How Travel Apps Share Your Location and Booking Data—and How to Limit It

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Short answer: one phone permission cannot make travel activity private. An app may use precise GPS, an approximate device location, a rough area inferred from your IP address, location recorded by a driver or other service, and searches or bookings attached to your account. To reduce exposure, change device permissions, review each app’s sharing disclosure, disconnect optional services, and separately delete or limit account history. A VPN can change the apparent IP-based area, but it cannot revoke GPS access or erase booking records.

What “location data” includes

Travel services use the word location for several different data streams. They can coexist, so disabling one does not necessarily disable the others.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Data source What it can reveal What controls it
Precise device location GPS or other high-accuracy readings from your phone Operating-system permission, including precise versus approximate choices where offered
Approximate device location A less exact area supplied by the operating system Operating-system location permission and the approximate-location option
IP-derived area A rough geographic area associated with your internet connection Network routing, including a VPN; this does not remove account or GPS data
Service-recorded trip location Pickup, route and drop-off information recorded by a driver, vehicle or transport system Usually the service’s account and trip controls, not only the phone permission
Search and booking history Destinations searched, hotels or flights viewed, reservations, preferences and related account activity Account privacy, history, retention, deletion and connected-service settings

Google explains that an IP address can indicate a general area, while device and app permissions govern a separate location pathway. A booking account can therefore retain travel information even after an app loses access to your phone’s location.

How the major data pathways work

Google location, Timeline and Search Services History

Google’s policy distinguishes device location from activity associated with your account. When Timeline is enabled, it can save precise device locations regularly, including at times when Google apps are not open. Google states that Timeline is turned off by default. That statement applies to Google Timeline only; it is not a guarantee that other Google or travel-app location processing is off.

Google’s Search Services History can include activity in Maps, Hotels and Flights. Examples include searches, places viewed, travel booked, interactions with ads and a general-area location. Google says saved location metadata in that history is automatically deleted after 30 days. Other history categories and retention settings are managed separately, so that 30-day period is not a universal deletion schedule for every record.

Turning off Timeline does not automatically stop Search Services History, IP-derived area information or data already associated with your account. Review each control independently, then inspect the records that remain before assuming they are gone.

Ride services and driver-collected location

Uber requests device location to support rider features and says Bluetooth and nearby Wi-Fi signals can also be location-related inputs. Depending on the platform, permission choices may include while using, one-time or ask-every-time, and disabled. If you disable app location, Uber says you can still request a ride by entering pickup and drop-off locations manually. Its help wording is: You can still use the app, but you’ll need to enter your pickup and dropoff locations manually.

Manual entry changes how the app obtains your starting point; it does not make the trip untracked. Uber says location collected from the driver during a trip may still be linked to the rider’s account. In some cities, governments or transportation authorities receive order start, stop and route information based on vehicle geolocation and timestamps. Uber says it informs riders before trips where that arrangement applies and notes that the information could be identifiable with effort.

Booking platforms

Expedia Group says it receives personal data from customers, automatically through site and app technologies such as cookies, and from affiliates, business partners and other third parties. Its policy describes sharing needed to arrange and provide travel, communicate with customers and providers, operate loyalty programs, perform market research and analytics, and comply with law. If you choose to connect an account to a third-party tool, the information made available can include travel searches, preferences, account-related information, booking links and technical data. The policy version described here was last updated May 6, 2026.

Airbnb’s 2026 policy lists precise or approximate location obtained from IP, device GPS or information you provide. It says location may be collected while the app is not in use when you enable that behavior through settings or permissions. The same policy describes searches, bookings, pages and services used, device and advertising identifiers, and information received through third-party connections such as social sign-in.

Step 1: Reduce device-level location access

Start with the phone, because this is the layer you can change without waiting for a company to process an account request. Menu names vary by device maker and operating-system release, but the permission concepts are consistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose foreground access instead of background access

  1. Open your phone’s Settings, then open Privacy or Location.
  2. Open the app-permission list and select each travel, ride, hotel or airline app.
  3. Set location to Allow only while using the app when background updates are not required. Avoid Allow all the time unless you specifically need a feature that depends on it.
  4. Where the operating system offers it, turn off Use precise location and leave approximate location enabled.
  5. If you rarely use the app, choose Ask every time or Deny, then grant access only for a task that genuinely needs it.

Android documents choices such as allow all the time, allow only while using, ask every time and a separate precise-versus-approximate control. Availability varies by Android version and device. iOS and other platforms use different labels, so read the permission description rather than assuming that a similarly named toggle has identical behavior.

Expect a feature trade-off

Disabling location can remove automatic pickup suggestions, nearby search, turn-by-turn features or background alerts. Test the app after changing the permission. If a ride app accepts manual pickup and drop-off entry, use that option when practical, while remembering that the vehicle can still generate trip-location records.

Step 2: Read the app’s sharing disclosure without treating it as proof

On Android, the app-store data-safety area may say that an app shares location with third parties and may list purposes such as advertising or marketing, account management, functionality or analytics. This is a developer-provided disclosure, not an independent audit. Android warns: If you do not see an information box, it does not mean that the app does not share location data. A missing disclosure can reflect store or device support, the developer’s statement, or a difference in the app version.

Use the disclosure as a checklist. Look for whether location is collected or shared, whether collection can occur in the background, the stated purposes, and whether deletion or correction is offered. Then compare those statements with the app’s own privacy controls and policy. Do not infer “no sharing” from silence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Separate account history from phone permissions

Phone permissions govern a sensor pathway. They do not automatically delete searches, reservations, identifiers or records that a company already associates with your account.

Google accounts

  1. Open your Google Account privacy controls and inspect Timeline. Review saved trips, edit inaccurate entries, delete individual records or clear the collection, and check the retention setting.
  2. Open Search Services History separately. Review activity from Maps, Hotels and Flights, including searches, viewed places, bookings, ad interactions and general-area information.
  3. Use the available deletion and auto-delete controls for each history type. Verify the date range and category before confirming.
  4. Recheck connected apps and account activity. Turning off Timeline does not switch off Search Services History or IP-based location signals.

Google’s 30-day automatic deletion statement applies to saved location metadata in Search Services History, not necessarily to every item in that history and not to all Google account records.

Booking and accommodation accounts

  • Open the account’s privacy, personalization and advertising sections, and disable optional personalization where the service permits it.
  • Review connected services, social sign-ins and travel-planning tools. Disconnect integrations you no longer use; a connection can expose searches, preferences, account information, booking links or technical data.
  • Use the account’s access, download, correction and deletion tools. Read what deletion covers, because legal, fraud-prevention or transaction records may have different retention rules.
  • Check email and notification preferences separately. Marketing settings do not necessarily stop operational messages or erase reservation history.

Step 4: Limit unrelated permissions

Review camera, microphone, contacts, Bluetooth, nearby-device, motion and photo permissions as well as location. The Federal Trade Commission recommends disabling access an app does not need. A hotel app that only displays an existing reservation may not require continuous location, contacts or microphone access. Revoke unused permissions, then test the functions you actually use.

Private browsing helps keep local browser history from being saved in the usual way, but it does not prevent websites or apps from seeing online activity, receiving account data or associating a booking with you.

What a VPN changes—and what it cannot

A VPN can make a service see the VPN server’s IP address instead of your ordinary connection. That may change an approximate area inferred from IP. It does not revoke a travel app’s GPS permission, prevent Bluetooth or nearby-Wi-Fi signals from being used, remove a driver’s trip record, or delete searches and bookings tied to an account.

This is why a VPN should be treated as a network-location measure, not a complete travel-privacy solution. If an app still has precise location permission, the device signal can be more useful than the VPN’s IP address. If you sign in and book, the account can still contain the reservation and related identifiers.

How to compare privacy choices between travel apps

No universal ranking of travel apps by privacy is established by the policies described here. Compare the choices that affect your own use:

Question Why it matters Evidence to look for
Precise or approximate? Precise data can identify a building or route; approximate data may support broader search. Operating-system permission and the app’s policy
Foreground or background? Background access can collect when you are not actively using the app. Permission screen and background-collection explanation
Device or IP location? Changing network routing affects IP estimates, not device sensors. Separate descriptions of GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and IP
Does manual entry work? You may be able to use a service without granting continuous device access. Help documentation and an actual test after denying permission
How long is history kept? Deletion of a permission does not delete account records. Retention periods, auto-delete, access and deletion tools
Who receives data and why? Sharing for booking, analytics, advertising, providers or authorities has different implications. Named recipients or categories and stated purposes
Is the disclosure independently verified? A store label is based largely on developer-provided information. Independent audit or regulator finding, if one exists

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“I denied location, so the company has no location about me.”

Correct the assumption by checking account history and service-recorded trips. A denied sensor permission stops or limits one input; it does not erase prior records or necessarily block IP-derived area information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Timeline is off, so all Google travel activity is off.”

Inspect Search Services History separately. Maps, Hotels and Flights activity can remain governed by another control, and Google describes a separate 30-day deletion rule for saved location metadata in that history.

“The app store shows no sharing, so there is no sharing.”

Read the disclosure limitations. Android explicitly says that the absence of an information box is not proof that an app does not share location data.

“A VPN makes a booking anonymous.”

A VPN may alter IP-based area estimation, but signing in, paying, receiving a confirmation or using a driver-recorded service can still connect the activity to your account.

“Manual pickup entry prevents trip tracking.”

Manual entry only replaces the app’s automatic pickup input. Uber states that driver-collected trip location may still be linked to the rider account.

A practical privacy checklist

  1. List every travel, ride, hotel, airline and itinerary app on your phone.
  2. Set each app to while-using or ask-every-time access, and choose approximate location where available.
  3. Disable background location unless a feature genuinely requires it.
  4. Test manual destination or pickup entry after denying location.
  5. Read the app-store disclosure and the app’s privacy settings; do not treat a blank disclosure as a guarantee.
  6. Disconnect unused social sign-ins, itinerary integrations and other connected services.
  7. Review Google Timeline and Search Services History as separate account controls.
  8. Delete old searches, trips and bookings through the relevant account tools, checking the scope of each deletion.
  9. Turn off unnecessary camera, microphone, contacts, Bluetooth and nearby-device permissions.
  10. Use a VPN only for the limited purpose of changing apparent IP-based area, not as a substitute for permission and account controls.

What the policies can—and cannot—establish

Privacy policies describe stated practices, not a live measurement of every network request or a guarantee that every app release behaves identically. Settings differ by operating system, version, account choice and country. The examples above show why privacy work has to cover both the device and the service account.

Regulatory action can illuminate risks without proving that every travel app sells location data. The Federal Trade Commission’s action concerning X-Mode/Outlogic is an example of enforcement involving sensitive location-data sharing and downstream risks; it is not evidence that all travel services follow the same practice. For a precise decision, read the policy and controls for the exact app, device and region you use.
