Bytes issue 252, published January 8, 2024, was a tour of several performance changes across the browser stack—not a single V8 upgrade. V8 added a middle JavaScript compilation tier with Maglev and began moving TurboFan’s backend work to Turboshaft; Blink improved HTML parsing; and V8 shipped WebAssembly Garbage Collection (WasmGC). The distinctions matter: faster compilation, faster benchmark scores and support for managed WebAssembly programs describe different outcomes.

The newsletter’s “V8 revs up” feature described how browsers handle code: JavaScript engines parse, compile and execute it, while the browser’s rendering engine processes HTML and builds the page. The issue grouped changes from both parts of that stack alongside a WebAssembly capability implemented by V8.

V8 uses multiple compilation tiers to balance the time spent compiling with the quality of the resulting machine code. Sparkplug is its baseline compiler, while TurboFan is its top-tier optimizing compiler. Maglev adds a mid-tier between them: it can produce more optimized code than the baseline without requiring every function to wait for TurboFan’s more costly optimization work.

V8’s December 2023 year-end account reported Maglev improvements of 8.2% on JetStream and 6% on Speedometer. V8 also reported 10% lower overall V8 energy consumption during Speedometer runs, attributing that result to faster compilation and less reliance on TurboFan. These are V8’s benchmark results, not predicted gains for arbitrary applications. In a separate Maglev explainer, V8 specified that its benchmarks were measured with Chrome 117.0.5897.3 on a 13-inch M2 MacBook Air; results can vary with workload, browser and hardware.
What Turboshaft changes—and what it does not
Turboshaft is a new internal architecture for V8’s top-tier optimizing compiler, TurboFan. Its purpose is to make compiler work easier to extend with optimizations and faster to compile. V8 reported that, starting with Chrome 120, CPU-agnostic backend phases use Turboshaft rather than TurboFan’s previous backend phases, with those phases compiling about twice as fast.

That “twice as fast” figure is about compilation of those compiler phases. It does not mean JavaScript programs execute twice as fast. Compiler infrastructure can affect development and optimization costs without translating directly into the same-size change in application runtime.

Why the HTML parser result belongs to Blink
The faster HTML parser discussed in the issue is Blink work. Blink is Chromium’s rendering engine, not V8, which is the JavaScript and WebAssembly engine. The distinction is useful because a browser can get faster through changes to different components, even when a newsletter presents them together as improvements to web performance.

V8’s 2023 account said the parser work raised Speedometer scores by 3.4% and that WebKit integrated the changes. This is a reported benchmark result, not evidence that every page loads 3.4% faster in every browser or on every device.
What WebAssembly Garbage Collection enables
WebAssembly Garbage Collection, or WasmGC, gives WebAssembly programs managed object and array types that can be collected by a garbage collector. That makes it possible for languages with garbage-collected data models to target WebAssembly without relying on exactly the same approach as compiling an entire language runtime to the earlier WebAssembly MVP baseline.

V8 said WasmGC supports languages including Java, Kotlin, Dart, Python and C#. Its December 2023 account said applications in this category typically run about twice as fast as when compiled to JavaScript. Treat that as V8’s qualified project claim, not a universal performance guarantee: outcomes depend on the language, application, compilation strategy and workload.

V8’s technical account distinguishes two broad approaches. A compiler can map a language’s managed constructs to WebAssembly’s GC instructions, or it can compile an existing language runtime to WebAssembly MVP. Those approaches have different speed and code-size tradeoffs; WasmGC provides a path for using managed data structures directly in WebAssembly.

How to read the performance figures
V8’s year-end account also reported 14% JetStream and 34% Speedometer overall performance growth for V8’s 2023 work. Those totals cover many changes, so they should not be assigned to Maglev, Turboshaft, the HTML parser or WasmGC individually.
