There is no single wiring map for every Honeywell Home smart thermostat. Find the exact model number and identify whether your HVAC system is conventional or a heat pump before moving any wires. Follow that model’s installation guide—not a generic terminal chart—and turn off HVAC power first.
Before wiring: identify the thermostat and HVAC system
Check the thermostat’s model number and obtain its installation guide. For example, Resideo publishes separate guides for the Honeywell Home T9 and RTH9580. Their wiring instructions and power requirements are model-specific.

Determine whether the equipment is a conventional heating-and-cooling system or a heat pump. The RTH9580 guide shows these as different applications and cautions that actual wiring may differ from its examples. If the equipment type or its terminals do not match the guide, stop rather than adapting a diagram by guesswork.
Make the installation safe and preserve the existing wiring
- Turn off HVAC power. The T9 guide states, “Disconnect power before beginning installation.” It warns of electric shock or equipment damage. Switch off the system at its breaker or service switch before handling thermostat wiring.
- Record the existing connections. Before removing wires, note which terminal each wire is connected to. Use terminal labels—not wire color—as your reference when following the new thermostat’s guide.
- Compare the old connections with the exact model guide. Do not proceed if the terminal labels, system type, or equipment configuration do not correspond to the guide’s instructions.
Wire color alone cannot reliably identify a function. The T9 guide specifically says there is no universal color for the C-wire, so do not assume a wire is C based on its color.

Check the C-wire requirement for your model
Honeywell Home T9
The T9 guide says a C-wire is required to provide 24 VAC power. It describes the C-wire as running from the heating/cooling system to the thermostat’s C terminal. If a C-wire is absent, the guide describes using the C-wire adapter provided for the T9 installation. Follow that guide’s adapter instructions exactly; do not treat an adapter as a universal solution for other thermostats or systems.
Honeywell Home RTH9580
The RTH9580 guide also requires a C-wire, but it is a separate model with its own wiring instructions for conventional and heat-pump systems. Do not transfer the T9’s adapter route or terminal assumptions to the RTH9580.

Check compatibility before connecting anything
The T9 guide says the thermostat works with most heating-and-cooling and heat-pump systems, but lists important exclusions. It does not work with 120–240 V electric baseboard heat or millivolt systems, and it does not support S terminals for indoor or outdoor sensors.
- If your equipment is one of these excluded types, do not wire it as though it were a supported low-voltage system.
- If your model guide does not match the terminals or equipment you have, stop and consult an authorized HVAC professional.
- Resideo’s T9 product page directs customers to find a professional and links to product resources. Check the page and your model’s documentation for current installation and availability details.
Why a generic Honeywell wiring diagram is risky
“Honeywell smart thermostat” covers more than one model, and even a model’s guide may show examples that do not match every installation. The T9 and RTH9580 illustrate why it matters to verify the model, system type, terminals, and C-wire arrangement together. A diagram for another thermostat—or a conventional system when yours is a heat pump—can lead to incorrect connections or equipment damage.

When the exact guide does not clearly cover your setup, leave the wiring untouched and ask a qualified HVAC professional to identify the system and make the connection.
