To make an AI image feel like a real film snapshot, describe an ordinary, specific moment first, then add a few compatible cues for framing, light, color, and texture. A scene that feels spontaneous matters more than stacking camera or film-stock names: those names can suggest a look, but they do not guarantee a consistent technical result across generators.
Start with a moment, not a camera label
Give the image generator something ordinary and concrete to capture: who is there, what they are doing, where they are, and when the moment happens. “A candid snapshot” is more convincing when the scene itself feels unposed than when it describes a polished portrait with a retro filter.

For example, two friends laughing in a cramped kitchen after midnight gives the model people, an action, a place, and a social moment to depict. Runway’s Gen-4 Image Prompting Guide also uses a nighttime skate-park scene as a disposable-film example. The shared principle is to anchor the style in a plausible moment.
Describe how the snapshot was captured
Specify the camera’s relationship to the scene rather than relying on a broad word like “realistic.” Say whether the image is close or wide, eye-level or tilted, centered or off-center, and whether the framing is neat or slightly awkward. Name the light source and its quality: direct on-camera flash, window light, or dim available light can each imply a different kind of snapshot.

Adobe’s AI image prompt examples recommends specificity about composition, environment, and aesthetic details; its guide includes camera and framing examples. For a compact indoor scene, “slightly awkward framing” and “direct on-camera flash, hard shadows” communicate more than a camera name alone.
Choose a small set of compatible film cues
After the scene and capture conditions, add a few cues that belong together. A disposable-camera look might combine nighttime flash, a vignette, slight overexposure, and muted color. Runway uses those kinds of descriptors in its disposable-film example. For a more deliberately aged image, its separate damaged-film example uses grain, scratches, light leaks, soft focus, and visible wear.

Keep the amount of wear in proportion to the image you want. “Subtle grain” or “slight overexposure” suggests an everyday snapshot; prominent scratches, dust, leaks, or damage make the image look intentionally distressed. Runway’s guide distinguishes damaged-film and disposable-camera treatments from cinematic styles, so avoid mixing cues that compete. Dramatic anamorphic lighting, carefully controlled professional composition, and shallow depth of field can steer an image toward a cinematic still rather than a casual snapshot.
Build a prompt you can adjust
Use this formula as a starting point:
[Subject and action] + [ordinary setting and moment] + [candid framing] + [light source and quality] + [color and film texture] + [one or two imperfections]

For example, you could adapt this editorial prompt:
A candid snapshot of two friends laughing in a cramped kitchen after midnight, caught mid-conversation with slightly awkward framing; direct on-camera flash, hard shadows, muted warm color, gentle vignette, modest 35mm-style grain, natural expressions, not a polished studio portrait.

Refine one visual dimension at a time
Make a change, generate another image, and compare it with the previous result. Adobe notes that small prompt adjustments can produce dramatically different outputs. Changing just one category at a time helps reveal which instruction is moving the image toward or away from the snapshot look.

- Lighting: Compare direct flash with natural window light or dim available light. Runway’s disposable-camera example specifically combines night flash with a vignette, slight overexposure, and muted color.
- Framing: Try close versus wide, eye-level versus tilted, or centered versus off-center. Use “imperfectly cropped” only if you want the image to feel less composed.
- Color: Ask for muted, warm, or cool color in a way that suits the scene. Treat this as a visual direction, not a guaranteed simulation of a particular stock.
- Texture and wear: Start with subtle grain for a lightly analog feel. Add visible grain, scratches, dust, light leaks, or damage only when you want a more obviously aged result.
- Polish: Words such as “spontaneous” and “candid” support an informal feel. Professional composition, cinematic lighting, and shallow depth of field can pull the result in a more deliberate direction.
What film and camera names can—and cannot—do
A film-stock or camera name can be a useful aesthetic hint, but the official guides cited here do not establish that such labels work as reliable technical controls across image generators. Runway and Adobe provide examples for their own tools, not a controlled comparison across models. Treat the visible instructions—light, framing, color, and texture—as the parts you can deliberately revise, and judge each result rather than assuming a label will produce a particular emulsion or camera response.
Runway’s damaged-film keyword collection describes a look with the phrase “Grainy texture, slightly overexposed, muted colors, visible film scratches, damaged film, light leaks, spontaneous, timeless, soft focus, characteristic Polaroid aesthetic, historical wear and tear.” That is a vendor-provided descriptor list, not evidence that every generator interprets those terms identically. Adobe likewise emphasizes that “Specificity is key when crafting prompts for an AI image generator.”
Keep tool examples current
Runway’s guide supplies Gen-4 prompting examples, while Adobe’s guide documents examples made with Firefly models. They are useful references for how those vendors describe styles, not independent tests comparing services.

For developers using Google’s image-generation APIs, Google’s documentation says Imagen models are shut down and no longer available in the Gemini API. Its page, last updated 2026-09-17 UTC, directs developers to Nano Banana, names gemini-2.5-flash-image and Nano Banana 2 models such as gemini-3.1-flash-image, and describes migration from generate_images to generate_content. Check Google’s image-generation documentation for current availability and migration details before building around a model name, since access and model names can change.
