Do not assume that a video service you use at home will work in mainland China. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) lists YouTube among services that are permanently blocked, and Australian travel advice warns that access to many foreign websites and social-media services is limited. Check your preferred services and specific titles before relying on them, and treat local platforms such as iQIYI as options to investigate rather than guaranteed substitutes.
Can you watch foreign video platforms in mainland China?
Access to foreign services may be restricted. The UK FCDO’s China travel advice specifically names YouTube among services that are permanently blocked. The Australian government’s Smartraveller China advice says access to many foreign websites and social-media services is limited.
These official advisories support expecting access problems, but they are not a complete, real-time list of every video platform. They do not establish whether a particular service will work on every network, in every location, or at every moment. Check current official travel guidance close to your trip, and do not plan around an assumption that a familiar app will be reachable.
How to choose a service to investigate
Locally oriented services may be worth checking. iQIYI is one candidate: its SEC-filed annual report describes the licensing and content-regulation environment in which it operates. That corporate filing does not confirm visitor account eligibility, payment options, current titles, subtitles, audio languages, or app support. Tencent Video and Youku are also services a traveler could investigate, but current consumer access details are not established here.

Before choosing a service, verify these details directly with the provider:
- Location and title: whether the service can be accessed from where you will be, and whether the specific program or film is available there.
- Account requirements: whether visitors can register and whether identity or phone verification is required.
- Payment: which payment methods are accepted and what the subscription terms are.
- Languages: whether the title has the subtitle and audio languages you need.
- Catalog: whether the service carries enough of the content you want to watch.
- Device support: whether the current app or website supports your device and is accessible in your location.
What to know about VPNs and bypassing restrictions
Do not treat a VPN or other circumvention service as a guaranteed way to reach a blocked platform or as automatically free of legal risk. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Smartraveller advice warns: “The use of services to bypass local internet restrictions may be illegal and can attract penalties, including imprisonment.” This is a traveler-facing caution, not a definitive ruling on every tool or individual use. Consult current official travel guidance and qualified local advice if you need to understand your situation.

This is mainly a question of service availability, account access, and content selection. The available information does not establish that you need a particular streaming device, router, or other physical product. Confirm the service, title, language, payment, and device details before relying on a platform during your stay.
