Tokenized bonds could borrow a lesson from India’s UPI story: shared digital infrastructure can make a service easier to access and help adoption scale. But UPI’s success does not show that tokenized bonds already have equivalent legal certainty, investor protections, servicing or settlement. Those bond-market conditions have to work in their own right.
What Tajinder Virk’s summit comparison says—and does not say
At the ZBusiness Bond Tokenization Summit 2026, the reported panel “Code to Capital: Tokenizing the Bond Market” included Tajinder Virk, identified by company materials as FINVASIA’s Co-Founder and CEO, alongside Vaibhav Laddha of Grip Invest and Kanhaiya Singh of E-SUTRA. Kanishka Sarkar, a WION anchor, was named as moderator. Grip Invest’s company recap says the discussion covered retail access, fractionalisation, digitisation and adoption in India.

Blockmaze’s news page listed the summit as a co-presented event and, on September 10, 2026, published the headline “Like UPI, India can lead the world in tokenization,” attributed to Blockmaze CEO Tajinder Virk. That headline supports the broad comparison, but it is not a verified verbatim quotation or a transcript of his remarks. The defensible interpretation is an adoption analogy: India’s experience with widely usable payment infrastructure may offer lessons for making digital financial services accessible at scale.

The Reserve Bank of India reported 16.6 billion retail UPI transactions in October 2024 and approximately 61 crore active UPI QR codes as of September 2024. These are dated measures, not 2026 totals. Together, they illustrate the reach of a shared payment system and its acceptance points across everyday commerce.

The useful comparison is not that bonds and payments are the same product. It is that common digital rails can reduce friction when many participants can use them consistently. For tokenized bonds, the analogous ambition would be a clear, dependable route for issuers, intermediaries and investors to interact with a digital representation of a bond. Whether a particular design achieves that depends on its legal and market arrangements, not on the word “tokenized.”
What a bond token represents
A bond is a financial claim: it has an issuer, contractual cash flows and ownership rights. Tokenization creates or uses a digital representation of an asset or claim on a ledger. That representation alone does not establish that a ledger entry transfers legally recognized ownership, that the issuer will make payments and provide required servicing, or that investors can reliably settle transactions and enforce their rights.
This is why the analogy has limits. UPI is payment infrastructure; a bond is an investment instrument. Making a bond’s representation digital does not automatically provide the legal, operational and investor-protection arrangements that make the instrument usable.

What has to be in place for bond adoption to scale
UPI-style reach would require more than a digital interface. Each part of the bond lifecycle needs to work clearly for participants:
- Legal ownership and transfer: the governing documents and applicable rules need to establish what the token represents, who holds the legal claim, and how a transfer is recognized.
- Issuance and servicing: investors need reliable information about the instrument and a dependable process for payments, recordkeeping and other obligations over its life.
- Settlement: participants need to know how cash and the bond position move, when a transaction is final, and what happens if a step fails.
- Investor access and protections: easier access or fractionalisation does not by itself guarantee appropriate disclosures, suitability, complaint handling or protection against loss.
- Governance and accountability: there must be clear responsibility for operating the system, correcting errors, managing outages and resolving disputes.
These are questions to resolve for a specific instrument and system. A technology platform can help coordinate records or transactions, but it cannot by itself answer who is legally responsible or what rights an investor can enforce.

When a bond-tokenization proposal is described as “like UPI,” ask what part of the analogy is meant. Is it a shared technical rail, easier onboarding, broader distribution, faster processing, or some combination? Then assess the bond arrangement on its own terms:
- Identify the claim: establish what the token represents and where the investor’s legal rights are documented.
- Trace the lifecycle: find out who issues and services the bond, how payments and ownership records are handled, and how transfers are completed.
- Check the investor route: understand eligibility, disclosures, fees, transfer restrictions and the route for complaints or disputes.
- Test accountability: determine who is responsible if the ledger, platform or a participating service fails, and what recovery process applies.
Until those answers are clear, claims of wider access or faster adoption describe potential benefits, not proof that the market has reached UPI-like scale or reliability.

The RBI circular relevant to this topic concerns card-on-file tokenisation: replacing or protecting card data in payment transactions, with customer-consent and storage requirements. That is a different use of tokenization from creating a digital representation of a bond, and the card circular should not be treated as a bond-tokenization rulebook.
The official materials identified for this article do not establish a current, bond-specific Indian regulatory framework. That does not mean other securities, contract or financial-market rules do not apply. The legal treatment of any offering needs to be assessed against current primary sources and the specific instrument and structure.
