How to Watch the Stargate Franchise in Chronological Order

For the main live-action story, start with Stargate (1994), watch Stargate SG-1 through season 7, then follow the overlapping runs of SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. After SG-1 seasons 9–10 and Atlantis seasons 2–3, watch The Ark of Truth, then Continuum, finish Atlantis seasons 4–5, and end with Stargate Universe seasons 1–2. That season-level plan is the clearest first watch; an exact episode order is more precise but requires frequent switching between series.

The recommended chronological order

This order follows the central live-action continuity and keeps the major crossovers in their intended place. It is chronological at the film-and-season level, not a claim that every episode in one season occurs before every episode in the next.

Step Watch Reason for its position
1 Stargate (1994 film) Introduces the Stargate premise and the discovery of a portal to another world.
2 Stargate SG-1, seasons 1–7 The television continuation of the film’s story and the foundation for the wider franchise.
3 SG-1 season 8 and Stargate: Atlantis season 1 These seasons run in parallel and establish the Atlantis expedition.
4 SG-1 season 9 and Atlantis season 2 The two shows continue simultaneously, with continuity references between them.
5 SG-1 season 10 and Atlantis season 3 This is the final overlapping block before the SG-1 continuation films.
6 Stargate: The Ark of Truth Continues and resolves the Ori storyline introduced in the final SG-1 seasons.
7 Stargate: Continuum A separate SG-1 feature that follows The Ark of Truth in the recommended film order.
8 Atlantis, seasons 4–5 The Atlantis story continues after the SG-1 films.
9 Stargate Universe, seasons 1–2 The broad live-action chronology concludes with the later Destiny expedition.

If you want strict in-universe chronology, add Stargate Origins before the 1994 film. If you want every Stargate production, add the animated Stargate Infinity as a separate completionist entry rather than treating it as part of the core live-action sequence.

Why the 1994 film comes first

Stargate (1994) supplies the premise that the television series develops: an ancient ring can connect Earth with distant worlds, and a team can travel through it. SG-1 follows the film’s setup rather than rebooting it, so beginning with the movie gives the television pilot more context.

The film and series do not have identical casts or exactly the same presentation of every detail. That does not change the viewing position. Treat the movie as the starting point for the franchise’s live-action mythology, then move directly to SG-1.

Watching SG-1 seasons 1–7

Watch all seven seasons in order before introducing Atlantis. These seasons establish the Stargate Command team, the major early threats and the wider network of worlds that later stories assume you understand.

Do not begin Atlantis after season 1

Atlantis is a spin-off that grows out of events in SG-1. Starting it immediately after SG-1 season 1 removes the setup that leads to the Atlantis expedition. For a first watch, the clean dividing line is the end of SG-1 season 7.

Keep multi-part stories together

Even when you use an episode-by-episode guide later, watch two-part finales, premieres and crossover stories as single units. Splitting a multi-episode story between shows or between viewing sessions can make its cause-and-effect order harder to follow.

How to handle the overlapping seasons

From SG-1 season 8 onward, a simple “finish one show, then start the other” method is less accurate. SG-1 season 8 and Atlantis season 1 were produced and broadcast as a paired period, and the later seasons continue to overlap. The two shows do not require constant switching to be understandable, but their references make the overlap meaningful.

Approach How it works Best for Trade-off
Season-block order Watch SG-1 season 8 with Atlantis season 1, then move to the next paired block. Viewers who want an easy plan with minimal interruptions. Some episodes will not be in their exact broadcast position.
Near-broadcast order Alternate episodes according to their original run, while keeping premieres, finales and other multi-part stories together. Viewers who want cross-show timing and references preserved. Requires a watch list and frequent changes between series.
Strict in-universe order Place episodes according to the fictional timeline rather than release dates. Completionists focused on story chronology above all else. It is harder to verify at episode level and can conflict with the release experience.

The practical season-block plan

  1. Watch SG-1 season 8 and then Atlantis season 1, or alternate between them if you prefer to preserve broadcast-era context.
  2. Watch SG-1 season 9 and Atlantis season 2 as the next pair.
  3. Watch SG-1 season 10 and Atlantis season 3 as the final paired block.
  4. Keep each show’s two-part stories intact even if that means watching several episodes from one series consecutively.

This block method is a useful simplification, not an episode-level chronology. If a reference, character appearance or cliff-hanger timing matters to you, use a dedicated optimized episode list instead.

Where The Ark of Truth and Continuum fit

Stargate: The Ark of Truth

Watch The Ark of Truth after SG-1 season 10 and after the corresponding Atlantis season 3 block. It is an SG-1 continuation film that resolves the Ori storyline, so placing it earlier can reveal the outcome of an arc that the television seasons are still building.

Stargate: Continuum

Watch Continuum after The Ark of Truth. It is another SG-1 feature, but it tells a distinct time-related story rather than functioning as the direct conclusion of the Ori plot. The recommended film order is therefore The Ark of Truth, then Continuum.

Why the films come before later Atlantis

The films belong immediately after the tenth SG-1 season in this viewing plan. Atlantis continues beyond that point, so watch its fourth and fifth seasons after both films rather than postponing the films until the entire franchise is finished.

Finishing Atlantis and moving to Universe

After Continuum, watch Atlantis seasons 4 and 5. These seasons are not an optional side trip: they complete the Atlantis expedition’s television story and contain the show’s later developments.

Then watch Stargate Universe seasons 1 and 2. Universe follows the earlier live-action series in the broad chronology and shifts the setting and ensemble to the ancient ship Destiny. Watching it last gives you the most context for the franchise’s accumulated mythology.

Optional entries and how to label them

Stargate Origins

Stargate Origins is a prequel web series. For a strict fictional-timeline order, place it before the 1994 film. For a release-order-first experience, save it until after the core live-action run because it was released in 2018 and was designed for viewers who already knew the franchise.

There is no single correct choice here. Choose the prequel-first position if your priority is the story’s internal chronology; choose the later position if you want to discover the franchise in the order audiences received it.

Stargate Infinity

Stargate Infinity is animated and should be listed separately from the live-action continuity. Include it after the core sequence if your goal is to sample every Stargate-branded production. Do not insert it between live-action seasons and assume that doing so is required for the main story.

Novels and other tie-in material

Licensed SG-1 and Atlantis novels exist, but their availability and continuity status vary. They are not needed to understand the film-and-television chronology above. Add them only after deciding whether you want officially licensed supplementary fiction or only the screen canon.

Exact episode order versus an easier first watch

Two viewing philosophies are both defensible. Near-broadcast order preserves the way the shows originally interacted: a development in one series can be followed by a reference in the other, and crossover timing remains visible. Season-block order is easier to maintain, especially if you are watching on a service or disc set that organizes episodes by series.

GateWorld’s optimized guide, published in 2024, is described as prioritizing original broadcast order while keeping two-parters and other multi-episode storylines together. Its linked downloadable guide is the appropriate tool when you want an episode-level plan rather than the season-level sequence in this article. GateWorld also published a recommended-order guide in 2009, so check which version you are following and read its notes before treating any list as an absolute in-universe timeline.

Choose near-broadcast order when

  • You notice continuity references and want them to arrive close to their original context.
  • You are comfortable switching between two series every few episodes.
  • You want the experience closest to the period when SG-1 and Atlantis aired together.

Choose season blocks when

  • You prefer to stay with one cast and format for a longer stretch.
  • You are introducing the franchise to someone who finds alternating shows confusing.
  • You want a reliable plan without tracking individual episode dates.

Release order, chronological order and a second viewing

For most newcomers, the recommended plan is also close to the practical release experience: the 1994 movie, then SG-1, followed by the concurrent SG-1 and Atlantis years, the two SG-1 films, the final Atlantis seasons and Universe. The significant scope decision is Origins. Although its story is a prequel, it arrived in 2018, so putting it first means choosing fictional chronology over the order in which viewers encountered the franchise.

A second viewing can use the strictest version of the plan. Start with Origins, move through the 1994 film and television story, and use an episode-level crossover list for the overlapping seasons. Keep Infinity outside that list as an animated bonus. This lets you compare internal chronology with the original broadcast rhythm without confusing the two goals.

How to manage the overlap without losing your place

Create three columns in a note: series, season and episode. Mark each premiere, finale and two-part story as a single unit. If you choose near-broadcast order, check off an episode only after completing the full multi-episode arc. If you choose season blocks, write the paired block at the top of the page—8/1, 9/2 or 10/3—so you remember that the shows are concurrent even while you watch one series at a time.

Do not use a platform’s automatic “next episode” feature as your chronology guide once the shows overlap. Digital catalogs and disc sets normally group episodes by series, not by the shared timeline. A simple manual list prevents accidentally finishing every later SG-1 episode before seeing the corresponding Atlantis period.

Physical media, books and availability

Disc editions can be useful for a long franchise watch because they keep complete seasons together and do not depend on a changing catalog. GateWorld’s viewing-order pages surface a “Get Stargate on Disc” link, but that does not establish a particular product, price, region or included extras. If you buy a Stargate DVD collection, confirm the exact seasons, format and regional compatibility before ordering.

The same caution applies to novels. A Fandemonium Books order form lists SG-1 and Atlantis categories, but individual titles may be unavailable and their continuity relationship to the screen stories varies. Treat books as optional licensed fiction, not as missing chapters required to understand the films and series. Streaming catalogs change by country and date as well; verify current local availability separately rather than assuming every service carries the complete sequence.

A step-by-step watch plan

  1. Start a viewing log. Record the series, season and episode as you finish it. This is especially useful once the two shows overlap.
  2. Watch the 1994 film. Use it as the premise-setting entry, even if you later decide to move Origins to the front for a second, strict-chronology pass.
  3. Complete SG-1 seasons 1–7. Do not jump to Atlantis early.
  4. Select your overlap method. Use the paired season blocks for convenience, or a broadcast-oriented guide for more exact timing.
  5. Complete the three paired periods. Cover SG-1 season 8 with Atlantis season 1, then seasons 9 and 2, then seasons 10 and 3.
  6. Watch the SG-1 films in order. Put The Ark of Truth before Continuum.
  7. Return to Atlantis. Finish seasons 4 and 5.
  8. End with Universe. Watch both seasons after the earlier live-action series.
  9. Add optional material only after defining your scope. Put Origins before the film for strict fictional chronology, or after the core run for release-order context; place Infinity in a separate animated-completionist section.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Watching all of SG-1 before starting Atlantis

This is convenient but places the later SG-1 seasons ahead of their parallel Atlantis stories. It also delays references that were intended to be understood while both shows were running.

Putting the films at the very end

The films are SG-1 continuations and belong before Atlantis seasons 4–5 in the recommended sequence. Saving them until after Universe changes the chronology and can make the SG-1 ending feel detached from its proper position.

Assuming every season boundary is a precise date line

Season labels are an organizing convenience. Episodes within overlapping seasons can be separated by broadcast timing, crossover placement and story structure. Use season blocks for simplicity, but do not describe them as a definitive episode-by-episode timeline.

Treating optional productions as required

Origins and Infinity serve different purposes. The former is a prequel web series whose release order differs from its fictional placement; the latter is animated. Neither needs to interrupt the core live-action run.

Assuming streaming availability is universal

Catalogs change by country, service and date. The chronology does not identify a streaming platform, so verify current availability and regional edits before starting. Physical editions may also divide seasons differently from digital catalogs.

Which order should a first-time viewer choose?

Use the season-block sequence in the opening table if you want the least complicated complete watch. It preserves the essential chronology, keeps the films in their proper place and avoids unnecessary switching.

Use a broadcast-oriented episode guide if continuity timing is part of the appeal. That approach takes more planning but better reflects how SG-1 and Atlantis originally overlapped. For a second viewing, strict in-universe placement can be a fun experiment, with Origins moved before the 1994 film and the animated series tracked separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct Stargate watch order for a first-time viewer?

Start with Stargate (1994), then watch SG-1 seasons 1–7. Pair SG-1 season 8 with Atlantis season 1, seasons 9 and 2, and seasons 10 and 3. Follow those blocks with The Ark of Truth, Continuum, Atlantis seasons 4–5, and Universe seasons 1–2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to alternate SG-1 and Atlantis episode by episode?

No. Alternating in near-broadcast order preserves timing more precisely, but paired season blocks are easier and retain the broad chronology. Keep every two-part story together whichever method you choose.

Should Stargate Origins come before the 1994 movie?

Only for strict fictional chronology. Origins is a prequel, but it was released in 2018. Viewers who prefer release context should watch the core live-action story first and save Origins for later.

Where do The Ark of Truth and Continuum belong?

Watch both after SG-1 season 10 and the Atlantis season 3 block. Put The Ark of Truth first because it resolves the Ori storyline; watch Continuum afterward.

Is Stargate Infinity required for the main story?

No. Infinity is animated and should be listed as a separate completionist entry. It does not need to be inserted between the live-action seasons.

Can I watch all of SG-1 before starting Atlantis?

You can, but it is less accurate once the shows overlap. The later SG-1 seasons run alongside early Atlantis, and watching them in separate blocks can move episodes away from their broadcast-era context.

Are the Stargate novels part of the required chronology?

No. Licensed SG-1 and Atlantis novels are optional supplementary fiction. Availability and continuity status vary, so finish the screen canon first unless you specifically want tie-in books.

Where can I find an exact episode-level order?

GateWorld’s optimized guide, published in 2024, is intended for that purpose. It prioritizes broadcast order and keeps two-parters and other multi-episode stories together. Use its notes rather than treating any season-block list as exact.

The Bottom Line

For the simplest complete watch, go from Stargate (1994) through SG-1 seasons 1–7, follow the three overlapping SG-1/Atlantis season blocks, watch The Ark of Truth and Continuum, finish Atlantis seasons 4–5, and end with Stargate Universe. Add Origins before the movie only for strict in-universe chronology, and keep Infinity as a separate animated extra.
