If a show leaves Netflix or another streaming service, it may still be available elsewhere. Search for the exact title in your country, confirm the offer on the provider’s own page, then compare subscription, free ad-supported, rental, purchase, and official DVD or Blu-ray options. Availability changes by title and region, so verify before you pay.
Why shows leave streaming services
Streaming services license many shows for a limited period. As Netflix Help Center explains, “some titles do leave Netflix because of licensing agreements.” When a license expires, the service considers whether rights remain available, a title’s popularity in a region, and licensing cost. - Note the exact series title and your country. Similar titles, spin-offs, and regional rights can lead to different results.
- Search a legal availability guide. JustWatch says it lists paid subscriptions, free and ad-supported streaming, rentals, and purchases, and lets you filter for services you already use. - Open the provider’s own listing. Check the seasons and episodes included, whether viewing is part of a subscription or costs extra, and the current price or rental terms before committing.
- Compare the available options. An existing subscription or free ad-supported offer may cost less than adding a service. If those are unavailable, compare a rental, digital purchase, or official disc release.

Can you download a show after it leaves?
A download inside a streaming app is for offline viewing under that service’s rules; it is not an independent copy that guarantees continued access after a title leaves the catalog. Download eligibility and availability depend on the title and provider.

Google says eligible purchases appear in the buyer’s library and can be watched on supported devices. YouTube also supports offline downloads of purchased movies and TV shows on supported mobile devices when using the same Google account. Rental downloads remain subject to the rental period, and the checkout page states the applicable viewing window. Can you buy a show on DVD if it leaves streaming?
Sometimes. An official DVD or Blu-ray set can keep you from relying on a streaming catalog, but not every show has a disc release, and editions do not necessarily contain every season. Universal Pictures At Home currently lists complete-series sets for Downton Abbey, Suits, and House; those examples do not establish that another series is available on disc. Before buying, verify the exact show and edition, all seasons and episodes, language or subtitle options, disc format and region, and whether your player supports them. Choose an authorized release rather than an unofficial copy.
What to do if no current offer appears
Recheck the provider’s own listing and the availability guide later; catalogs and licensing arrangements can change. Wait for a return only if the provider confirms one—an expired license alone does not establish when, or whether, a show will return. If you need access now, consider another currently listed legal offer rather than assuming the former service still has it or that a download will remain playable.
