A university game-development program is not a single type of degree. It may be a game-development concentration inside a computer science degree, an interdisciplinary bachelor’s program that combines computing with design and production, a dedicated game-development B.S., or a two-year applied associate degree. The reliable way to compare options is to read the required course list, project sequence, degree level and accreditation for the exact catalog year—not to judge by the major’s name.
What “game development” can mean at a university
Universities use game-development language for programs with very different academic scopes. Four structures appear in the official examples:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Structure | What you earn | Typical curriculum shape | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game-development concentration | Computer science B.S. | A broad computer science core remains required, while selected courses and electives focus on games. | Which CS courses are mandatory, how many game courses are required, and whether the concentration changes the degree title. |
| Interdisciplinary game-design degree | Usually a B.S. | Computing and engineering foundations are combined with visual communication, design, production, game studies and collaborative studio work. | The balance between technical requirements, creative courses and team projects. |
| Dedicated game-development degree | Game-focused B.S. | The program is organized around interactive media, game technology, human-computer interaction and practical labs. | How much mathematics, algorithms, systems and software engineering are required compared with a conventional CS degree. |
| Applied game-design and development program | Often an A.A.S. | A shorter, hands-on sequence integrates programming with game-engine work and art or multimedia courses. | Transfer options, degree level, total credits and whether the program is intended for direct entry or further study. |
These categories overlap. A “game” label does not tell you whether you will study operating systems, theory of computation, advanced mathematics or software architecture. Conversely, a computer science degree with a game-development concentration may include substantial design and studio work. Compare the actual degree audit and catalog for the year in which you will enroll.

Computer science degree with a game-development concentration
In a concentration model, game study is layered onto a general computer science degree. North Carolina State University describes its Game Development Concentration as focusing on game technologies while retaining the breadth and depth of its general CS B.S. Its described foundation includes programming languages, data structures, software engineering, systems, theory of computation, secure software, teamwork, communication, and social and ethical dimensions.

Cal Poly’s Computer Science B.S. offers a Game Development concentration while listing general CS requirements and game-specific courses. Its catalog examples include Game Design and Development, Game Engineering and Critical Analysis, Video Games and Society, and a senior project or research option. CS electives can include graphics, rendering, animation, user-interface design and human-computer interaction. The sample flowchart totals 120 units; it is a planning example, not a promise that every student follows that exact sequence.
Interdisciplinary technical-and-creative degree
UC Santa Cruz’s Computer Science: Computer Game Design B.S. is built as an interdisciplinary degree. The 2022–23 catalog describes strong computer science and computer engineering foundations alongside mathematics, visual communication, game history and systems, social and ethical issues, and team-oriented production. Upper-division choices include Game AI, Game Graphics and Real-Time Rendering, Generative Design and Interactive Storytelling.
The program’s stated learning outcomes show the intended blend: students should be able to use algorithms, data structures, complexity and software engineering, while also building a technical system to achieve an artistic goal for an audience. One catalog outcome puts that expectation precisely: “Design and build a technical system that achieves an artistic goal for audience experience, employing sound computer science techniques.”
Dedicated game-development B.S.
Lamar University’s 2026–27 Computer Game Development plan is a dedicated B.S. focused on interactive digital-media technologies, human-computer interaction and hands-on labs. The university says the curriculum prepares students for areas including graphic visualization, game development and computer modeling, with on-campus and online availability. Because Lamar warns that plans may change during a student’s four years, students should use the current degree audit and an advisor rather than treating a published plan as a permanent contract.
Applied associate degree
Arapahoe Community College’s Game Design and Development A.A.S. is a two-year, 60-credit applied program. It groups courses into general computer science, game-development classes that apply programming through a game engine, and art and multimedia work intended for multidisciplinary teams. Its outcomes include applying game-design concepts, understanding programming-language syntax and creating a complete game.

An A.A.S. is not equivalent in level or scope to a four-year bachelor’s degree. It can be a direct-to-work credential or a starting point for transfer, but those outcomes depend on the institution and the student’s plan. Confirm which credits transfer before enrolling.
Game-specific subjects you may study
Once the computing core is clear, examine the game portion of the curriculum. A game-development program may emphasize several distinct areas:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Game engineering: real-time programming, engine architecture, performance, tools and the integration of code with assets.
- Graphics and rendering: computer graphics, animation pipelines, rendering techniques and visual simulation.
- Design and interaction: rules, systems, level design, user experience, interface design and play-testing.
- Story and communication: interactive storytelling, visual communication, narrative structures and audience experience.
- Production: planning, versioned work, collaboration, scheduling, critique and delivering a playable build.
- Games and society: history, culture, social effects, ethics and critical analysis.
- Art and multimedia: modeling, sound, animation or other asset disciplines, particularly in applied and interdisciplinary programs.
Course titles alone can mislead. “Graphics” might be a required mathematical computer-graphics course or an elective studio; “game design” might be a single survey or part of a multi-term production sequence. Download the syllabus or ask the department which courses are required, which are electives and what prerequisites they have.
Projects, studios and capstones are major differences
Project requirements often reveal more about a program than its title. Ask whether projects are individual or team-based, how many are required, whether students complete a playable game, and whether a capstone occupies one term or a full year.
UCSC’s staged production model
UCSC describes a two-course interdisciplinary Game Development Experience followed by a yearlong Game Design Studio. That sequence connects technical engineering with artistic and production goals and requires collaborative planning and execution of complex projects.

Cal Poly’s project option
Cal Poly lists a senior project or research option in its Game Development concentration. Because the catalog presents options rather than one universal project format, prospective students should ask whether the game path requires a production project, permits research instead, or has separate section rules.
Arapahoe’s complete-game outcome
Arapahoe states that students should create a complete game. In a two-year applied program, that outcome can provide concentrated portfolio practice, but it does not imply the same depth of algorithms, systems or advanced mathematics found in a four-year CS curriculum.
Examples of how named universities organize the choice
North Carolina State University: broad CS plus concentration
NC State presents game development as a concentration within its Computer Science B.S. The concentration directs selected study toward game technologies without replacing the general CS foundation. Its program description also includes communication, teamwork and social and ethical considerations, so the distinction is not simply “coding versus design.”
Cal Poly: concentration with game and CS electives
Cal Poly’s catalog places game courses inside the CS degree and allows technical electives in areas such as rendering, animation, interface design and human-computer interaction. The 120-unit flowchart helps students see sequencing, but it should be checked against the catalog year and personal degree audit.
UC Santa Cruz: computing, design and studio production
UCSC’s interdisciplinary B.S. explicitly combines computer science and computer engineering with visual communication, game systems, history, social questions and studio production. It is a useful model for students who want technical depth while treating games as an artistic and cultural medium.

Lamar University: dedicated game-development B.S.
Lamar’s plan is organized around interactive digital media, human-computer interaction and laboratory work. The university identifies both campus and online availability and advises students to verify changing requirements with an advisor or degree audit.
Arapahoe Community College: applied two-year pathway
Arapahoe’s 60-credit A.A.S. integrates programming, game-engine application and art or multimedia collaboration. It is the clearest example here of a shorter applied credential rather than a bachelor’s-level computer science education.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Accreditation is a program-level question
Do not infer accreditation from the words “computer science” or “game development.” Kennesaw State states that its B.S. in Computer Game Design and Development is accredited by ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission. NC State states that its Computer Science B.S. is accredited by the same commission. Those examples show that both an explicitly game-oriented degree and a conventional CS degree can have computing accreditation; they do not establish accreditation for every university.
Check the current accreditation statement for the exact program, campus and catalog year. An institution may accredit one degree while another degree at the same university is not covered. If accreditation matters for transfer, professional requirements or your employer’s screening process, request written confirmation from the department.
How to compare programs before applying
- Identify the credential. Write down whether the option is a CS B.S. with a game-development concentration, an interdisciplinary game-design B.S., a dedicated game-development B.S. or an applied A.A.S.
- Separate required courses from examples. Mark programming, algorithms and data structures, mathematics, systems, software engineering, graphics, design, production and game studies as required, elective or absent.
- Map the project sequence. Record every required team project, studio, internship or senior project. Note whether students build a complete game, a technical subsystem, a research project or a choice of formats.
- Check prerequisites and scheduling. A compelling upper-division class is not useful if it is offered once a year after a prerequisite bottleneck. Use the official flowchart only as a typical plan; Michigan Tech, for example, labels its four-year outline as typical and directs students to an interactive degree audit and advisor.
- Verify degree level and transfer rules. For an associate program, ask which courses transfer into a named bachelor’s program and whether transferring will add semesters.
- Confirm accreditation. Read the institution’s current statement for the precise degree rather than relying on a search result or a department nickname.
- Ask what work graduates actually complete. Request representative capstone descriptions, team sizes, assessment criteria and examples of student work. These questions reveal the practical emphasis without assuming that a project title guarantees a particular career result.
- Recheck the catalog year. UCSC’s cited structure is from 2022–23, Arapahoe’s plan is 2025–26 and Lamar’s is 2026–27. Requirements can change, so use the catalog that governs your enrollment and keep a copy of your degree audit.
Which structure fits which student?
Choose a CS concentration when breadth is your priority
A game-development concentration inside a computer science degree is the most straightforward fit if you want a broad computing education and a defined way to direct electives or projects toward games. You still need to complete the core CS sequence, so expect substantial study outside game design.
Best Value
Choose an interdisciplinary B.S. when you want engineering and creative practice
An interdisciplinary game-design degree suits students who want programming and technical systems alongside visual communication, production, game studies and collaborative studio work. Read the mathematics and systems requirements carefully to judge whether the technical depth matches your goals.
Choose a dedicated game-development B.S. when the curriculum’s focus matches you
A dedicated B.S. can organize nearly every requirement around interactive media and game technology. Compare its algorithms, software-engineering, systems and mathematics requirements with those of a general CS degree before deciding that the specialized title is the better fit.
Choose an applied A.A.S. for a shorter, practice-centered route
An applied associate degree can be appropriate when you need a two-year credential, want concentrated hands-on production or intend to transfer through a planned pathway. Confirm transfer agreements and recognize that the credential is not a substitute for a four-year CS foundation.

Official program pages describe curricula, outcomes and accreditation, but the examples above do not provide a controlled comparison of salary, employment, graduation rates, student satisfaction or long-term career mobility. They also do not represent every university in the United States or programs in other countries. It is therefore not supportable to claim that a game-development degree or a computer science degree universally produces better employment results.
Use outcomes data only when a university publishes definitions, dates and methods that you can evaluate. Otherwise, make the decision from the curriculum, project opportunities, degree level, cost and your own academic goals—then verify every requirement with the current department catalog and advisor.
