Watch Fallout Season 1 first, then Season 2. Amazon says both released seasons are currently available on Prime Video, while Season 3 is confirmed but has no announced release date as of October 13, 2026. For the main games in chronological story order, follow Fallout 76 (2102), Fallout (2161), Fallout 2 (2241), Fallout 3 (2277), Fallout: New Vegas (2281), and Fallout 4 (2287). You do not need to play the games before watching the series, and Bethesda says “any Fallout game can be your first.”
What order should I watch Fallout in?
The released television seasons have a straightforward order:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Fallout Season 1
- Fallout Season 2
Season 2 follows the events of Season 1’s finale, so watching them in release and story order gives you the intended progression. Amazon’s current coverage says every episode from both released seasons is available on Prime Video. Season 1 contains eight episodes; Amazon’s official premiere announcement also described all eight episodes as available at launch.
Where to stream the series
Prime Video is the official streaming service identified for the series. Amazon says Prime Video is included with an Amazon Prime membership, but membership prices and availability vary by country. Check the Amazon site for your region before subscribing rather than assuming a United States price or catalog applies where you live.

How many episodes are in Season 1?
Season 1 has eight episodes. Watching all eight before starting Season 2 avoids jumping between seasons and preserves the show’s cliff-hanger and character introductions in sequence.
What order should I play the Fallout games in?
For the main games, Bethesda’s published in-world chronology is:
| Order | Game | In-world year | Why it appears here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fallout 76 | 2102 | Bethesda describes it as the beginning of the games’ timeline. |
| 2 | Fallout | 2161 | The next dated entry in Bethesda’s main-game chronology. |
| 3 | Fallout 2 | 2241 | Its story takes place after the original game in the official timeline. |
| 4 | Fallout 3 | 2277 | The Washington, D.C.-area entry follows Fallout 2 chronologically. |
| 5 | Fallout: New Vegas | 2281 | Its Mojave story occurs four years after Fallout 3 in the timeline. |
| 6 | Fallout 4 | 2287 | Bethesda identifies it as the latest point in this main-game chronology in its 2022 timeline article. |
This is chronological story order, not release order. It is the best sequence if your priority is following the dates Bethesda assigns to the shared setting. It is not a required preparation course for the television series, and it is not the only sensible way to begin the games.
1. Fallout 76 — 2102
Fallout 76 is the earliest main-game setting in Bethesda’s timeline, in 2102. It is an online multiplayer game, so it suits readers who want to experience Appalachia with other players rather than follow only a traditional single-player route. Bethesda’s companion material associates it with Appalachia and the Reclamation Day premise.
Starting here gives you the earliest point in the main chronology, but it also means beginning with the series’ online entry. Choose it first when timeline position and multiplayer matter more to you than a purely single-player introduction.
2. Fallout — 2161
The original Fallout takes place in 2161, after the events of Fallout 76. It is the second dated stop in Bethesda’s main-game sequence. Playing it here keeps the chronology intact, although a reader who wants a newer first game may prefer Bethesda’s more flexible starting-point guidance instead.

3. Fallout 2 — 2241
Fallout 2 is set in 2241. It follows the original game in the official chronology and continues the main series’ earlier era before the later settings introduced by Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4.
4. Fallout 3 — 2277
Fallout 3 takes place in 2277. Bethesda’s companion guidance connects this game with Boston only indirectly through the wider franchise material; the setting-specific match for Boston and Vault 111 is Fallout 4. If you are playing strictly by dates, complete Fallout 3 before moving to New Vegas.
5. Fallout: New Vegas — 2281
Fallout: New Vegas is set in 2281 and is the most direct game connection for viewers beginning Season 2. Bethesda identifies the Mojave as the game’s home and recommends it to people who want to walk through the same setting visited by Lucy and the Ghoul.
That recommendation is about location and thematic connection, not a prerequisite. You can watch Season 2 without playing New Vegas, but it is the natural choice if the Mojave setting is what makes you want to explore the games.

Fallout 4 is dated 2287, the latest point in Bethesda’s main-game chronology described in its 2022 timeline article. Bethesda’s companion guide links it with Boston and Vault 111, making it the strongest choice for viewers interested in those elements rather than the Mojave.
Do I need to play the games before watching Fallout?
No. Bethesda describes the television series as taking place in the same universe as the role-playing games and more than 200 years after the world ends, but its guidance does not say that viewers must complete any game before watching. The show and games share setting and franchise lore; they are not presented as a required watch-then-play or play-then-watch assignment.
Bethesda makes the same point about entry order in its #Fallout25 Presents: The Fallout Timeline article, published October 17, 2022: any Fallout game can be your first.
Treat the chronological list as an option for lore-focused players, not as homework.

Choosing your first Fallout game
The best first game depends on what you want from the series. Use the following decision points instead of assuming that the earliest date is automatically the best introduction.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose chronological order when the timeline matters most
Play Fallout 76, Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4 when you want the main stories arranged by Bethesda’s in-world years. This approach gives you a clear date-by-date route from 2102 through 2287.
Chronological order can require more patience because it starts with the online entry and then moves through earlier mainline releases before reaching the games most directly connected to the television show’s current locations.
Choose Fallout: New Vegas for the Season 2 setting
Start with Fallout: New Vegas if your main reason for playing is Season 2’s Mojave connection. Bethesda calls the Mojave the game’s home and describes it as a must-play for people who want to walk the same setting as Lucy and the Ghoul.
You do not have to play the preceding games first to use this route. It is a setting-led choice, whereas the six-game list above is a date-led choice.
Choose Fallout 4 for Boston and Vault 111
Fallout 4 is the appropriate first stop if Boston or Vault 111 is the part of the franchise that interests you most. Bethesda’s companion material specifically points to those locations. It is also the latest dated main game in the supplied chronology, so this choice puts accessibility of a setting ahead of chronological sequence.
Choose Fallout 76 for Appalachia or multiplayer
Fallout 76 fits players who want Appalachia, Reclamation Day, and an online multiplayer format. Bethesda places it first in the main timeline, so it also works for readers who want to begin at the earliest dated point without separating the franchise’s online entry from the rest of the chronology.

Choose a spin-off for a different play style
Bethesda describes Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel as centered on squad-focused tactical combat and Fallout Shelter as a vault-management experience. Those are useful alternatives when you want a different format from the role-playing games, but neither belongs in the six-game chronological table because Bethesda’s timeline does not supply dates that establish a complete spin-off order.
How the TV series and games connect
The connection is the shared universe, not a requirement to recognize every game reference. Bethesda says the series is set more than 200 years after the world ends and occupies the same universe as the role-playing games. That gives the show a common history, vocabulary, and world-building foundation while allowing a viewer to start with the television story.

- Mojave: Fallout: New Vegas is Bethesda’s direct game match for Season 2’s setting.
- Boston and Vault 111: Bethesda’s companion guide points to Fallout 4.
- Appalachia and Reclamation Day: Bethesda points to Fallout 76.
- Vault oversight and management: Fallout Shelter explores that angle in a management format.
These are setting and theme connections. They do not establish that a game must be completed before a season, or that the television plot is a direct adaptation of one game’s campaign.
A practical watch-and-play plan
If you want a simple route with the fewest decisions, use this plan:
- Watch Season 1. Complete its eight episodes in order.
- Watch Season 2. It follows Season 1 and is currently included in Amazon’s list of available seasons on Prime Video.
- Pick a game based on your strongest interest. Select New Vegas for the Mojave, Fallout 4 for Boston and Vault 111, or Fallout 76 for Appalachia and multiplayer.
- Switch to the chronological route if you want the full main-game timeline. Play Fallout 76, Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4 in that order.
- Add spin-offs separately. Treat Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, Fallout Shelter, and Fallout Pinball as optional entries rather than forcing them into the dated sequence.
This plan keeps the show’s straightforward season order separate from the games’ optional lore order. It also lets you begin with the location or play style that will make you most likely to continue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is and is not included in the main chronology?
The six titles in the table are the main games for which Bethesda provides the in-world years used here. Bethesda discusses several other releases separately, including Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, Fallout Shelter, and Fallout Pinball. The timeline source does not give dates that establish a complete chronological placement for every one of those spin-offs.
That distinction matters: calling the six-game list the “main-game chronological order” is accurate, while calling it the definitive order for every Fallout release would overstate what Bethesda’s timeline establishes.

Availability and buying checks before you start
Streaming catalogs, game editions, platform support, regional storefronts, and stock can change. Before directing yourself to a purchase or download:
- Confirm that Prime Video lists both seasons in your country and check the current Prime membership terms there.
- Check the exact edition and supported platform for whichever game you choose.
- Verify whether a listing is a single game, a bundle, or a collection before paying.
- Do not assume that an older game’s current compatibility or storefront availability is identical in every region.
Bethesda announced the Fallout S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Anthology in 2024 as a collectible containing PC game codes for seven Fallout games. That announcement is evidence of the product’s format at announcement time, not proof that it is currently in stock or sold in your region. Treat any present-day availability as something to verify separately.
Common order mistakes
Mistake: treating chronological order as release order
The sequence beginning with Fallout 76 is based on in-world years, not the order in which the games launched. Labeling it “release order” would produce a different list and change what the reader is being promised.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMistake: assuming Season 2 requires New Vegas
New Vegas is the strongest game match for the Mojave, but Bethesda’s recommendation is about exploring a shared setting. It is not a stated viewing requirement, and the series can be watched without prior game experience.
Mistake: inserting every spin-off into the dated list
Bethesda’s timeline does not provide enough in-world dates to create a complete spin-off order. Keep the optional titles separate instead of guessing where they belong.
Mistake: carrying a United States streaming price worldwide
Amazon directs readers to their local Amazon site for regional pricing. Prime membership costs and catalog access should therefore be checked locally.
Mistake: treating an announced Season 3 date as confirmed
As of October 13, 2026, Amazon says Season 3 has no announced release date. Recheck the current listing when planning a rewatch or scheduling the next season.
How popular is the Fallout series?
Amazon reported that the first two seasons reached more than 100 million viewers worldwide. Amazon also said the seasons ranked among Prime Video’s four most-watched seasons of all time during the first 13 weeks after Season 2 began streaming. Those are Amazon’s own platform claims and should be read with that stated scope; they are not an independently published audience measurement.
The short decision guide
| Your priority | Start here | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Watch the story with no game preparation | Season 1, then Season 2 | The television seasons are designed to be watched in sequence, and no game prerequisite is stated. |
| Follow the main lore chronology | Fallout 76 through Fallout 4 | This follows Bethesda’s dated in-world order from 2102 to 2287. |
| Visit Season 2’s Mojave | Fallout: New Vegas | Bethesda identifies it as the game set in the Mojave. |
| Explore Boston and Vault 111 | Fallout 4 | Bethesda’s companion guide ties those locations to this game. |
| Play online in Appalachia | Fallout 76 | It is the multiplayer entry associated with Appalachia and Reclamation Day. |
| Manage a vault | Fallout Shelter | Bethesda presents it as a vault-management spin-off, outside the dated main-game order. |
Bottom line
Watch Fallout Season 1 and then Season 2 on Prime Video. Start the games with Fallout: New Vegas if Season 2’s Mojave setting is your hook, or use Bethesda’s full main-game chronology—Fallout 76, Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4—if you want the lore arranged by in-world date. Neither route is mandatory, and you do not need to play before watching.
