For a normal payment, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) states a ceiling of ₹1 lakh per transaction. Higher ceilings apply to specific categories—up to ₹2 lakh for some capital-market, collection, insurance and foreign-inward-remittance payments; up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments; and, under an August 2025 NPCI circular, up to ₹5 lakh for tax-payment-aligned transactions to eligible “Verified Merchant” businesses. Your bank can set a lower internal cap, and daily amount limits, transaction-count limits, merchant eligibility, available credit and security controls can still prevent a payment. The practical limit is therefore the lowest applicable restriction, not simply the largest NPCI ceiling.
What determines the amount you can send
Every UPI payment passes through several limits at once. NPCI defines the network ceiling for the payment category. Your linked bank or card issuer may impose a lower cap. The transaction type and the merchant’s classification determine whether a higher category ceiling is available. Finally, your account may have reached a daily amount or transaction-count allowance, or may be temporarily restricted after failed authentication.

That is why two people using different banks can see different permitted amounts in similar-looking UPI screens, and why the same person may be able to send a large amount to one merchant but not to another. An app is the interface and payer-side service provider; it does not automatically grant the maximum permitted by NPCI.
NPCI’s published per-transaction ceilings
NPCI’s UPI FAQ (current page retrieved in 2026) gives these network-level ceilings. They are per transaction, not promises that every account, app or bank will allow the full amount.

| Payment category | NPCI ceiling cited | Conditions and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Normal UPI payments, including ordinary person-to-person transfers | ₹1 lakh per transaction | NPCI’s stated general ceiling; a bank may set a lower internal limit. |
| Capital markets, collections, insurance and foreign inward remittances | Up to ₹2 lakh per transaction | Available only when the payment is correctly identified as one of the specified categories and supported by the participating institutions. |
| IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction | Applies to those schemes and their eligible payment flows, not to ordinary UPI transfers. |
| Tax-payment-aligned transactions | ₹5 lakh per transaction under NPCI circular NPCI/UPI/2025-26/OC/185B, dated 28 August 2025 | The circular says the enhanced limit applies to merchants categorised as “Verified Merchant.” Acquiring banks must support the compliant merchant setup. |
“Up to” is important. A ₹5 lakh NPCI ceiling for an eligible category does not mean every UPI app or bank account will let you send ₹5 lakh. The merchant and bank must support the relevant limit, and account-level restrictions may still apply.
Why your bank can show a lower limit
NPCI sets an outer boundary, while member banks manage their own risk controls. NPCI’s 28 August 2025 circular expressly says: “Member banks may continue to be provided the discretion to set their internal limits based on their internal policy, within the overall ceilings prescribed by NPCI.” In practice, a bank can choose a lower per-transaction amount, a lower daily total, a lower transaction count, or additional controls for a particular account type.
The bank’s decision can depend on its fraud model, customer profile, account status, channel configuration and the payment category. A limit displayed in your banking app may therefore differ from a limit shown in a third-party UPI app linked to the same account. If a bank’s internal cap is ₹50,000, you cannot use another app to turn that account into a ₹1 lakh transaction account.

Bank, issuer and acquiring-bank roles
- Issuing or remitting bank: controls the account from which money leaves and can reject a payment above its internal cap or remaining allowance.
- Acquiring bank: serves the merchant and must correctly configure category and verified-merchant status for enhanced limits.
- App and payer-side PSP: presents the payment flow and routes the request. It cannot override a bank’s or NPCI’s ceiling.
- Issuer for a credit-linked payment: controls available credit and permitted transaction categories in addition to UPI rules.
How payment type changes the ceiling
Person-to-person transfers
Ordinary transfers to another individual generally fall under NPCI’s normal ₹1 lakh per-transaction ceiling, subject to the sending bank’s lower limit. The 2025 tax-payment circular did not raise the person-to-person ceiling; it says the P2P per-transaction limit continues under existing guidelines. Splitting one intended transfer into multiple P2P payments may still run into daily amount or transaction-count controls and can trigger fraud monitoring.
Merchant payments
A merchant payment is not automatically eligible for a higher limit. The payment must be mapped to the relevant category, and the merchant’s setup must satisfy the applicable requirements. For tax-payment-aligned payments, NPCI’s circular states: “The enhanced limits shall be applicable for merchants which are categorised as ‘Verified Merchant’.” A checkout that looks like a tax payment but is not recognised in the required category may be processed under a lower ceiling.
Capital markets, collections, insurance and remittances
NPCI’s FAQ lists a ceiling of up to ₹2 lakh for these specified categories. The category label is operational, not merely descriptive: the participating institution and payment request must identify the transaction correctly. A normal transfer to an individual involved in one of these activities does not become a ₹2 lakh category payment simply because the recipient works in that sector.

IPO and Retail Direct Scheme
NPCI’s FAQ lists up to ₹5 lakh per transaction for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments. This is a scheme-specific ceiling. It should not be treated as a general UPI allowance for shopping, rent, tuition or P2P transfers.

The 28 August 2025 circular raised the NPCI ceiling to ₹5 lakh for entities in categories aligned to tax payments, with the enhanced limit tied to verified-merchant classification. The circular directs acquiring banks to ensure the higher limit for compliant merchants while preserving member-bank discretion to set lower internal limits. Before relying on the figure, check that the payment flow and merchant meet those conditions and that no later NPCI amendment has changed them.
Per-transaction, daily and count limits are different
A per-transaction ceiling answers “How much can this single payment be?” It does not answer how much you can send over a day or how many UPI payments you may make. Banks can maintain separate daily amount and daily count allowances, and those values can vary by account and risk setting.

| Restriction | What it controls | Typical result when reached |
|---|---|---|
| Per-transaction ceiling | Maximum value of one payment | The individual payment is rejected or the app prevents submission. |
| Daily amount allowance | Total value sent during the bank’s defined period | A smaller payment may fail after earlier transfers have used the allowance. |
| Daily transaction count | Number of UPI payments in the period | A low-value payment can fail even when the amount is below the per-transaction cap. |
| Security or authentication block | Whether the account is currently allowed to send | Sending is temporarily disabled, often after repeated incorrect UPI PIN entries. |
NPCI ecosystem reporting lists exceeding per-transaction, daily amount or daily count limits among reasons transactions fail. A decline therefore does not prove that the requested amount exceeded the headline ₹1 lakh figure.

NPCI says RuPay Credit Card on UPI follows standard UPI transaction limits. That standard does not replace the card issuer’s controls. The payment must fit the available credit limit and any transaction-category restrictions imposed by the issuer or applicable rules.
Recommended Free Tools
Available credit is not the same as the UPI ceiling. For example, a card may have more than ₹1 lakh of unused credit, but an ordinary UPI category can still be limited to ₹1 lakh or less, while the issuer may impose a lower amount. Conversely, a category ceiling does not create credit that is unavailable on the card. Check both values before authorising a large payment.

How to find your actual limit before paying
- Identify the payment type. Decide whether it is P2P, an ordinary merchant purchase, an IPO, Retail Direct Scheme, insurance, collection, capital-market, remittance or tax payment.
- Confirm the recipient classification. For enhanced merchant ceilings, verify that the checkout or biller is presented as the relevant category and, for tax payments, that the merchant is recognised as a “Verified Merchant” where the flow indicates this.
- Open the linked bank’s UPI settings. In your bank or payment app, look for labels such as UPI settings, bank account, transaction limit, daily limit, send-money limit or manage accounts. Labels differ by provider.
- Check remaining allowance. Review any daily amount or transaction-count indicator, and account for transfers already made during the bank’s applicable period.
- Check card availability if using credit. Confirm available RuPay credit and issuer restrictions separately from the UPI amount.
- Use the bank’s support channel for an account-specific answer. Ask for the current per-transaction amount, daily amount, daily count and category eligibility for the exact linked account. A generic app help page may describe NPCI ceilings rather than your configured limits.
- Make a smaller test only when appropriate. For a time-sensitive or high-value payment, do not assume that a failed small test proves a larger payment will work; a test can consume a count allowance or trigger security review.
What to do when a payment fails
“Limit exceeded” or amount-related decline
- Compare the requested amount with the bank’s per-transaction cap, not just NPCI’s ceiling.
- Check whether earlier payments consumed the daily amount allowance.
- Confirm that the transaction is in the category you expected and that a higher category limit is actually supported.
- For a merchant tax payment, ask the merchant or bank whether its verified-merchant configuration is active.
- Do not repeatedly split payments without checking daily count and fraud controls.
Payment fails below the stated ceiling
A below-ceiling failure can result from a daily count limit, daily amount already used, insufficient account balance, beneficiary or merchant restrictions, technical downtime, or a bank-specific risk decision. NPCI’s published ceiling is not a guarantee of authorisation for every request.
UPI PIN or temporary block
NPCI says repeated incorrect UPI PIN entries may cause a temporary block on sending money, and the duration or handling varies by bank. Stop retrying guesses. Follow the bank’s unblock or PIN-reset process, wait for the stated lock period, and contact the bank if the account remains restricted. This is a security control, not a higher or lower transaction category.
How app differences should be interpreted
There is no current official cross-provider table establishing one universal daily limit for each UPI app. Apps may display different defaults, validation messages or account-specific values because they are connected to different banks, PSP arrangements and risk systems. The same app can also show different limits for two users whose linked banks differ.

Use an app’s displayed amount as an indication for the selected account and payment flow, not as a nationwide rule. The authoritative answer for your transaction is the combination of the app’s current screen, the linked bank’s policy and the category rules applied to the recipient. If those sources disagree, ask the bank before sending.
Before relying on a large UPI payment
- Confirm the amount is below the applicable NPCI category ceiling.
- Confirm your bank’s internal per-transaction limit and remaining daily allowance.
- Check daily transaction count, not only total rupees.
- Verify the merchant category and, where relevant, verified-merchant status.
- For IPO or Retail Direct Scheme payments, use the designated scheme flow.
- For RuPay Credit Card on UPI, check available credit and issuer category restrictions.
- Keep an alternative bank transfer method available for a deadline-sensitive payment.
- Review NPCI’s latest FAQ and circular index close to the payment date, because policy circulars can amend ceilings after the figures cited here.
The practical rule
Start with the NPCI ceiling, then apply the transaction category, merchant status, bank or issuer cap, remaining daily allowance and account security state. The smallest applicable limit controls. For ordinary UPI, that usually means treating ₹1 lakh as the network maximum per transaction—not as a guaranteed amount—and confirming the exact permitted value with your linked bank before attempting a larger payment.
