The clearest way to watch The Mummy films is by release order within each continuity. Start with the Brendan Fraser trilogy—The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)—then watch the five Scorpion King spin-offs if you want the complete eight-film modern collection. The 1932 Boris Karloff series and The Mummy (2017) belong to separate continuities.
There is no single chronology that connects every movie. Treat the franchise as three viewing branches: the classic Universal cycle, the Fraser-era trilogy and its spin-offs, and the standalone 2017 reboot.

The complete Fraser-era release order
Universal’s eight-film modern collection combines the three-film Fraser-era trilogy with five Scorpion King spin-offs. The following order preserves the release sequence for all eight titles.
| Order | Film | Release year | How it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Mummy | 1999 | First film in the Fraser-era trilogy |
| 2 | The Mummy Returns | 2001 | Second film in the trilogy |
| 3 | The Scorpion King | 2002 | First spin-off in the eight-film collection |
| 4 | The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor | 2008 | Third film in the trilogy |
| 5 | The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior | 2008 | Second spin-off |
| 6 | The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption | 2012 | Third spin-off |
| 7 | The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power | 2015 | Fourth spin-off |
| 8 | Scorpion King: Book of Souls | 2018 | Fifth spin-off |
This is the best all-purpose answer when someone asks for every modern Mummy-related film in order. It keeps the trilogy together except for the release of the first spin-off between the second and third trilogy films, while still reflecting the order in which Universal released the eight titles.

A shorter story-first order
If your priority is the central Fraser story rather than the complete collection, watch the three trilogy films consecutively:
- The Mummy (1999)
- The Mummy Returns (2001)
- The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
After that, continue with the five Scorpion King films in their release order. This arrangement is easier to follow because the trilogy remains one uninterrupted viewing block, even though it is not the exact franchise-wide release order.
Why there is no single order for every Mummy movie
The word “Mummy” covers multiple Universal film lines made in different eras. They should not be treated as chapters in one continuous story. The Fraser trilogy, its Scorpion King offshoots, the 1932 classic cycle, and the 2017 reboot are best understood as separate branches.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Fraser trilogy
The modern core consists of three films released in 1999, 2001, and 2008. Universal identifies The Mummy (1999) as the story of explorers who resurrect an ancient 3,000-year-old mummy. The Mummy Returns is the second entry, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is the third film in the trilogy. Watching those three in release order gives you the intended progression of the main modern series.
The Scorpion King spin-offs
The Scorpion King and its four numbered or subtitle-bearing sequels are included in Universal’s eight-film collection. They expand the modern branch as spin-offs rather than forming a fourth entry in the Fraser trilogy. The titles and release years establish a straightforward release sequence, but they do not turn every Mummy production into one unified continuity.
The classic Universal cycle
The 1932 Boris Karloff film begins a different six-film collection. Its follow-ups were packaged by Universal as the Complete Legacy Collection, alongside Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy. This older line has its own classic-horror identity and should be watched separately from the 1999–2008 action-adventure trilogy.
The 2017 reboot
The Mummy (2017) is a standalone reboot. Its premise follows an ancient princess awakened in the present day, and it is not part of either the classic six-film set or the Fraser trilogy. You can watch it by itself without seeing any earlier entry.

Every film in the Fraser and Scorpion King branch
1. The Mummy (1999)
Begin here for the modern action-adventure branch. Universal’s synopsis centers on explorers who resurrect an ancient mummy that has been buried for 3,000 years. As the first film in the trilogy, it establishes the setting, mythology, and characters that the next two trilogy entries build on.
Do not place the 1932 film immediately before it as though the 1999 story were a direct sequel. The shared title signals a remake-era interpretation, not a single uninterrupted narrative.
2. The Mummy Returns (2001)
The second trilogy film follows the 1999 entry in release order. Watching it immediately after the first film keeps the central modern storyline together and avoids the common mistake of jumping to a spin-off before completing the trilogy’s second chapter.
3. The Scorpion King (2002)
This is the first spin-off in the eight-film modern collection. It arrived after The Mummy Returns, which is why it appears third in the franchise-wide release order. If you are following the story-first plan, save it until after all three trilogy films; if you want release order, watch it here.

4. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
Universal describes this as the third trilogy film, built around a resurrected dragon emperor. It completes the Fraser-era core and is the point at which a trilogy-only viewing plan ends. In the eight-film release order, it follows The Scorpion King (2002).
5. The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (2008)
This second Scorpion King title continues the spin-off line. Its 2008 release places it after Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in the combined list. It is not the fourth movie in the Fraser trilogy, so viewers following the main trilogy should treat it as optional continuation.
6. The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption (2012)
The third spin-off follows the 2008 entries in release order. Include it when your goal is the complete eight-film set; omit it if you only want the three-film Mummy story.

7. The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power (2015)
This is the fourth spin-off. Its position is unambiguous in a release-order marathon: watch it after Battle for Redemption and before Scorpion King: Book of Souls.
8. Scorpion King: Book of Souls (2018)
The fifth spin-off is the latest title in Universal’s eight-film collection. It closes the release-order list for the Fraser-related branch. Once it is finished, you have watched all eight films included in that collection.
The classic Universal order
For classic-horror viewers, use the six-film sequence represented by Universal’s Complete Legacy Collection. The only year supplied for this branch is the 1932 starting film; the remaining titles are listed in the collection’s order rather than assigned years here.
| Order | Film | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Mummy (1932) | Starring Boris Karloff; the beginning of the classic branch |
| 2 | The Mummy’s Hand | Second film in the six-film collection |
| 3 | The Mummy’s Tomb | Third film in the collection |
| 4 | The Mummy’s Ghost | Fourth film in the collection |
| 5 | The Mummy’s Curse | Fifth film in the collection |
| 6 | Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy | Final title in the six-film legacy set |
Watch these six together if you want the classic Universal experience. Their place in the viewing plan is independent of the Fraser films: you do not need to alternate a 1932 title with a 1999 title, and completing the classic collection does not prepare you for a later chapter in the modern trilogy.
Where The Mummy (2017) belongs
Put the 2017 film in its own one-movie branch. Universal’s synopsis presents an ancient princess awakened in the present day, making it a modern reboot rather than a sequel to Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. It can be watched first, last, or on a separate night without changing the order of any other branch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The least confusing way to label it in a watchlist is “standalone reboot.” That description prevents two common errors: treating it as the fourth Fraser film or assuming that it continues the 1932 Boris Karloff storyline.
Choose the right viewing plan
Your ideal order depends on whether you want one continuous modern marathon, the shortest route through the main story, or a tour of Universal’s history.

| Goal | Films to watch | Best order |
|---|---|---|
| Main modern story | 3 | The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) |
| Complete modern collection | 8 | Use the eight-film release order listed above |
| Classic horror | 6 | Use the six-film Complete Legacy Collection order |
| Only the reboot | 1 | The Mummy (2017) by itself |
Choose the trilogy when continuity matters most
The trilogy-only plan is the most efficient choice for viewers who want the central modern storyline without committing to five additional spin-offs. It also avoids the interruption created by inserting the 2002 spin-off between the second and third trilogy films in the combined release list.
Choose all eight modern films for franchise completeness
The eight-film plan is for viewers who want every title in Universal’s modern collection. Use release order exactly, including the 2002 Scorpion King film before the 2008 third trilogy entry and the four later spin-offs afterward.
Choose the classic set for old-school horror
The six-film legacy path is the appropriate choice if you are interested in the Boris Karloff starting point and the older Universal cycle. Its classic-horror tone differs from the action-adventure identity associated with the Fraser-era branch, so selecting this set is a change of style as well as a change of continuity.
Add the 2017 reboot as an isolated experiment
Because the 2017 film is standalone, it works as a separate viewing choice rather than a required stop in any marathon. Watch it independently when you want the modern reboot premise without committing to either older branch.
A practical watchlist you can follow
Plan A: the eight-film modern marathon
- Watch The Mummy (1999).
- Watch The Mummy Returns (2001).
- Watch The Scorpion King (2002).
- Watch The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).
- Watch The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (2008).
- Watch The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption (2012).
- Watch The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power (2015).
- Watch Scorpion King: Book of Souls (2018).
Plan B: the uninterrupted trilogy
- Watch The Mummy (1999).
- Watch The Mummy Returns (2001).
- Watch The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).
- Add the five Scorpion King films afterward only if you want the wider spin-off branch.
Plan C: the classic collection
- Watch The Mummy (1932).
- Watch The Mummy’s Hand.
- Watch The Mummy’s Tomb.
- Watch The Mummy’s Ghost.
- Watch The Mummy’s Curse.
- Finish with Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy.
Plan D: a complete tour of every branch
If you want to sample everything, keep each continuity grouped rather than alternating titles:
- Watch the six classic films in their legacy-collection order.
- Watch the three Fraser trilogy films in release order.
- Watch the five Scorpion King spin-offs in release order.
- Finish with the standalone The Mummy (2017), or place it first as an independent opener.
There is no story advantage to interleaving these branches. Grouping them makes the continuity change obvious and lets you compare classic horror with modern action adventure without suggesting that one branch leads directly into another.
Common ordering mistakes
Mistake: treating 2017 as the next sequel
The 2017 film is a reboot, not the fourth Fraser entry. Keep it outside the 1999–2008 trilogy list.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

Mistake: calling the spin-offs trilogy chapters
The Scorpion King films are included in the eight-film collection, but the Fraser-era core remains three films. Label the spin-offs separately in your watchlist.
Mistake: forcing one chronology across decades
The classic six-film set, the Fraser branch, and the 2017 reboot do not form one continuous storyline. Release order within a branch is clearer than trying to create a single cross-branch timeline.
Mistake: skipping Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in an eight-film list
Because the first spin-off appears after The Mummy Returns in release order, some lists accidentally omit the third trilogy film. It is still the trilogy’s conclusion and belongs between the first and second groups of spin-offs in the eight-film sequence.

Mistake: assuming every collection has the same contents
The named sets serve different purposes. The eight-film collection covers the Fraser trilogy and five Scorpion King titles; the focused trilogy set contains only the three modern core films; and the Complete Legacy Collection contains the six classic titles. Check the exact edition description before buying or borrowing a set.
Collections and availability
Universal offers three useful physical-product paths for different viewing goals:
- The Mummy 8-Movie Collection: the direct match for viewers who want the Fraser trilogy plus all five Scorpion King spin-offs.
- The Mummy Trilogy: the focused option for viewers who want only the three Fraser-era trilogy films.
- The Complete Legacy Collection: the classic-film option containing the six-film Boris Karloff-era branch, including Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy.
Streaming catalogs, digital rental prices, and regional rights change frequently. Availability was not established for a particular country or date, so check the current listing in your region before starting a marathon. A service carrying one branch may not carry the others, and a listing titled simply The Mummy can refer to the 1932, 1999, or 2017 film.
How to avoid title and edition confusion
- Confirm the release year: 1932, 1999, and 2017 are different films with the same title.
- Look for the full subtitle when selecting a sequel: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Rise of a Warrior, Battle for Redemption, Quest for Power, and Book of Souls are distinct entries.
- Check whether a package says “trilogy,” “8-Movie Collection,” or “Complete Legacy Collection.” Those labels identify different branches and counts.
- Keep a checklist of the year and subtitle, especially for the two films released in 2008.
Final recommendation
For most viewers, watch The Mummy (1999), The Mummy Returns (2001), and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) as the core trilogy. Add The Scorpion King (2002), The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (2008), The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption (2012), The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power (2015), and Scorpion King: Book of Souls (2018) in release order for the complete modern eight-film branch. Watch the six classic films separately, and treat The Mummy (2017) as a standalone reboot.
