You can’t assume a VPN will make a US streaming service available in France or unlock its US catalog. YouTube TV says it is available only in the United States, while Netflix says VPN use may limit viewing to titles licensed worldwide. Check the rules for the particular service and program before subscribing or troubleshooting access.
Can you watch US TV services from France?
It depends on the service, your account eligibility, and the rights for the program you want. A subscription alone does not guarantee access to every show, sports event, device, or location.

YouTube TV
Google says YouTube TV is available only in the United States. It also says the viewer’s current location affects which programs and channels are available. A VPN does not change the service’s stated availability policy.

Netflix
Netflix says each country has its own catalog of original and licensed shows and films. Netflix also says the account country cannot be changed unless the subscriber moves. A VPN is not a promise of access to the US catalog.

What can a VPN change?
A VPN can make a device or network appear to connect from a different location, but that does not guarantee a streaming service will accept the connection or show a particular catalog. Netflix says VPN use may restrict viewing to titles it can show worldwide; it does not support VPNs for live events or ad-supported viewing. See Netflix’s VPN guidance for its current details.
There is no provider ranking, success rate, or speed result established here. Those claims require dated, repeatable tests on specified services, devices, plans, locations, and connections. Treat claims that a particular VPN reliably unlocks US TV as unverified unless they include that evidence.

Does EU portability let France residents use US subscriptions?
No. EU portability rules concern an eligible paid online-content subscription used while its subscriber temporarily travels to another EU country. The European Commission’s portability guidance and its FAQ distinguish temporary travel from a resident seeking to subscribe to another country’s service. The rules do not require US services to offer subscriptions to France residents.

What to check before you subscribe or travel
- Availability: Confirm whether the service officially serves France or restricts access to the United States.
- Account eligibility: Check residence, signup, and account-country rules with the service; they can differ by provider.
- Program rights: A service may have rights to a channel or title in one place but not another. Google notes that YouTube TV restrictions can depend on location, program, platform, or device; see its program-availability guidance.
- Travel changes: Netflix says title selection, audio and subtitle options, and downloads can differ outside the signup country.
- VPN restrictions: For Netflix, account for the stated limits on worldwide-licensed titles, live events, and ad-supported viewing before relying on a VPN.
- Device and event limits: Verify that the exact device, channel, and live event are supported in your location; access to one part of a service does not establish access to all of it.
A practical way to decide
- Identify the exact service and program, rather than assuming all “US TV” has the same rules.
- Read the service’s availability and account terms for France, including any restrictions for live or ad-supported viewing.
- If you are traveling, check whether your existing subscription qualifies for EU portability; do not treat portability as a way to obtain a US subscription while resident in France.
- If considering a VPN, treat it as a possible network-location tool, not a guarantee. Confirm the service’s own VPN policy and avoid assuming a particular provider works without current, service-specific evidence.
