The word eSIM describes how the plan is delivered, not whether it includes a phone number, cellular calls or SMS. Many travel offers are data-only, while some include voice, texting and a local number; only the exact plan terms for your destination can answer which one you are buying.
What a travel eSIM actually is
An eSIM is a digital SIM that lets a device use a mobile plan without inserting a physical nano-SIM. Apple describes it as “a digital SIM that allows you to use a mobile plan from your network provider without having to use a physical nano-SIM.” The plan is downloaded to the phone’s embedded SIM hardware and then activated through the carrier or travel provider.

“Travel eSIM” normally means a plan intended for use outside your home market. You might buy it from a carrier in the country you are visiting or from a travel connectivity provider that covers one or more destinations. The important point is that the delivery method and the service features are separate decisions: an eSIM can carry data only, or it can be provisioned with a number, voice and SMS.

There is no universal answer. Some plans provide a local number; many popular travel offers provide data only and no number at all. A documented example is Vodafone’s UK Travel eSIM, whose terms say it is data-only and does not include a UK phone number for making or receiving standard calls and SMS messages. That is evidence about that specific UK offer, not a rule for every eSIM or destination.

Look for three separate statements in the plan description:
- Local number: whether the provider assigns a telephone number in the destination country.
- Standard voice: whether ordinary calls through the cellular network are included, supported and charged under the plan.
- SMS: whether the plan can send and receive carrier text messages, including any limits or exclusions.
If any of those items is not stated, treat it as unconfirmed. “Unlimited data,” “4G/5G access” or “instant activation” does not imply a number or cellular calling.
Data-only eSIMs versus voice-enabled plans
| Plan type | What it normally supplies | What it does not promise | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data-only travel eSIM | Mobile internet on the listed networks and destinations, subject to the plan’s allowance and validity. | A local telephone number, ordinary cellular calls or carrier SMS. | Maps, transport apps, web access, email and internet calling. |
| Voice-and-SMS travel eSIM | Data plus the voice and texting features explicitly listed by the provider; a number may be assigned. | Features that the terms omit, such as international calls, premium SMS or use outside the stated coverage. | Travellers who need ordinary calls, text messages or a destination number. |
| Home line used alongside a travel eSIM | Your existing number remains available on the home SIM or eSIM, while the travel line supplies data when configured that way. | Freedom from home-carrier roaming charges; support for every combination of calls, texts and data. | Receiving calls or messages on a familiar number while controlling data costs. |
A data-only plan can still support calls and messages inside internet-based apps. Those communications use the eSIM’s data connection and the app’s account system; they are not the same as a carrier call or SMS sent to a mobile number. A provider’s own help wording may ask, “Does your travel eSIM support calls and SMS, or just data?” Read the answer for the exact product rather than inferring it from the app compatibility list.

On a compatible Dual SIM phone, the home line and travel line can be stored at the same time. The phone presents separate controls for the line used for mobile data and, where supported, the default line for calls and messages. Apple notes that an iPhone uses one cellular data network at a time. You can select the travel line for data while retaining the home line for its number, but the available combinations depend on the model, operating-system settings and carrier support.

Dual SIM does not merge the plans. Each line remains subject to its own coverage, billing and roaming rules. A phone may keep the home line registered to a network for incoming calls or verification texts while the travel eSIM carries internet traffic. In another configuration, you can disable the home line completely and avoid its roaming exposure, but you will not receive services through that line until it is turned back on.
Setting up a travel eSIM before and after arrival
1. Confirm compatibility before purchase
- Check that the phone model supports eSIM and, if you want both lines active, Dual SIM operation.
- Confirm that the device is not locked to a home carrier that blocks another provider’s plan.
- Check the destination, covered networks, validity period and activation rules. Some plans start when installed; others start when they first connect abroad.
- Verify whether the plan is data-only or includes a number, voice and SMS.
2. Install the plan using the provider’s instructions
Most providers supply an in-app installation flow or a QR code. Connect to Wi-Fi, open the phone’s cellular or mobile-data settings, choose the option to add a plan, and follow the on-screen instructions. Keep the activation details until the line is working; deleting an eSIM can require a new download or a provider-issued replacement.
3. Label the lines clearly
Give the plans unambiguous labels such as “Home” and “Travel.” This reduces the risk of selecting the wrong line for data or accidentally placing a call through the roaming line. The exact menu names differ by phone and software version, but the controls are generally under Cellular, Mobile Data or SIM Manager.

Select the travel line as the mobile-data line when you want internet traffic to use that allowance. On supported iPhones, the cellular settings include a choice of which line handles data. Some devices also offer a setting that permits mobile-data switching; leave it off if you do not want the phone to fall back to the home line and potentially create roaming charges.

5. Decide what happens to the home line
If you need your usual number for incoming calls or messages, leave the home line enabled only after checking its roaming terms. If avoiding all roaming costs is the priority, turn that line off and use the travel line plus internet-based communication instead. Test the arrangement before relying on it for a time-sensitive login or booking.
6. Test data and communication separately
- Turn off Wi-Fi and load a webpage to confirm that the travel line supplies data.
- Check the status indicator or SIM manager to verify which line is active for data.
- If the plan claims voice or SMS, place a short test call and send a text according to the provider’s instructions.
- If the plan is data-only, test the internet calling or messaging apps you expect to use.
Can you keep your usual phone number?
Often, yes, if the phone and carriers support Dual SIM. You can keep the home line installed for its existing number and designate the travel eSIM as the data line. This lets contacts continue to use the familiar number while maps, email and other internet services consume the travel allowance.
Keeping the line active does not guarantee that every service will work abroad. Voice and messaging availability depends on the home carrier’s roaming agreements, the destination network and the device’s Dual SIM implementation. The home carrier may charge for roaming even when no call is answered, depending on its rules and the phone’s network activity. Apple’s travel guidance specifically warns that using both lines can still result in roaming fees from the home provider.
Recommended Free Tools
Before departure, read the home carrier’s roaming terms and review settings for data roaming, automatic network selection and mobile-data switching. If receiving a one-time verification SMS is essential, confirm that the home line can receive it abroad and understand the associated charge.

What a local number changes
Local calls and businesses
A destination number can make it easier to call hotels, restaurants, taxis or local services that do not accept internet calls. Check whether the plan includes calls to local numbers, international numbers or only a limited category of destinations; a supplied number alone does not define the tariff.
SMS verification
Some services require a carrier SMS rather than an in-app message. A data-only eSIM cannot receive that text on its own because it has no associated number. You may need to keep the home line active, use an account’s alternate verification method, or buy a plan that explicitly includes SMS. Banking and other security systems can also reject temporary or foreign numbers, so verify the requirement before travel.
Identity and callbacks
If you give a number to a host, employer or delivery service, decide whether you will still control it after the plan expires. A local number tied to a short-validity travel plan may stop working when the allowance ends or the service is removed.
What to compare before buying
| Question | Why it matters | What to verify in the terms |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it work? | Coverage can vary by country, territory and partner network. | Destination list, supported networks and any regional exclusions. |
| How much data and time are included? | Allowance and expiry determine whether the plan lasts your trip. | Data amount or speed policy, validity, start trigger and top-up rules. |
| Is it data-only? | Data does not automatically provide a number, calls or SMS. | Explicit wording for local number, cellular voice and carrier texting. |
| Will the phone accept it? | An incompatible or locked phone cannot use the downloaded plan. | eSIM and Dual SIM support, carrier-unlock status and activation method. |
| What happens to the home line? | Leaving it enabled can expose you to roaming charges. | Home-carrier rates, data-roaming behavior and settings that permit switching. |
| When does billing or validity begin? | Installing a plan early can consume its active period on some offers. | Whether the clock starts at installation, activation or first network use. |
Common problems and practical fixes
The phone shows no service after installation
- Confirm that the travel line is turned on and selected for mobile data.
- Check that the destination is covered and that the plan has reached its activation point.
- Restart the phone or toggle the affected line off and on.
- If manual network selection is available, follow the provider’s listed network guidance.
- Contact the provider before deleting the eSIM; removal may prevent reinstallation without support.
Data works, but calls or SMS fail
This usually indicates a data-only plan or a voice feature that requires a separate activation. Re-read the plan terms for a local number, cellular voice and SMS. If those features are absent, use internet calling and messaging apps or keep a supported home line active.
Best Value
The home carrier reports roaming usage
Check which line is selected for data and whether mobile-data switching is enabled. Disable the home line or its data-roaming option if you do not need it, then confirm that the travel line still has connectivity. Ask the home carrier how it bills incoming calls, outgoing calls, texts and background network registration; those policies differ.
A QR code or activation link will not work
Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection, confirm that the code has not already been used, and follow the provider’s device-specific instructions. If the plan was installed on another phone or the code expired, only the provider can issue the appropriate replacement or reset.
Decision guide: which setup fits your trip?
- You only need internet: A data-only travel eSIM is usually sufficient. Use app-based calls and messages over that connection.
- You need local businesses to call you: Choose a plan that explicitly supplies a destination number and includes ordinary voice calls.
- You need carrier SMS verification: Confirm SMS support for the travel plan, or verify that your home line can receive texts abroad at an acceptable cost.
- You must remain reachable on your usual number: Use a supported Dual SIM setup, select the travel line for data and check the home carrier’s roaming terms before leaving.
- You want to eliminate home-line charges: Turn the home line off and rely on the travel plan and internet-based services, accepting that your usual number will be unavailable until re-enabled.
The bottom line on travel eSIM phone numbers
An eSIM is a format for storing a mobile plan, not a promise of telephone service. The plan may be data-only, or it may include a local number, standard calls and SMS. Confirm those features in the destination-specific terms, check device and carrier compatibility, and decide deliberately whether to leave your home line active. That combination of plan details and phone settings determines whether you can browse only, communicate through apps, or use a conventional number while travelling.
