Watch Halo Season 1, then Season 2. The television series follows the separate “Silver timeline,” so it does not slot into the games’ chronology. For a first game playthrough, use release order: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo 4, then Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Infinite. In-universe chronology is a worthwhile second route, not the best first introduction.
The short answer
| What you want to experience | Use this order | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Paramount+ television story | Season 1 (2022), then Season 2 (2024) | The show is one continuous television production, but its events belong to the Silver timeline rather than the games’ core canon. |
| First game playthrough | Combat Evolved Anniversary → Halo 2 Anniversary → Halo 3 → Halo 3: ODST → Halo: Reach → Halo 4 → Halo 5: Guardians → Halo Infinite | Release order preserves the original reveals, changing game design, and the way the main saga was introduced. |
| Second playthrough focused on lore chronology | Halo Wars → Reach → Combat Evolved (or Campaign Evolved) → Halo 2 → ODST → Halo 3 → Halo 4 → Halo 5 → Halo Wars 2 → Infinite | This follows the broad in-universe timeline, with ODST overlapping the period covered by Halo 2. |
The show and the games share names, characters, ideas, and terminology, but they are not one combined storyline. Decide which medium you are following before you start; that single distinction prevents most order-related confusion.

How the television series fits into Halo
The Silver timeline is separate
Frank O’Connor, Halo franchise creative director, described the series as taking place in the “Silver timeline.” His explanation says the plot draws on themes and characters from the games, extended fiction, and other media, but “branches from the core canon” so television can meet different storytelling needs without tangling the show with the ongoing game timeline.
That means you should not place an episode between Halo: Reach and Combat Evolved, or try to reconcile every television event with a game mission. A familiar character may have a different history, motivation, or relationship in the show. Treat the series as an alternate adaptation, not as another campaign in the Master Chief’s game chronology.

Best game order for a first playthrough: release order
Halo Support’s explicit beginner guidance is: “To experience the games in the order they released, start with the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary campaign.” The Master Chief Collection is the convenient way to play the first six campaigns on Xbox and Windows; it can be bought outright or accessed through some Game Pass plans. Store pages and subscription catalogs change, so verify the current option for your account and region.
1. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
Begin with the Anniversary edition of the first Halo campaign. It lets a new player experience the original foundation of the series while offering updated presentation. More importantly, it establishes the setting, factions, combat rhythm, and mysteries that later games expect you to recognize.

2. Halo 2 Anniversary
Continue immediately with the Anniversary edition of Halo 2. It expands the conflict and introduces perspectives that make the larger universe understandable. Playing it second preserves the escalation that original players encountered rather than revealing later context early.

3. Halo 3
Halo 3 follows the story begun in the first two campaigns and forms the original trilogy’s payoff. Keep it before the side story and prequel below if you want the same sequence in which the central arc was first delivered.
4. Halo 3: ODST
ODST is a self-contained campaign starring a different kind of soldier. Its events overlap the era of Halo 2, but its release after Halo 3 makes that placement the least disruptive for a first run. You can appreciate its atmosphere and structure without stopping the main saga in the middle of an earlier game.
5. Halo: Reach
Reach is a story prequel set shortly before the first Halo. Playing it here keeps its historical position as a later release and protects the introductions and reveals that Combat Evolved was designed to deliver first. Starting with Reach is valid for a chronology-focused replay, but it changes the intended first-time experience.
6. Halo 4
Halo 4 begins the next major chapter after the original trilogy. It is the final campaign in the six-game Master Chief Collection sequence, so finish it before moving to the later numbered entries.

7. Halo 5: Guardians
After the six games in the collection, play Halo 5: Guardians. Xbox Wire identifies it as part of the continuation of the Master Chief story. Check the current platform listing before planning a purchase, because availability is separate from the collection’s Xbox and Windows offering.
8. Halo Infinite
Finish the mainline sequence with Halo Infinite. It follows Halo 5 in the broader saga and is the latest released mainline campaign in this order.
What is in the Master Chief Collection?
Halo Support describes the Master Chief Collection as six games:
- Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
- Halo 2 Anniversary
- Halo 3
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo: Reach
- Halo 4
Those six entries are why the collection is the simplest starting point for a first run. It does not replace the later campaigns, so plan separately for Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Infinite. Before installing, confirm whether your chosen Xbox or Windows edition includes the campaigns you expect and whether your Game Pass tier currently carries them.

Optional in-universe chronology
Choose chronology if you already know the major reveals, are replaying the franchise, or care more about the fictional calendar than historical release context. The following is a broad ordering rather than Halo Support’s beginner recommendation:
| Chronological position | Campaign | Placement note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Halo Wars | Set in 2531, well before the original trilogy. |
| 2 | Halo: Reach | Takes place shortly before the first Halo in 2552. |
| 3 | Halo: Combat Evolved or the Campaign Evolved remake | The main 2552 campaign follows the events on the ring. |
| 4 | Halo 2 | Continues the central conflict. |
| 5 | Halo 3: ODST | Its story overlaps the period of Halo 2; placing it immediately after is a practical approximation. |
| 6 | Halo 3 | Follows the overlapping events above. |
| 7 | Halo 4 | Moves into the next mainline chapter. |
| 8 | Halo 5: Guardians | Continues after Halo 4. |
| 9 | Halo Wars 2 | Fits after Halo 5 in this broad campaign sequence. |
| 10 | Halo Infinite | Set in 2560. |
GamesRadar+’s chronology also identifies Reach as preceding Combat Evolved and places Infinite in 2560. Because ODST overlaps another game and the franchise contains parallel viewpoints, no single chronology list removes every ordering judgment. Use the table as a coherent route, not as a claim that every mission happens in a clean, non-overlapping line.
How to handle Halo: Campaign Evolved
It is a remake, not Halo 6
Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on July 28, 2026, with early access beginning July 23, according to Halo Studios community director Brian Jarrard. It retells Combat Evolved rather than serving as the next numbered sequel. The remake also adds a new three-mission arc called Operation: METEORITE.

Best Value
Where it belongs in each route
- First release-order run: play Combat Evolved Anniversary in the collection, then treat Campaign Evolved as a later remake comparison. Substituting it immediately can blur which scenes are original, revised, or newly added.
- Chronology run: place Operation: METEORITE before Reach. Xbox describes those missions as taking place a year before the first game. After that prequel arc, play the remake’s retelling of Combat Evolved.
- Completionist route: play both versions. The original establishes the historical design and reveal structure; the remake supplies its updated presentation and additional prequel material.
Where the other campaigns fit
The mainline order is enough for most players. These additional campaigns broaden the setting but are not prerequisites for understanding the Master Chief sequence:
| Campaign | Release year | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Halo Wars | 2009 | Play first in a chronology-focused route; it is a strategy-game prequel to the shooter saga. |
| Halo: Spartan Assault | 2013 | Optional side campaign between the major releases. |
| Halo: Spartan Strike | 2015 | Optional side campaign; not required for the mainline plot. |
| Halo Wars 2 | 2017 | Optional strategy sequel that fits before Infinite in a broad chronology. |
The release years and expanded list above come from GamesRadar+’s secondary franchise overview, while the beginner recommendation comes from Halo Support. That distinction matters: the side-game list is useful for completeness, but it is not an official replacement for the recommended shooter sequence.
Release order or chronology?
| Decision factor | Release order | Chronological order |
|---|---|---|
| Best for a first-time player | Yes. It follows the series’ original introductions. | Only if fictional-date continuity matters more than reveal timing. |
| Story reveals | Preserves intended surprises and context. | Can reveal later explanations earlier, especially by opening with Reach. |
| Game-design progression | Shows how mechanics and presentation evolved from release to release. | Jumps backward and forward through development eras. |
| Side-game inclusion | Easy to add after the core campaigns. | Requires judgment for overlaps such as ODST and for strategy titles. |
| Remake handling | Play the original Anniversary campaign first; revisit Campaign Evolved later. | Use Operation: METEORITE before Reach, then the remake’s retelling of the first game. |
If you are buying one collection and want the least complicated path, choose release order. If you have already completed the saga and want to map the fictional history, choose chronology on a replay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical setup plan
For the simplest first run
- Watch the television series separately: Season 1, then Season 2.
- Choose an Xbox or Windows version of the Master Chief Collection and verify the current purchase or Game Pass option.
- Launch the campaigns in the six-game order supplied by Halo Support.
- Arrange access to Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Infinite after Halo 4.
- Save Campaign Evolved for a remake replay unless you specifically want its new prequel missions first.
For a lore-heavy replay
- Begin with Halo Wars.
- Play Operation: METEORITE from Campaign Evolved, if you want the new prequel material, then continue with Reach.
- Use either the original Combat Evolved or the remake for the main 2552 campaign.
- Continue through Halo 2, ODST, Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo 5, Halo Wars 2, and Infinite.
- Add Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike when you want side stories rather than a continuous Master Chief campaign.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Combining the show with the games: the Silver timeline is a branch, so an episode is not a missing chapter between two game campaigns.
- Starting with Reach because it is earlier in the fictional calendar: that is a good chronology choice but changes the first-time reveal order.
- Putting ODST in the middle of Halo 2: its events overlap that period; playing it after Halo 3 follows release order and avoids an awkward interruption.
- Assuming the collection contains every campaign: it contains six games, not Halo 5, Infinite, or every spin-off.
- Treating Campaign Evolved as a new numbered sequel: it is a remake of the first campaign with additional Operation: METEORITE missions.
- Assuming a Canadian listing proves worldwide streaming: availability for the television series and game subscriptions is regional and can change.
Optional reference for deeper lore
Once you have completed the campaigns, Halo Encyclopedia is a useful reference for characters, factions, technology, and two decades of storytelling. Xbox Wire describes the book as a 2022 Dark Horse publication. It is supplementary reading, not a prerequisite for choosing a watch or play order.
Quick Recap
Your final checklist
- Watch Season 1 before Season 2.
- Keep the television series in the Silver timeline, separate from game canon.
- For a first game run, start with Combat Evolved Anniversary and follow release order through Infinite.
- Use chronology on a replay, beginning broadly with Halo Wars and placing Reach before the first game.
- Remember that ODST overlaps Halo 2 and that Campaign Evolved is a remake with three new prequel missions.
- Check local streaming, store, platform, and Game Pass listings before spending money.
