Championship Point earners. Four territories send four teams each, creating a 16-team field. At Champions, teams first play in four groups of four; the top two from each group reach an eight-team double-elimination playoff, where a second loss ends a team’s tournament.
What the 2026 Champions format is designed to do
Champions Shanghai is the culminating international event of the 2026 VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) season. Its qualification system combines a late-season tournament route with a season-long consistency route, while the event itself gives teams more than one chance in both the group stage and playoffs.

The 2026 event guide lists Champions Shanghai for September 24 through October 18, 2026. Those dates, as well as qualifying standings and completed team lists, are time-sensitive and can change as the season progresses. Riot’s event guide identifies 16 entrants, and the 2026 League Handbook defines how the four territories supply them.

How teams qualify for Valorant Champions in 2026
There are two qualification routes in every VCT territory. The official 2026 League Handbook states that “The top two teams from each territory’s Stage 2 Playoffs, as well as the top two Championship point earners from each territory participate in Champions Shanghai.” In practical terms, a team does not have to win the Stage 2 playoff to qualify if its accumulated Championship Points place it in the territory’s top two.

Route 1: top two in the territory’s Stage 2 playoffs
Stage 2 is the direct tournament route. The two highest-finishing teams in each territory’s Stage 2 playoffs receive Champions places. This route rewards teams that peak in the final domestic playoff of the season, regardless of whether they led the standings earlier in the year.
The wording is territory-specific: the top two in Americas qualify through the Americas Stage 2 playoffs, the top two in EMEA through EMEA’s bracket, and likewise for Pacific and China. A Stage 2 result in one territory does not transfer to another territory’s allocation.
Route 2: the top two Championship Point earners
Championship Points provide the season-long route. The handbook’s Stage 2 overview says teams earn one Championship Point for each regular-season match win, with additional points awarded according to playoff placement; the two highest point earners in each territory qualify for Champions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis means the points route values repeated results rather than a single knockout run. Winning regular-season matches builds the total, and a deep playoff finish can add placement points. The exact total for a team depends on the season’s results and the applicable handbook allocation.
How the four territories create 16 teams
| Territory | Stage 2 playoff qualifiers | Championship Point qualifiers | Total Champions places |
|---|---|---|---|
| Americas | Top 2 | Top 2 | 4 |
| EMEA | Top 2 | Top 2 | 4 |
| Pacific | Top 2 | Top 2 | 4 |
| China | Top 2 | Top 2 | 4 |
| Overall | 8 | 8 | 16 |
The allocation is therefore eight places through Stage 2 playoff placement and eight through Championship Points, assuming each territory fills its four listed places. The handbook overview cited for this format does not explain what happens if the same team qualifies through both routes, nor does the cited text provide a tie-break procedure for equal Championship Point totals. Those contingencies should not be inferred from the headline allocation; the applicable official competition rules would need to resolve them.

What Championship Points measure
Championship Points connect domestic performance across the season. They are not a separate international tournament and they are not the same thing as a Champions match win. They are a territory-level ranking mechanism used to identify two additional qualifiers.
Regular-season match wins
For Stage 2, the handbook specifies one Championship Point for each regular-season match win. The point is tied to a match victory, so a team’s Stage 2 regular-season record directly affects its position in the points race.

Teams also receive additional Championship Points based on playoff placement, with the handbook overview referring to points for the top four playoff finishers. A team can therefore increase its total through both regular-season wins and a high playoff finish.
Why the points route matters
- It rewards results accumulated over time instead of only the final playoff bracket.
- It gives a strong regular-season team a qualification path even if it falls short of the top two in Stage 2.
- It makes the final standings dependent on both match wins and placement bonuses.
- It requires checking the official territory standings rather than assuming the Stage 2 bracket alone determines every qualifier.
Because the cited overview does not publish a tie-break sequence or a duplicate-qualification reallocation rule, readers should treat unresolved ties or overlapping routes as rule-specific situations, not as automatic invitations for the next team in the table.
How the 16-team Champions group stage works
Champions begins with four GSL groups, each containing four teams. This is not a single-loss knockout: a team is not eliminated merely because it loses its opening match.

Four groups of four
The 16 qualified teams are divided into four groups. Every match in the group stage is a best-of-three series. The group format continues until the qualifying and elimination threshold is reached, with the top two teams from each group moving on.

Two teams advance from each group
Eight teams survive the group stage: two from Group A, two from Group B, two from Group C and two from Group D. The other eight teams do not enter the playoff bracket.
What “two losses” means
Riot’s event guide summarizes the event’s group-stage threshold as losing twice means elimination. In a GSL-style group, that makes the opening loss survivable but the second loss decisive. Conversely, teams that reach the advancement threshold remain alive and proceed to the playoff draw or bracket specified for the event.
Because each group contains four teams and the matches are best-of-three, a single map loss is not the same as a series loss. The elimination language applies to match results, while the best-of-three format determines the winner of each individual series.
How Champions playoffs eliminate teams
The eight group-stage survivors enter a double-elimination playoff. The key rule is simple: one playoff loss does not end a team’s run; two playoff losses do.

Upper bracket: the first chance
A team begins in the upper bracket. Winning keeps it on the upper-bracket route toward the final. Losing once sends it to the lower bracket instead of immediately eliminating it.
Lower bracket: the last chance
The lower bracket is the recovery path after a first loss. A team must continue winning there because another defeat is its second playoff loss and eliminates it. This structure lets an upper-bracket loss be overcome, but it does not provide unlimited attempts.
Match lengths
| Playoff match type | Series format | Effect of a loss |
|---|---|---|
| Most playoff matches | Best-of-three | One playoff loss; the team either remains in the upper bracket or drops to the lower bracket according to its position |
| Lower final | Best-of-five | Second playoff loss eliminates the loser |
| Grand final | Best-of-five | The losing finalist finishes second; the winner is champion |
The lower final and grand final are best-of-five series, while the other playoff matches are best-of-three under the 2026 handbook format. A map-level defeat inside a series does not itself count as a tournament elimination; the team must lose the series.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many losses eliminate a team?
The answer depends on the stage. In the group stage, the event guide’s two-loss summary means a second group-stage match loss eliminates a team. In the playoffs, the double-elimination bracket also permits one loss, and a second playoff loss eliminates the team.
| Stage | Can one match loss be survived? | Elimination point |
|---|---|---|
| GSL group stage | Yes | Second group-stage match loss |
| Upper-bracket playoff match | Yes | The team drops to the lower bracket after its first loss; another playoff loss eliminates it |
| Lower-bracket playoff match | No, if the team already lost once | That second playoff loss |
| Grand final | No further bracket recovery | Loss ends the title run and awards the championship to the opponent |
Always count series losses, not individual map losses. A 2–1 best-of-three defeat is one match loss, just as a 2–0 defeat is one match loss.

A step-by-step path from a domestic season to the trophy
- Compete in a VCT territory. The relevant territory is Americas, EMEA, Pacific or China.
- Build Championship Points. Win regular-season matches and earn any placement points awarded for the territory’s playoffs.
- Play Stage 2. Finish in the top two of the territory’s Stage 2 playoffs, or remain in the top two of the territory’s Championship Point table.
- Enter the 16-team Champions field. Four teams from each territory make up the international event.
- Survive the group stage. In a four-team GSL group, avoid the second match loss and finish among the two teams that advance.
- Navigate the playoff bracket. Win from the upper bracket, or recover in the lower bracket after one loss.
- Win the deciding series. The lower final and grand final are best-of-five; a second playoff loss ends a team’s run, and the grand-final winner becomes Champions.
Common misunderstandings and how to check them
“Only the Stage 2 winner qualifies.”
Incorrect. The top two Stage 2 playoff finishers qualify, and two more teams qualify through Championship Points in each territory.
“Championship Points are based only on playoff placement.”
Incorrect. The Stage 2 overview includes one point for each regular-season match win plus additional placement points for the top four playoff finishers.
“One loss at Champions means elimination.”
Incorrect. The group stage uses a GSL format, and the playoffs are double-elimination. A first loss can be survived, although the second loss in the relevant stage ends the run.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“A map loss is a tournament loss.”
Incorrect. Series are best-of-three except for the lower final and grand final, which are best-of-five. Elimination is determined by losing the match series, not by dropping one map.
“The format is the same every year.”
Do not assume that. The rules described here are for the 2026 season. Future Champions editions can change their qualification routes, group structure, bracket, match lengths or point allocations.
What is still not specified in the published overview
The cited 2026 handbook passages establish the two qualification routes and the Championship Point framework, but they do not state how a duplicate qualifier is replaced when one team appears to qualify through both routes. They also do not provide, in the cited text, the tie-break order for teams finishing level on Championship Points.
That limitation matters when reading a live table. A point total that appears to place a team in the top two is not, by itself, a complete answer if another team is tied or if a team has already secured a Stage 2 playoff place. The official competition rules or a later clarification would control those cases. No automatic reallocation should be assumed without that rule.

Bottom line for the 2026 season
To reach Champions Shanghai, a team needs either a top-two finish in its territory’s Stage 2 playoffs or a top-two Championship Point total; each of the four territories supplies four teams. At the event, 16 teams become eight through four GSL groups, and the eight survivors enter a double-elimination playoff. A second match loss eliminates a team in the group-stage threshold described by Riot’s guide and in the playoff bracket, while the lower final and grand final are best-of-five series. The qualification and elimination rules are specifically the 2026 format, not a permanent definition of Champions.
