What wishlisting does on Steam
A Steam wishlist is an account-level list of games you may want to buy or play later. For an unreleased PC game, adding it is both a way to bookmark the store page and the condition Steam uses for certain release and discount alerts. The list is attached to your Steam account, not to a particular browser, computer, or phone.

The important timing rule is that you must still have the game wishlisted when the relevant event occurs. Steamworks documentation states: “When your game releases, either in Early Access or as Full Release, any user that has the game on their wishlist at that time will receive an e-mail and/or mobile push notification about the game being available.” Removing the game before launch means it no longer meets that condition.
Wishlisting is not a purchase, pre-order, or reservation. It does not charge you, install anything, or guarantee a copy. It simply keeps the title in your account’s wishlist and makes you eligible for the notifications Steam documents.

What you need before adding a game
- A Steam account you can sign in to.
- The publicly visible Steam store page for the upcoming game.
- Access to the account’s email address if you want email alerts; Steamworks requires a verified email account for email messages.
- The Steam mobile app and permission for its notifications if you want mobile push alerts.
You can use the Steam website, desktop client, or mobile app. Whichever device you use, sign in to the same account that should receive the alert. A wishlist created while signed out cannot be tied to the account that will eventually play the game.
How to wishlist an upcoming game
- Sign in first. Use the Steam account that should own the wishlist entry and receive notifications. If a browser, desktop client, or mobile app is showing another account, switch accounts before continuing.
- Open the game’s public Steam store page. Use the page for the exact title you want to follow. Check the name and store listing so you do not add a similarly named game or a different edition.
- Select “Add to your wishlist.” The button on the store page adds the title to the signed-in account’s list. This is the action that enables the documented release and qualifying-discount notifications.
- Verify the entry. Steam Support says you can open the list by signing in, hovering over Store, and choosing Wishlist. Find the game in that list. Seeing it there confirms that the account—not merely the current device—has the entry.
- Leave it wishlisted through the event you care about. For a launch alert, keep the game on the list until it becomes available. For a later full-release alert, keep it there while it remains in Early Access and through the transition to full release.
Once the title appears in your wishlist, you do not need to keep the store page open. You can close Steam or change devices; the list remains associated with the account. Return to the wishlist when you want to check whether the entry is still present.
When Steam sends a release notification
Steam documents two availability events that can trigger a message for people who still have the game wishlisted at the time of the event:

A game that launches in Early Access can therefore produce one availability alert at its Early Access release and another when it moves to full release, provided it remains on your wishlist. The documentation describes these as launch-availability triggers; it does not promise a separate reminder before the developer’s scheduled date.
Email, mobile push, or the wishlist page?
Steam gives you three practical ways to stay aware of an upcoming title. They serve different purposes rather than replacing one another.

Steam’s wording is “and/or,” so receiving an email does not mean a push notification must also arrive, or vice versa. If you want the best chance of seeing an alert, keep both channels available: maintain a verified email address, leave the relevant email preferences enabled, install the mobile app, and allow its notifications.
How discount notifications work
Steam’s notification documentation says wishlisted games can generate email or mobile-app notifications when they are Daily Deals, Midweek Deals, or Weekend Deals. Steamworks adds conditions for a discount to qualify: the price reduction must be at least 20 percent, the lowest-priced package must be discounted, and the discount must last more than eight hours.
Those conditions describe eligibility for the documented discount notification; they do not mean every price change will produce an alert. A smaller discount, a discount on a package that is not the lowest-priced package, or a promotion lasting eight hours or less does not meet all of the stated conditions. Keep the game wishlisted when the promotion begins if you want to be eligible.
Discount alerts are separate from the release trigger. A game can notify you about a qualifying sale before launch, at launch, or later. The release notification is tied to availability in Early Access or full release; the discount notification is tied to the qualifying promotion conditions.
There may be no notification before the release date
The Steam documentation reviewed for this workflow describes a notification when the game becomes available, not a guaranteed countdown email or advance reminder on the announced date. If a developer changes its schedule, do not rely on the wishlist alone to learn about the change. Follow the developer or publisher’s own announcements for date updates and earlier news.

This distinction explains why a game can be visible on your wishlist for months without producing any message. Nothing is missing merely because the scheduled date has not arrived. The documented trigger occurs when the game actually releases in Early Access or full release.
Why a release notification might be missing
The email address is not verified
Steamworks says customers must have a verified email account to receive email messages. Check the email address associated with the Steam account and complete Steam’s verification process if it is pending. Until the address is verified, an email release alert should not be expected.
Email or mobile notifications are disabled
Steam’s notification guidance says users can opt out of email or turn off mobile notifications. Review the account’s email preferences and the Steam mobile app’s notification permissions. On a phone, also check the operating system’s app-level permission; a message can be generated by Steam but hidden when the app is not allowed to notify.
The game was removed from the wishlist
Release alerts are for users who have the game wishlisted at the time it releases. Reopen the Wishlist page and confirm the title is still present. If you removed it before the release event, adding it again later may not recreate an alert for an event that has already happened.
You are checking a different account
The wishlist belongs to the signed-in account. If the game appears on the website but not in the desktop client, or appears on one phone but not another, check the account identity in each place. Sign out and back in with the account that originally received the wishlist entry, then open Store and choose Wishlist to verify it.

Email delivery is delayed or filtered
Steamworks warns that customers notified about an app ID within the previous two weeks may be subject to an email cooldown. It also notes that high-volume periods can delay delivery. Check the inbox’s spam, junk, promotions, and filtered folders, but do not assume an immediate second email will arrive if Steam recently sent a notification for the same app ID.
You are looking only in one channel
Because Steam may send email and/or mobile push, inspect both the account email inbox and the Steam mobile app notification feed. A missing email does not prove that no push alert was sent, and a missing push alert does not prove that no email was delivered.

Use this checklist before an anticipated release and again if you think the game has launched:
- Sign in to the Steam account you intend to use.
- Open Store, select Wishlist, and confirm the exact game is listed.
- Confirm the account email address is verified.
- Review Steam email notification preferences and ensure you have not opted out.
- Open the Steam mobile app and ensure mobile notifications are enabled both in the app and on the phone.
- Check the account inbox, including spam or filtered folders, and the mobile app notification feed.
- If Steam recently notified you about the same app ID, allow for the documented two-week email cooldown and possible high-volume delays.
This checklist separates eligibility from delivery. The wishlist entry determines whether you qualify for the launch event; verified contact details, preferences, app permissions, and delivery timing determine where and when you see the message.

Use it as the source of truth for titles you still want to follow
Because the release rule checks the wishlist at the moment of availability, periodically scan the list and remove only games you no longer want to track. Leaving a title there preserves your eligibility for a later Early Access-to-full-release message and for qualifying sale notifications.
Check status manually when timing matters
The wishlist page is useful when you need to confirm whether a title is still being followed. It does not replace an announcement channel for schedule changes, and Steam’s documented release alert is not a promise of an advance reminder. For a date-sensitive launch, combine the wishlist with announcements from the developer or publisher.
Understand what a notification does not guarantee
A notification says that Steam considers the game available or that a qualifying promotion has occurred. It does not guarantee that the game will be playable on every PC, that a particular edition is included, or that a sale will remain available after you open the message. Those decisions still belong to you on the store page.
Common questions about Steam wishlists and alerts
Do I have to keep Steam open?
No. The wishlist is tied to your Steam account, so you can close the website or client and return later. For a mobile push alert, the app and phone permissions must be configured; for email, the account needs a verified address and enabled email notifications.

No advance reminder is guaranteed by the documented behavior. Steam describes a message when the game becomes available in Early Access or at full release. Schedule changes and earlier announcements should be followed through the developer or publisher.
Can one game notify me twice?
It can generate an availability notification at an Early Access release and another when it transitions to full release, as long as it remains on your wishlist. Steamworks specifically documents another email for users who still have the title wishlisted at that transition.
Why did I get a sale alert but not a launch alert?
Discount and release alerts use different triggers. A sale alert requires the documented discount conditions, while a launch alert depends on the game becoming available and remaining wishlisted at that moment. Check the wishlist entry, verified email status, notification preferences, mobile permissions, and both delivery channels.

Sign in, open the game’s Steam store page, choose Add to your wishlist, and verify the title under Store → Wishlist. Keep it there through launch.
