Renaming the database is safer than deleting it because you can roll back if the result is not what you intended.

What a Conan Exiles world wipe actually does
A wipe is a database reset. The server stores the world state in a map-specific database, including placed structures, containers, discoveries, map progress and other persistent objects. Removing that database gives the server no existing world to load, so it generates a fresh one at the next startup.

Do not assume that deleting game.db wipes a Siptah server, or that deleting dlc_siptah.db affects Exiled Lands. Confirm the active map in the server configuration or host panel before changing anything.

What is lost
For a normal private-server wipe, treat all database-backed progression as disposable. Placed buildings, bases, containers, map discoveries, world items and other saved structures are lost when the active database is replaced. Player progression stored in that database can also be lost.
Characters are not guaranteed to survive
Do not promise players that their characters, levels, inventories or followers will remain. Funcom’s Unreal Engine 4-to-Unreal Engine 5 migration guidance describes a particular migration behavior in which characters could retain level, inventory and followers while bases and placed world items did not transfer. That is migration-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every private-server wipe. Your server’s save format, version, provider backup policy and plugins can change the outcome.
Prepare before stopping the server
A wipe is destructive even when it is performed correctly. Decide what “fresh” means and make a recoverable copy before touching the live files.

- Announce downtime: Tell players when the server will stop and that the old world may not return.
- Confirm no one is connected: A player who is saving while you copy or rename files can leave an inconsistent backup.
- Identify the map: Establish whether the server is running Exiled Lands or Isle of Siptah and note the matching database filename.
- Record the current configuration: Keep copies or screenshots of multipliers, difficulty settings, passwords, admin lists and launch options you intend to restore.
- Inventory your mods: Note the load order and versions. A fresh database does not make an incompatible mod combination safe.
- Choose a rollback location: Store the backup outside the live
Saveddirectory, with a date and a description of the map.
Stop the server before copying, renaming or deleting any database. A running ConanSandboxServer.exe process can still write to the file, and changing it during a save can corrupt the world or make your backup unusable.
Windows dedicated server: complete wipe procedure
The following procedure applies to a standard Steam Windows dedicated-server installation. A hosting provider may use a different root path, but the file names and order of operations remain the same.
- Stop the process. Use the provider’s stop control or stop
ConanSandboxServer.exefrom the service manager. Wait until the process has exited and the console is no longer writing saves. - Open the save directory. In a typical Steam installation, browse to
SteamLibrarysteamappscommonConan Exiles Dedicated ServerConanSandboxSaved. The Windows server configuration is normally underSavedConfigWindowsServer. - Make a full backup. Copy the entire
Saveddirectory to a separate, dated folder such asD:ConanBackups2026-10-14-before-wipe-exiled-landsSaved. A full copy preserves configuration, logs and automatic backups as well as the active database. - Preserve the active database explicitly. At minimum, include
game.dbordlc_siptah.dband every file named likegame_backup_##.db. Verify that the copied files have non-zero sizes and that the copy is outside the live save path. - Back up mods when present. Copy
ConanSandboxMods, including the mod list and package files, into the same dated backup set. A database backup without the corresponding mod state may not be reproducible. - Rename the map database. For Exiled Lands, rename
game.dbto a clear name such asgame.db.before-wipe-2026-10-14. For Siptah, renamedlc_siptah.dbsimilarly. You can instead move the file outsideSaved; renaming in place makes the intended operation easy to audit. - Start the server. Launch the service normally. Because the expected database filename is absent, the server should create a new empty database for the active map.
- Verify file creation. If you want a controlled check, stop the server again after startup and confirm that a newly dated
game.dbordlc_siptah.dbexists. Do not invite players until the fresh world has loaded successfully. - Reapply settings deliberately. Restore only the configuration and mods you have chosen for the new season. Avoid blindly copying an old database over the new one, which would undo the wipe.
- Test as an administrator. Join with an administrator account, check that the spawn area is empty, confirm expected rates and rules, and test a basic save/restart cycle before opening the server.
Linux servers
The Linux operation is the same database reset, but installation paths and service controls vary. Stop the service using the command or panel supplied by your distribution or host, then verify that the server process has ended.

- Locate the server’s
ConanSandbox/Saveddirectory. - Copy the complete
Saveddirectory to dated storage. - Copy
ConanSandbox/Modsas well when the server is modded. - Rename the active map database, usually
game.dbfor Exiled Lands ordlc_siptah.dbfor Siptah, or move it outside the save directory. - Start the service and watch its console or log for database creation and world loading.
- Stop and restore the preserved database if startup fails, then inspect the server log before trying again.
The Linux setup guidance explicitly warns that removing the database erases progression and saved buildings. Treat a Linux wipe as equally destructive to a Windows wipe; the operating system changes the path and service commands, not the data consequence.
Rented and hosted servers
Hosted interfaces do not share one universal menu. Use the host’s stop control first, then its file manager, FTP/SFTP access or support ticket to reach the Conan save directory. Some providers expose a “wipe” button; others require you to delete the database manually.
When a host offers only a delete operation, download the database and the surrounding Saved and Mods directories before confirming it. If the panel can create snapshots, make a snapshot and record its timestamp. Ask support which map file is active if the panel obscures the filename. Never assume that a generic “reset server” action preserves a rollback copy.

Provider backup systems can also restore an old database automatically after a crash or reinstall. If the old world returns, check whether an automated restore or scheduled backup ran between your file change and startup.
Rename or permanently delete?

Renaming is the safer default because the server ignores the renamed file while your rollback copy remains immediately available. Do not leave two files with the same active filename in the save directory; the server can load only the expected name, and a provider’s restore tool may choose a different copy.

Vanilla reset
For an unmodded server, back up Saved, rename the correct map database, start the server and test the new world. Keep the old configuration only if you want the same rules; configuration files do not contain the old map’s buildings.

Modded reset
A new database does not remove mod files, load-order entries or references that a mod has written into the old world. Removing a mod while continuing to use the old database can leave incompatible data. If the goal is a genuinely clean modded start:

Modsdirectory. - Decide which mods remain and install or update those versions before opening the new world.
- Remove obsolete entries from the mod list rather than deleting files at random.
- Start with the selected load order and test crafting, structures and server saves with an administrator account.
- If the server fails, stop it and restore the preserved database and known-good mod list before diagnosing one change at a time.
Do not use a mod cleanup as a substitute for a world wipe. Conversely, do not expect a world wipe to repair an incompatible mod installation.
Rolling back to the old world
Automatic backups commonly use names such as game_backup_##.db. The Conan Exiles wiki describes automatic saves as normally about five minutes apart, but the exact interval and retention depend on the server and provider. Use timestamps and the known event time rather than assuming the newest file is correct.
- Stop the server completely.
- Preserve the current post-wipe database by renaming it, for example
game.db.failed-wipe-2026-10-14. - Choose a known-good full database backup, either your dated copy or a suitable
game_backup_##.db. - Copy or rename that backup to the exact active filename:
game.dbfor Exiled Lands ordlc_siptah.dbfor Siptah. - Start the server and verify the expected structures and player state before allowing connections.
If the selected automatic backup predates an important build or save, choose another timestamp. Never overwrite the only preserved copy while experimenting with rollback.
Troubleshooting after the wipe

Final pre-opening checklist
- The server process is stopped before file changes.
- The active map and matching database filename are confirmed.
- A dated copy of
Savedis stored outside the live directory. - The
Modsdirectory and mod list are backed up when applicable. - The old database is renamed or moved rather than permanently deleted unless destruction is intentional.
- A newly created database is present after startup.
- An administrator has checked the empty spawn area, settings, mods and a save/restart cycle.
- The rollback database remains untouched until the new season is accepted.
Once these checks pass, announce the server as open and tell players exactly what was reset. If you need the old world later, stop the server before restoring the preserved database; never swap live save files while the process is running.
