Yes—on a compatible, unlocked dual-SIM phone, you can usually add a travel eSIM for mobile data while keeping your regular SIM or eSIM active for your usual number. You select the travel line for data and keep the home line available for calls and SMS. That setup does not make the home line free: roaming charges depend on your carrier, destination, plan and what the phone does while abroad.
A travel eSIM is an additional digital mobile plan, not an automatic replacement for your existing subscription. The exact result depends on your phone model, regional variant, operating system, carrier support and whether the travel plan includes voice or SMS.

What a travel eSIM actually does
A SIM identifies your mobile subscription to a cellular network. An eSIM performs the same job digitally: Apple describes it as “a digital SIM that allows you to use a mobile plan from your network provider without having to use a physical nano-SIM.” On a phone that supports multiple lines, your home SIM and a travel eSIM can be installed as separate subscriptions.

- Calls: you can normally choose a default line, or select a line when placing a call, if the device and carrier support it.
- Messages: carrier SMS may use the home line or travel line, while internet messaging apps use whichever data or Wi-Fi connection is available.
Most phones use only one mobile-data network at a time, even when two lines are enabled. Dual-SIM behavior is therefore a configuration choice, not two completely independent cellular connections.
Can I use a travel eSIM and keep my regular SIM?
Usually, yes, if all of these conditions are met:
- The phone supports eSIM and the specific combination you want, such as a physical SIM plus eSIM or two eSIMs.
- The model is permitted to run both lines simultaneously. Regional variants can have different capabilities.
- The phone is unlocked when the home and travel plans come from different providers.
- Both carriers support the required arrangement and the travel plan covers your destination.
Apple documents physical-SIM-plus-eSIM support on compatible iPhone models and dual-eSIM operation on iPhone 13 and later. Its instructions also note that provider support and carrier unlocking matter when two providers are used. On Android, Google and Samsung describe similar choices but warn that menus and available combinations vary by model and software version. Do not assume that every handset can keep two lines active, or that every line can provide every service at the same time.
| Phone or setup factor | What to verify |
|---|---|
| eSIM capability | Confirm the exact model and regional version support eSIM. |
| Dual-line operation | Check whether your physical SIM/eSIM combination can remain active together. |
| Unlock status | A carrier-locked phone may reject a travel plan from another provider. |
| Travel plan | Check destination networks, validity, allowance, hotspot rules and whether voice or SMS is included. |
| Home plan | Check roaming prices and whether a travel pass changes them. |
How to assign data, calls and texts
iPhone
On supported iPhones, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data in some regions). Label the lines “Home” and “Travel” so the choices are unambiguous. Under cellular-data settings, select the travel line. Apple’s Dual SIM documentation says an iPhone uses one mobile-data network at a time.
- Install the travel eSIM using the provider’s QR code, app or activation instructions.
- In Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data, confirm both lines are listed and turn on the travel line.
- Set Cellular Data/Mobile Data to the travel line.
- Review Allow Cellular Data Switching. Turn it off when you want to prevent the phone from switching data to the other line if the selected line is unavailable.
- Under the options for default voice line and messages, choose the home line, travel line or “ask” option according to your plan. The labels differ by iOS version and region.
Apple’s international travel guidance says you can keep both lines on while using a travel eSIM for data, but the home line may still incur roaming fees. Its iOS 26 travel setup flow can offer a travel-only choice or a travel-plus-current-line choice; the travel line supplies data in the latter configuration. The exact flow and labels can vary by country, region and software version.
Data-roaming controls are line-specific on supported iPhones. A travel eSIM’s instructions may require roaming on that line, while your home line should be managed according to your home carrier’s instructions. There is no universal rule to turn roaming on or off for every travel plan.
Google Pixel and other Android phones
On Pixel, Google documents selecting primary SIMs for data, calls and texts under the phone’s SIM settings. A typical path is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, followed by the preferred SIM for each service. Menu names and choices change across Android releases and devices, so use the labels shown on your phone.

Samsung Galaxy phones provide similar controls through Settings > Connections > SIM manager. Samsung’s support guidance describes choosing a primary SIM for calls, texts and data when a physical SIM and eSIM are installed. Other Android manufacturers may place the same controls elsewhere.
Pixel has a model-specific caveat: during a phone call, all data can go through the SIM making that call. That behavior should not be generalized to every Android phone. If a call unexpectedly changes your data path, check the device’s current SIM documentation and your data-use settings.
Will I still get calls and texts on my regular number?
Keeping the home line enabled can keep its number available for ordinary calls and SMS while abroad, but only when your carrier, account and destination support roaming. Incoming calls, outgoing calls, received texts, sent texts and voicemail can each have different prices. Never assume that receiving a text is free; check the carrier’s current country-specific terms.
A data-only travel eSIM generally provides internet access rather than a conventional phone number, carrier voice service or SMS. Some travel plans include a number or voice/text allowance, but that is a plan feature to verify, not a universal eSIM property.
Internet messaging is different from carrier SMS
iMessage, FaceTime, Google Messages’ internet functions, WhatsApp, Signal and similar services use data or Wi-Fi. Apple says FaceTime and iMessage can continue using the home line when you use only the travel eSIM for data. That does not convert a normal carrier call or SMS into an app call or message.

With iMessage, the selected send-from number or Apple Account can affect how the recipient sees the message. A blue-bubble iMessage and a carrier SMS are different services with different delivery and charging rules. The same distinction applies to other messaging apps, which depend on internet access and their own account setup.

Wi-Fi calling
Wi-Fi calling over a travel eSIM’s data connection may work, but support is carrier- and device-dependent. The travel plan, home carrier and phone must all support the arrangement. Confirm it with your home provider and test it before relying on Wi-Fi calling for important conversations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I get charged if my regular SIM is on?
Yes. Selecting the travel eSIM as the data line reduces the chance that ordinary app data uses the home plan, but it does not guarantee that the home line creates no charges. The home line can still register on a foreign network and handle calls, SMS, voicemail or other roaming activity.
Before departure, check the home carrier’s international terms for your exact destination. Some plans include roaming or offer a travel pass; others bill data, calls and messages separately. Ask specifically about incoming and outgoing calls, incoming and outgoing SMS, voicemail retrieval, background data and any daily-pass trigger.

- Set the travel eSIM as the data line and review data switching so the phone cannot silently use the home plan.
- Manage each line’s data-roaming setting according to that line’s carrier instructions.
- Do not rely on turning off data roaming alone to block every voice, SMS or voicemail charge.
Setup checklist before you leave
- Confirm hardware: check eSIM support, simultaneous line support and regional model restrictions.
- Confirm unlocking: verify that the phone accepts a plan from a different provider.
- Check coverage: verify destination countries, partner networks, expected coverage and activation requirements.
- Read the plan terms: note the data allowance, expiry date, activation window, hotspot policy and whether voice, SMS or a local number is included.
- Check the home carrier: get current roaming prices and travel-pass rules for the destination.
- Install and label: add the eSIM while you have reliable internet and label both lines clearly.
- Choose defaults: select the travel line for data, then deliberately choose the line for calls and messages.
- Review switching and roaming: inspect mobile-data switching and roaming controls separately for each line.
- Protect account access: if banking or account verification depends on SMS, arrange a backup method. Do not assume verification texts will arrive abroad or be free.
- Test: before departure, test data, a message, account access and any calling method you expect to use.
Which arrangement should you use?
The right choice depends on whether keeping your regular number reachable is more important than minimizing exposure to home-line roaming.
| Arrangement | Best when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Home line on plus travel eSIM for data | You need your regular number for possible calls, SMS or verification and have confirmed roaming terms. | The home line can still create roaming charges. |
| Home line off plus travel eSIM for data | You want to reduce the chance of home-line cellular roaming and can use internet services instead. | Carrier calls and SMS to the home number are unavailable while that line is off. |
| Home carrier’s travel pass or roaming plan | You prefer one supported account and the home carrier’s price and coverage are acceptable. | Cost, allowance and destination coverage may differ from a separate travel plan. |
Compare each option on six points: reachability of the home number, total cost for data and voice/SMS, whether the travel service is data-only, destination coverage and speed, activation and validity period, and how easily you can recover if setup fails.
Common problems and fixes
The travel eSIM installs but has no data
- Confirm the travel line is turned on and selected under cellular data.
- Check whether the travel plan requires data roaming on that line.
- Verify destination coverage, activation timing and remaining allowance.
- Temporarily disable automatic data switching and restart the phone.
The phone will not add the eSIM
- Check that the phone is carrier-unlocked.
- Confirm the model and regional variant support the eSIM and the intended dual-line combination.
- Use the activation method supplied by the travel provider and install while connected to reliable Wi-Fi.
- Contact the home or travel carrier if the device reports a provisioning or compatibility error.
Calls or SMS do not arrive on the regular number
- Confirm the home line is enabled and has network service.
- Check whether the carrier supports roaming in the country you are visiting.
- Review call and message defaults; a data-only travel plan cannot replace carrier SMS.
- Use an internet messaging service or a prearranged verification method when carrier roaming is unavailable.
Unexpected charges appear
- Review which line handled the call, message or data session.
- Check whether a daily roaming pass was triggered by the home line.
- Turn off the home line if you no longer need its number and ask the carrier to explain any charge before changing settings further.
What to do when you return home
Switch cellular data back to the home line, confirm the home line is enabled and turn off or remove the travel line when its service is no longer needed. Apple says iOS 26 may restore the home line automatically in some regions, but verify the settings rather than relying on automation. Check that calls, SMS, voicemail and account verification work before deleting the travel eSIM; deleting a plan can require a new activation if you need it again.
