Start with the model’s left/right markings, then adjust the position in small increments until the earbuds stay put without pinching. The right placement varies by design and ear shape; clamping harder is not the goal.
How to put on clip-on open-ear earbuds
- Check the sides and orientation. Look for left/right markings and follow your model’s instructions. On soundcore AeroClip, the sound outlet faces the canal and the battery compartment sits behind the ear; wearing the sides backward can affect sound or calls. - Rest the bridge on the outer ear. Clip-on designs do not all sit at the same point. TCL advises placing its earbuds on the middle of the auricle above the concha, rather than on the earlobe; soundcore says AeroClip’s bridge should rest along the outer cartilage. Follow the location shown for your own model, not another brand’s instructions. TCL’s placement guidance and soundcore’s AeroClip instructions give these model-specific examples.
- Aim the outlet toward the canal opening. The outlet should point toward the opening so sound reaches your ear, but it should remain outside the canal if the product is designed to be worn open-ear.
- Make small adjustments. Move the earbud slightly up or down, or gently change its angle, until it feels stable and comfortable. HUAWEI suggests adjusting the FreeClip C-bridge until it is roughly parallel to the ground for a typical fit, then shifting the bridge and comfort bean to suit your ear. That orientation is specific to FreeClip. HUAWEI FreeClip wearing guidance.
- Test the fit in motion. Turn your head and walk briefly. If an earbud wobbles, readjust it before relying on it during activity. A stable fit during a short check does not establish that every clip-on model suits every workout.
Fix pinching, slipping, or weak sound
If they pinch or become sore
Try a small change in position or angle rather than tightening the clip. Do not pull, twist, or overbend the bridge: soundcore warns that excessive stretching or bending can damage its AeroClip. If discomfort continues, take the earbuds off instead of forcing a fit. For long wear, HUAWEI advises removing FreeClip and gently massaging the ears.

If they feel loose or slip
First check that the sides are not reversed and that the bridge is resting on the outer-ear area intended for your model. Ear shape and movement can affect stability. For soundcore AeroClip specifically, M and L ear grips are listed as options for users who find the earbuds loose or not snug. Check your exact model and package contents; those grips should not be assumed to fit other brands. soundcore’s AeroClip ear-grip information.
If they shift during exercise
For HUAWEI FreeClip, the manufacturer recommends moving the comfort bean lower and toward the back and positioning the C-bridge about 30 degrees from horizontal before a workout. Sweat can also contribute to slipping, so HUAWEI recommends wiping it off promptly. These are FreeClip-specific adjustments, not a universal angle for clip-on earbuds. If sound seems muffled or weak
Check that the left and right earbuds are correctly oriented and that each outlet points toward the canal opening. Clip-ons leave the ear canal unsealed, so they will not sound or isolate like sealed in-ear earbuds. soundcore notes that an open fit can mean more outside noise, lighter bass, and some sound leakage; aiming the outlet closer to the canal opening may improve what you hear, but it cannot create a seal. soundcore’s explanation of open-ear sound and leakage.
If everyday tasks dislodge them
HUAWEI says FreeClip can come loose when flipping hair, wearing a scarf or face mask, sleeping, or brushing teeth. If that happens, remove the earbuds and put them on again. This list describes situations noted for FreeClip, not every model. HUAWEI FreeClip support.

What an open-ear fit can—and cannot—do
Clip-on open-ear earbuds sit outside the canal, leaving it unsealed and preserving access to surrounding sound. That can be useful when you want to remain aware of your environment, but it also means they cannot block outside noise like a sealed in-ear fit. Bass may sound lighter, and people nearby may hear some leakage. Better positioning can direct sound toward your ear; it cannot eliminate those trade-offs.
Fit and durability are separate considerations. soundcore says AeroClip’s flexible memory-titanium core has been tested to withstand 20,000 bends. What to check when choosing a clip-on model
- Bridge design and adjustment: check how the clip rests on the ear and what adjustments its maker recommends.
- Included fit accessories: confirm sizes and package contents for the exact model and market; accessories for one brand may not fit another.
- Intended activity: look for the manufacturer’s guidance for movement or exercise rather than assuming a secure everyday fit guarantees a workout fit.
- Return or exchange terms: because ear shapes and comfort vary, check the seller’s policy before buying if you are unsure about fit.
