The protocol values the collateral with a price feed, measures debt against that value with a ratio such as loan-to-value (LTV) or minted-to-value (MTV), and can sell some or all of the collateral if the position becomes undercollateralized. The exact legal rights attached to the token, accepted assets, thresholds, fees and liquidation process are product-specific; there is no universal rule for every gold-backed token or lending market.
What tokenized commodity lending is
A tokenized commodity is a blockchain token designed to represent an interest in a commodity or a claim connected with one. Gold tokens are the clearest example, but a protocol may define any eligible real-world asset in its collateral rules. Lending does not turn the token into a physical bar. Instead, the protocol records a digital collateral balance and a debt balance in a smart contract or related system.

Two structures appear in the documented examples:
| Structure | What the user deposits | What the user receives | Example described by the provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Borrowing | An eligible commodity token | A loan in a stablecoin or other debt asset | Arowana describes borrowing USDT against AGT gold collateral. |
| Minting | An eligible commodity token | A newly minted protocol asset | Alloy documents depositing XAU₮ to mint aUSD₮ in a collateral minted position (CMP). |
| Multi-asset real-world-asset lending | Tokenized gold or another approved asset | A debt asset defined by the market | OpenFi describes a design that can accept tokenized gold alongside other assets. |
These are separate provider designs, not interchangeable products. A token accepted by one market may be rejected by another because of custody, jurisdiction, liquidity, smart-contract or compliance requirements.

The lending lifecycle, step by step
- Check eligibility. Confirm the exact token contract, network, issuer, custody arrangement, customer jurisdiction and any minimum or maximum position size. A symbol that looks familiar may not be the contract address approved by the lending market.
- Deposit collateral. You transfer the eligible commodity token to the protocol. The system records the quantity and applies the market’s valuation and risk parameters.
- Value the collateral. An oracle supplies a reference price. The protocol may apply a haircut, discount or buffer rather than treating the quoted market price as fully available collateral value.
- Borrow or mint within the opening limit. The amount you can draw is constrained by an initial LTV or MTV. A lower ratio leaves more room for a price decline.
- Accrue debt. Interest, stability fees, origination fees or other charges can increase the amount that must be repaid even if the commodity price is unchanged.
- Monitor the position. Watch the collateral price, oracle status, debt growth, ratio and liquidation threshold. A position can become unsafe without a new loan if interest accumulates or the token price falls.
- Repay and withdraw. Repay the required debt and fees, then withdraw collateral if the protocol permits it. If the ratio reaches a liquidation trigger first, the liquidation rules take precedence.
Collateral rights are not the same as ownership of a bar
Holding a tokenized commodity token does not automatically give you a universal right to redeem physical metal. Redemption depends on the issuer’s legal terms, custody model, identity checks, geography, minimum size, fees, operating hours and available inventory. Some tokens may represent a direct claim; others may provide an economic exposure or a contractual entitlement with conditions.

A lending protocol generally verifies whether a token meets its own collateral policy, not whether every holder has an unconditional right to take delivery. Read the issuer’s terms and the protocol’s collateral documentation separately. A claim that a token is “gold-backed” does not, by itself, establish who owns the metal, where it is stored, how audits work or how redemption is settled.
LTV and MTV: the ratios that determine borrowing room
LTV is loan value divided by collateral value. MTV is minted value divided by collateral value. Both express how much debt is supported by the collateral:
LTV = loan value ÷ collateral value × 100
MTV = minted value ÷ collateral value × 100
Suppose you deposit tokens valued by the protocol at $100,000 and borrow $50,000. Your LTV is 50%. If the token value falls to $80,000 while the debt remains $50,000, the LTV rises to 62.5%. The debt did not increase, but the collateral cushion shrank. Interest or fees would push the ratio higher still.

The maximum opening ratio and the liquidation ratio are different settings. A market might let you open at a conservative ratio and liquidate only after a higher ratio is reached. The difference is your headroom, not a guaranteed loss limit. Volatile assets, thin markets and slow redemption channels generally require larger buffers.
How the protocol values and monitors collateral
Price feeds and oracle behavior
The protocol uses an oracle or other defined pricing mechanism to estimate collateral value. OpenFi says its design uses Chainlink pricing and asset-specific parameters; that is the provider’s description, not an independent guarantee of uptime, accuracy or execution price. An oracle value can differ from the price at which a large position could actually be sold.
Haircuts, discounts and asset-specific settings
Risk settings can reduce the usable value of a token through a haircut or liquidation discount. OpenFi describes varying parameters by asset volatility and redemption lag. A token that trades continuously on a secondary market may still be difficult to redeem or liquidate quickly if the underlying commodity market is closed or a custodian is delayed.

Stale, unavailable or disrupted prices
Ask what happens when the feed is stale, paused or outside its normal market hours. Possible controls include rejecting new borrowing, freezing withdrawals, using a fallback source, applying a conservative price or allowing governance to pause the market. The source descriptions establish that oracle use and risk controls matter, but they do not establish a universal failure rate or a guaranteed fallback price.
What happens when tokenized gold falls in value
If collateral value falls while debt stays constant, LTV or MTV rises. Once the ratio reaches the protocol’s liquidation threshold, the position becomes eligible for liquidation. Eligibility is not necessarily an instantaneous sale: the protocol may rely on authorized liquidators, an auction, a market sale or another execution path.
Liquidator repayment and collateral transfer
A liquidator supplies some or all of the amount required to reduce the debt. In return, the protocol transfers collateral under its incentive rules. The liquidator may receive collateral worth more than the debt repaid or buy it at a discount. That spread is intended to compensate for gas, slippage, financing and price risk.

Partial versus full liquidation
Liquidation does not always close the entire position. A partial process sells only enough collateral to bring the remaining loan back to a safer ratio. A full close transfers enough collateral to repay the whole debt, when the rules and available liquidity allow it. Read the target post-liquidation ratio and minimum sale size; they determine whether one event can leave you with a smaller, still-open position.
Published Alloy example
Alloy’s documentation describes whitelisted liquidators returning aUSD₮ for some or all of the XAU₮ collateral in eligible positions. Its published aUSD₮ vault terms state a 75% MTV liquidation point, a 105% collateral premium and a 0.75% liquidation fee. Those figures apply to that documented vault, are provider-published terms rather than industry standards, and should be checked against the live parameters before relying on them.

Arowana describes partial liquidation in its AGT-collateralized USDT lending flow: collateral is sold and the proceeds reduce the loan until the position returns to a stated safer LTV. The description demonstrates the mechanism, but the exact current limits, fees and target ratio must be read from the relevant market rather than inferred from another protocol.

Why execution can differ from the oracle price
Liquidation may incur slippage, spread, network congestion and a delay between the price observation and the sale. OpenFi’s proposed framework includes liquidation discounts and buffers for possible redemption delays during stress. That is a risk-design example, not a promise that a liquidation will execute at a particular price.

| Question | Alloy documented CMP | Arowana documented lending flow | OpenFi described framework |
|---|---|---|---|
| Collateral and debt asset | XAU₮ deposited to mint aUSD₮ | AGT used as gold collateral to borrow USDT | Tokenized gold can be one asset among several RWAs |
| Valuation | Vault-specific oracle and parameters; exact feed details not stated in the cited description | Asset-specific lending parameters; exact feed details not stated in the cited description | Provider says Chainlink pricing with asset-specific parameters |
| Liquidation trigger | 75% MTV in the published aUSD₮ vault terms | Provider describes a stated safer-LTV target; exact threshold not stated here | Parameters vary by asset and risk characteristics |
| Liquidation actor | Whitelisted liquidators | Provider describes a partial-sale process; permission model not stated here | Framework description does not establish a universal actor model |
| Liquidation amount | Some or all collateral, depending on the position and rules | Partial sale until the loan returns to the safer LTV | Discounts and buffers are proposed for stress conditions |
| Fees or incentive | 105% collateral premium and 0.75% liquidation fee in the published vault terms | Exact premium and fee not stated here | Exact premium and fee not stated here |
Do not compare a 75% ratio in one product with a 75% ratio in another as if the risks were identical. The collateral token, oracle, debt growth, sale method, liquidity, permissions and post-liquidation target can all differ.
Risks that can turn a safe-looking position into a loss
- Market and oracle risk: The token’s traded price, the oracle value and the executable sale price may diverge. A stale or unavailable feed can delay action or trigger conservative controls.
- Liquidation risk: You can lose collateral, including more than the amount needed to repay principal, because premiums, fees and discounts are part of the liquidation design.
- Liquidity and redemption risk: A token may trade while its underlying commodity redemption channel is slow, restricted or unavailable. Stress buffers do not eliminate that risk.
- Smart-contract and governance risk: DeFi systems are technologically and economically complex. The BIS Working Paper 1066 page, published 2023-01-19, notes that programmable DeFi components may create efficiency gains, while the same programmability introduces code, administration and incentive risks. That background is not an audit of any named protocol.
- Legal and jurisdictional risk: The CFTC’s staff guidance listing dated 2025-12-08 addresses tokenized assets used as collateral in futures and swaps. It does not determine the legal status of every token, lending arrangement or jurisdiction.
- Parameter-change risk: Governance or administrators may change accepted collateral, ratios, fees, oracle settings, pause controls or liquidator permissions. A value seen today may not be permanent.
A practical due-diligence checklist
Before depositing a tokenized commodity, record the answers to these questions from the current issuer and protocol documentation:
- What legal claim does the token provide, who holds the commodity, and what are the redemption conditions?
- Is your country, entity type and account eligible to hold the token and borrow?
- What exact token contract, blockchain and collateral market are approved?
- What are the opening LTV or MTV, liquidation threshold, debt ceiling and minimum position?
- How do interest, stability fees and penalties change the debt balance?
- Which oracle supplies the price, how often does it update, and what happens when it is stale or unavailable?
- Are liquidators whitelisted, permissionless or selected through an auction?
- Is liquidation partial or full, what discount or premium applies, and what fee is charged?
- What ratio must remain after liquidation, and can a residual position be left open?
- How deep is the collateral market during stress, and how long can redemption or settlement take?
- Which administrators can pause, upgrade or recover the contracts, and are those powers documented?
How much should you borrow?
Use the protocol’s current opening limit as a ceiling, not a target. A conservative borrower models a price decline, debt growth and sale slippage together. For example, if $100,000 of collateral supports a $40,000 loan, a fall to $70,000 makes the ratio 57.1% before interest. If a liquidation sale realizes less than the oracle value, the effective ratio is higher than the screen may show.
Keep a reserve of the debt asset for repayment or add collateral before the threshold is reached. Do not assume that a token’s ability to be redeemed for metal will make a stressed liquidation orderly; redemption may require approval, minimum lots or a functioning custodian.
Bottom line
Tokenized commodity lending is a collateralized borrowing or minting system governed by a token’s legal terms and a protocol’s risk parameters. LTV or MTV measures your debt against the protocol’s collateral value; falling prices, rising debt or an impaired oracle reduce your safety margin. Once a liquidation threshold is reached, a liquidator can repay part or all of the debt and receive collateral under the product’s incentive rules. Treat every ratio, fee, oracle and redemption promise as specific to the current product, and verify those terms before committing funds.
