ITVX and BBC iPlayer do not offer their UK streaming catalogues to viewers in Canada. ITV says live and on-demand ITVX programmes cannot be streamed outside the UK; BBC guidance likewise limits iPlayer to the UK. The practical exception is watching eligible programmes downloaded before travel: ITVX Premium downloads and qualifying BBC iPlayer downloads have separate expiry rules.
Can you stream ITVX or BBC iPlayer in Canada?
No—not according to the services’ current guidance. ITV Help states, “Unfortunately you can’t stream live or on demand shows on ITVX when you’re outside of the UK.” Its guidance was modified on 15 October 2025. BBC Help says, “iPlayer is only available in the UK, and access is tied to a valid UK TV licence.” See ITV Help’s overseas viewing guidance and BBC Help’s iPlayer and subscription guidance.

A UK TV Licence is a requirement for iPlayer use in the UK; it does not grant permission to stream iPlayer from Canada. TV Licensing says iPlayer programmes cannot be streamed or downloaded while abroad. That restriction is different from viewing a qualifying programme downloaded before leaving the UK.

What you can watch after downloading before travel
| Service and situation | What the guidance allows | Time limit or conditions |
|---|---|---|
| ITVX Premium download made in the UK | Watch eligible downloaded programmes offline abroad on an Android or iOS device. | Download expires after seven days; once playback begins, finish within 48 hours. | BBC iPlayer download made before leaving the UK | TV Licensing says qualifying programmes downloaded before travel may be watched overseas. | Usually available for 30 days after the programme is shown live. The period is described as usual, not a guarantee for every programme. TV Licensing guidance |

How to prepare eligible ITVX downloads
This option is for a specific programme you download while still in the UK, not a way to browse or stream ITVX from Canada. ITVX says downloads require Premium and are available only through its mobile apps. Its download guide lists iOS 14 or later and Android 7.0 or later as minimum operating-system versions; app requirements can change.

- While in the UK, open the ITVX app on an Android or iOS device and sign in to an ITVX Premium account.
- Find the programme and check that a download option is available; licensing restrictions mean some titles cannot be downloaded.
- Download it before leaving the UK, then check the app’s expiry information. The stated limit is seven days, with 48 hours to finish once playback starts.
- Watch the downloaded programme offline while it remains available. Do not assume the download makes live or on-demand ITVX streaming available in Canada.
For the service’s precise conditions, see ITVX’s offline-download instructions and its guidance for viewers abroad.
What about BBC iPlayer downloads?
TV Licensing distinguishes prior downloads from overseas access: qualifying programmes downloaded before departure may be watched abroad, usually for 30 days after they were shown live. Its guidance does not authorize starting a stream or download once abroad. The availability period is programme-dependent, so check the download in iPlayer before travel rather than relying on the usual 30-day window for every title.

No. BBC.com is a separate, commercially funded international service, not the UK iPlayer catalogue. BBC Help says Canadian subscribers can access articles, videos and podcasts, but the BBC News channel livestream is unavailable in Canada because of existing rights agreements. A UK TV Licence or a UK account home setting does not turn BBC.com into iPlayer or remove geolocation limits. Do a VPN, streaming stick or router solve it?
Do not count on them as an approved or guaranteed route. ITV says its broadcast and content agreements limit streaming to viewers in the UK, lists VPN use as a possible cause of an error, and says it does not support VPNs and actively blocks them. If you are physically in the UK and ITVX reports a location-related error, ITV advises turning the VPN off; that troubleshooting advice does not make overseas access permitted.
ITVX supports devices including Fire TV, Roku and Apple TV, but device compatibility does not change territorial rights. A streaming stick, VPN, router or UK account setting cannot be represented as granting access to UK-only streams from Canada. See ITVX troubleshooting guidance and ITVX supported devices.

How to find British programmes available in Canada
For a particular show, check Canadian streaming services, broadcasters and digital stores for that title. Rights are acquired programme by programme, and no single complete current catalogue of UK programmes in Canada is established here. If you want BBC editorial content rather than iPlayer programmes, BBC.com is a distinct option with the Canadian limitations described above.
