Open the game’s own product page on the storefront, sign in, and select its wishlist control. Steam and Microsoft Store explicitly support unreleased listings; PlayStation and Nintendo show the control only when the title, region, and storefront surface support it. A wishlist records interest, while a pre-order is a separate purchase decision.
This guide explains exactly where to look on each store, how to check release and sale alerts, what to do when a button is missing, and how to verify an upcoming game’s status before launch. Store interfaces change, so the wording may differ slightly between a console, browser, and mobile app.

What a game wishlist does
A wishlist is a saved list of games you may want to buy. The entry is created from the game’s product page rather than from a general games list, search-results page, or your library. After you save it, the title remains associated with your account so you can find it again when its release date or price changes.

Wishlisting is not a reservation and does not charge you. It also does not guarantee that you will receive every possible alert. Notification delivery depends on the platform, your account settings, verified contact details, the game’s configuration, and regional rules. A pre-order, when offered, is a separate transaction that can involve payment authorization and other purchase terms.

A wishlist is useful even when you are not ready to buy. It is also a quick way to return to the correct product listing instead of relying on an old announcement link.
How the four storefronts differ
| Platform | Where you add the game | Upcoming-game support | Notification behavior documented by the platform | Pre-order relationship |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | The game’s store page in the desktop client or a browser | Steam explicitly allows unreleased and upcoming games to be added | Valve says wishlisted games may trigger release or discount notifications by email or mobile notification, subject to verified email, preferences, and notification limits | Adding a game is only an interest signal; buying it later is separate |
| PlayStation Store | The game’s product page on the web, console, or supported app surface | Depends on whether the listing exposes wishlist and pre-release information in your region and on your device | Check current console and app notification settings; do not assume every wishlist event produces an email or push alert | A page may offer a separate Pre-order action; Sony documents automatic downloads for eligible pre-orders |
| Xbox and Microsoft Store | The game’s Microsoft Store listing from Xbox, the web store, or a supported app | Publicly visible products configured for pre-order or release can be wishlisted | Microsoft documents a consolidated system toast and email when simultaneous wishlist discounts are detected; Xbox sale-alert settings can change | Wishlist status does not itself place an order |
| Nintendo eShop | The game’s eShop product page in your region | Title-specific; Nintendo says not every game is available to pre-order, and some announced games may have no wishlist or pre-order control yet | The Nintendo Store app can offer notifications for releases, sales, upcoming events, and Wish List items when enabled | Pre-order availability and timing vary by title and region |
Across all four stores, the decisive step is opening the individual listing. A game can be widely announced while its store page is still unpublished, private, restricted to another territory, or missing commerce controls. Store pages can also be split by edition, platform, or region, so verify that the listing matches the version you intend to play.
Steam: add an unreleased game to your Wishlist
Save the game
- Sign in to Steam in the desktop client or in a browser.
- Search for the announced game and open its individual store page. An unreleased or upcoming title can have a page even though it cannot yet be purchased.
- Select Add to your Wishlist on the store page. Steam Support identifies this exact control on the left side of a game’s storefront page.
- To review the list, open Store and then Wishlist. You can reorder entries or remove games from the client or browser.
If you are using a browser, check that you are signed in before selecting the control. If Steam sends you to a sign-in screen, return to the product page afterward and confirm that the button changed to show the saved state. The client and browser use the same account list when you are signed in to that account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTurn on the alerts you actually want
Valve’s Steamworks documentation says that players on a game’s wishlist automatically receive a notification when the game releases or goes on discount. That statement describes the intended Steam notification system, not a promise that every account will receive every message. Steam ties delivery to a verified email address, account preferences, and notification limits.
- Verify the email address attached to your Steam account.
- Review Steam’s email and mobile-notification preferences rather than relying on default settings.
- If a release or sale alert is important, check the Wishlist page and the game’s store page directly as launch approaches; a missing message should not be treated as proof that the game did not release or change price.
A notification is also not a purchase instruction. Open the store page from the alert, confirm the release state and edition, and review the current price before buying. If several games are competing for your budget, the Wishlist page lets you compare them without committing to any order.
If the Wishlist button is missing
Confirm that you are on the game’s full store page and signed in to the intended account. A search result, a community page, or a page that has not been published for your region may not expose the control. If the title has been removed, hidden, or restricted, it may no longer behave like a normal wishlist entry.
An announcement may also precede the store listing by weeks or months. Search again later using the exact title and check the developer’s official spelling. If multiple editions appear, open the entry marked for the platform you use; saving a different edition can make later price or release information confusing.

PlayStation Store: use the product page and check the release options
Add the title when the control is available
- Sign in with the PlayStation Network account you use for purchases.
- Search PlayStation Store for the announced game and open its product page, not merely a search tile.
- Choose the page’s wishlist control when it appears. Depending on the console, web page, app, and region, it may be shown as a heart icon or as an Add to Wishlist label. Placement and wording can change as Sony updates each surface.
- Return to the same account’s wishlist view to confirm that the title was saved. If you use more than one PlayStation Network account, check that you did not save it to a different profile.
The web store, console store, and PlayStation app do not always present identical controls at the same time. If you cannot find a heart or label on one surface, search for the same title while signed in on another supported surface. A different appearance does not necessarily mean the game is unavailable; it can reflect a regional catalog or a staged storefront update.
Do not confuse a wishlist with a pre-order
Some upcoming PlayStation listings show a Pre-order button in addition to, or instead of, a visible wishlist control. Sony’s support guidance says you can find a game’s release date by searching for it on PlayStation Store and explains automatic downloads for pre-orders. Selecting Pre-order is therefore a purchase commitment with its own payment, cancellation, and download terms; saving the game to a wishlist is not.
Read the product page’s release date, edition name, included content, and any regional price before pre-ordering. A wishlist lets you wait for reviews, a final release date, or a sale without starting that purchase process. If automatic download matters to you, read Sony’s current pre-order terms and confirm that the transaction is eligible; that behavior belongs to the pre-order, not the wishlist.
Notifications on PlayStation
PlayStation’s wishlist behavior is more dependent on the current surface and region than Steam’s documented release-and-discount flow. Review notification controls on the console and in the PlayStation app, and look for store, release, or price-related categories that are offered to your account. Sony may change which alerts are available, so do not assume that adding a game guarantees an email or push notification.

This catches changes to the date, edition, or regional availability even when no alert arrives. It also prevents confusing a page for a different platform or a similarly named title with the game you intended to follow.
When an upcoming game cannot be wishlisted
A listing may be visible before Sony has enabled all of its commerce features. The missing control can also reflect regional availability, an account restriction, or a difference between the console, web, and app versions. Check the product page again later and verify that the game has been announced for your PlayStation Store region.
Xbox and Microsoft Store: wishlist public pre-release listings
Add the game
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your Xbox profile.
- Open the game’s Microsoft Store listing from the Xbox Store, the web store, or another supported Microsoft Store surface.
- Select Add to wishlist. Capitalization and the exact location of the command can vary between surfaces.
- Open your wishlist and confirm that the same account and region are selected. A title that is visible publicly can remain wishlisted while it is configured for pre-order or a future release.
Microsoft’s Store documentation describes wishlisting for publicly visible products, including products configured for pre-order or release. That makes the wishlist useful before a game is buyable, provided the publisher has made a public listing available.

If the Xbox console does not show the action, try the web listing while signed in to the same Microsoft account. Then verify the region and product identity. Microsoft Store catalogs can differ between territories, and a listing visible on the web may not be offered for purchase on the console in your market yet.
Understand sale notifications
Microsoft documents that simultaneous discounts on wishlist items may be consolidated into one system toast and one email instead of producing a separate message for every game. Consequently, a single alert can represent multiple price changes. Check the wishlist or the individual product pages to see which titles and prices changed.
On Xbox, enable Store or wishlist sale alerts in the notification settings if those categories are offered to your account. Settings and app availability can change, and an alert preference cannot create a notification for a product whose listing is not public or whose regional store does not carry it.
When a sale alert arrives, compare the displayed edition and platform before purchasing. A discount can apply to one product listing while a standard, deluxe, or separate console edition remains at another price. The wishlist is a starting point for that check, not a guarantee that every edition is discounted together.
Common Xbox obstacles
- No Add to wishlist command: make sure the product is publicly visible and that you are signed in; delisted, private, age-restricted, or region-limited listings may not expose the action.
- Different result on console and web: confirm that both surfaces use the same Microsoft account and storefront region. Catalog visibility can differ.
- Unexpected email: a consolidated message may cover several discounted games, so open the wishlist rather than assuming only one title changed.
- Upcoming status changed: a publisher can move a game from an unreleased listing to a purchasable release, delay it, or replace an edition. Reopen the product page to see the current state.
Nintendo eShop: title-specific wishlist and pre-order availability
Save an announced game when the eShop offers the control
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account connected to your console, or open Nintendo eShop in your region.
- Search for the upcoming game and open its complete product page.
- Select the page’s Wish List control when it is available. The exact label and placement can depend on the eShop version and region.
- Confirm that the game appears in the account’s Wish List rather than assuming that opening the page saved it.
Nintendo states that not all games are available to pre-order from Nintendo eShop. An announcement alone therefore does not establish that a title can be pre-ordered, and some listings may not expose a usable wishlist control until Nintendo or the publisher enables it for your market.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not treat the absence of a pre-order button as proof that the game will not launch. It may simply be too early, unavailable in your region, or configured without pre-order sales. Save the title when the Wish List control is present and check the listing again as the release window approaches.
Enable Nintendo Store app notifications
If you use the Nintendo Store app, review its notification settings and enable the categories that matter to you. Nintendo identifies notifications for releases, sales, upcoming events, and Wish List items. The categories shown can vary by app version, account, and region, so check the current settings rather than relying on an old setup.

App notifications complement, rather than replace, checking the eShop. A notification can point you back to a listing, but the current date, edition, price, and purchase availability are shown on that listing. Make sure the app is signed in to the Nintendo Account that owns the Wish List.
Recheck close to launch
Release dates, pre-order windows, editions, and regional availability can change. Reopen the eShop listing near launch to confirm the date and whether the title is now purchasable or offers a pre-order. A saved Wish List entry is useful for finding the page again, but it does not freeze the publisher’s schedule or guarantee a specific price.
Wishlist versus pre-order: the decision that matters
| Action | What it records | What it does not do | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wishlist | Your interest in a game’s listing | It does not buy the game, reserve stock, lock a price, or guarantee an alert | Use it while waiting for a release date, reviews, system requirements, a regional listing, or a discount |
| Pre-order | A purchase request for an eligible upcoming edition | It is not merely a reminder and can carry payment, cancellation, and download terms | Use it only after checking the edition, date, price, refund rules, and any automatic-download behavior |
On PlayStation, Sony specifically documents automatic downloads for pre-orders. That feature belongs to the pre-order transaction, not to wishlist status. Other stores may have different delivery and payment rules; read the product page before confirming a purchase.
Choosing a wishlist first is sensible when the release date is uncertain, the edition details are incomplete, or you want to wait for reviews. Choosing a pre-order is a separate decision that should follow a review of the current terms, not simply the arrival of a notification.
Why an upcoming game may not be wish-listable
- The publisher has not published a storefront product page. A trailer, announcement, or social post is not the same as a public store listing.
- The listing is not enabled in your region. Store catalogs and release dates can differ by country or territory.
- The platform has not enabled the feature for that title. Nintendo explicitly makes pre-order availability title-specific, and PlayStation controls can differ by surface.
- You are viewing the wrong surface or account. Switch from a search tile to the full product page and verify the signed-in account.
- The title has changed status. A game can be delayed, renamed, delisted, or replaced by a different edition, leaving an old page without the expected control.
- The product is not publicly visible. Microsoft’s documented wishlist flow depends on a publicly visible Store product; private or restricted listings may not offer the command.
- The store is showing another version. Separate editions, platforms, and regional pages can have different dates and controls.
When troubleshooting, first verify the account, then the full product page, then the region and platform. If all three are correct, revisit the listing later rather than using an unofficial page as a substitute. Store controls can appear after a publisher finishes its product setup.
A cross-platform launch-day check
- Open the saved entry on the platform where you added it and verify the current release date.
- Check whether the game is now purchasable, still listed as upcoming, or offered for pre-order.
- Compare the edition name and region before paying; deluxe and standard editions can have separate pages.
- Review the platform’s notification settings so a disabled email, mobile, toast, or app category does not hide a message you expected.
- If no entry or control appears, search again from the storefront while signed in. Do not infer availability from a listing in another country or on another platform.
- Read the product page again for changed dates, included content, and the current price. A release announcement or old notification may no longer reflect the live listing.
The practical rule is simple: save the game from its own listing, treat the wishlist as an interest tracker, and make a separate, informed decision if a pre-order becomes available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wishlist a game before it is available to buy?
Often, yes. Steam explicitly supports upcoming and unreleased store pages, and Microsoft documents wishlisting for publicly visible products configured for pre-order or release. PlayStation and Nintendo depend on the specific listing, region, and storefront surface. If the product page has no wishlist control, the publisher or platform may not have enabled it yet.
Best Value
Will wishlisting automatically pre-order the game?
No. A wishlist records interest and does not charge you, reserve a copy, lock a price, or place an order. A pre-order is a separate purchase action with its own payment, cancellation, and download terms.
Will I always get an email when a wishlisted game launches?
No platform guarantees every possible alert in every account and region. Steam documents release and discount notifications subject to verified email, preferences, and notification limits. Microsoft documents consolidated toast and email alerts for simultaneous wishlist discounts. PlayStation settings vary, while Nintendo Store app users can enable release, sale, event, and Wish List categories.
Why can I see an announcement but not a wishlist button?
An announcement is not necessarily a public store listing. The page may not be published in your region, the feature may not be enabled for that title, or you may be viewing a search tile, another edition, or the wrong account. Try the complete product page and check again later.
Does a wishlist lock today’s price?
No. Prices can change, and a discount may apply only to a particular edition or regional listing. Use the wishlist to find the page again, then confirm the live price before buying.
Can I wishlist a game on one platform and receive alerts on another?
Wishlists are tied to the account and storefront where you saved the product. A Steam wishlist does not substitute for a PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo list. Save the game on each platform you may use and check each platform’s notification settings.
What should I check before pre-ordering?
Confirm the exact edition, platform, release date, region, included content, current price, refund or cancellation terms, and any automatic-download behavior. On PlayStation, Sony documents automatic downloads for eligible pre-orders; that feature is separate from wishlist status.
Why did one Xbox email mention several games?
Microsoft says simultaneous wishlist discounts may be consolidated into one system toast and one email. Open the wishlist or each product page to identify all affected games and their current prices.

Open the game’s own listing, sign in to the right account and region, and use the wishlist control when the store provides it. Steam and Microsoft explicitly support many unreleased listings; PlayStation and Nintendo are more dependent on title, region, and surface. Keep notifications enabled, but verify the live product page yourself. A wishlist is a reminder—not a purchase, reservation, guaranteed alert, or fixed price.
