How to Watch Someone on Waze

Watching someone on Waze means viewing a trip they have chosen to share with you, such as their live drive progress or estimated time of arrival. Waze is built for navigation and traffic updates, not hidden tracking, so you can only see another person’s location when they intentionally send you a shared drive or ETA link.

This distinction matters for privacy and safety. Waze does not let you search for a person and monitor their real-time location without permission, and any shared trip access depends on the driver starting navigation and choosing to share it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

If someone has shared their Waze drive with you, you can use the link or notification to check their route progress and arrival estimate. If it is not working, the issue is usually related to permissions, connectivity, app settings, or the shared drive ending.

What “Watching Someone on Waze” Actually Means

“Watching someone on Waze” does not mean secretly tracking a person’s phone or looking them up on a map whenever you want. In Waze, it means viewing a drive, route progress, or estimated time of arrival that the driver has deliberately shared with you. The driver starts navigation, chooses to share their drive or ETA, and sends that share to a contact or through a supported messaging app. Only then can you open the shared link or notification and see limited trip information.

A shared Waze drive is designed around a specific journey, not ongoing surveillance. Depending on how the drive was shared and what version of the app is being used, you may be able to see the driver’s current progress along the route, their destination, and an ETA that updates as traffic conditions change. This can be useful when someone is coming to pick you up, meeting you at a restaurant, driving home after an event, or coordinating arrival times with family, friends, or coworkers.

Waze’s sharing features are built for coordination and safety, not for monitoring someone in the background. The person sharing remains in control of the trip information. If they stop navigating, close the drive, lose signal, change app settings, or stop sharing, you may no longer see live progress. The visibility is tied to that shared session rather than a permanent permission that lets you check their location at any time.

What you may see during a shared Waze drive

  • ETA: an estimated arrival time based on the driver’s route and current traffic.
  • Route progress: an approximate view of how far along the driver is on the trip.
  • Destination details: the place or address the driver is navigating to, if included in the share.
  • Status changes: updates when traffic, delays, or route changes affect the arrival time.

What Waze does not provide is just as . You cannot type in a person’s name, phone number, or Waze username and begin following them. You cannot use Waze to track someone who has not shared a drive with you, and you should not try to bypass consent with someone else’s phone, account, or messages. If you need someone’s ETA, the appropriate approach is to ask them to share it directly from Waze when they are comfortable doing so.

Privacy and Consent Requirements

Waze location sharing is built around intentional, temporary sharing. You can view someone’s real-time drive, route progress, or estimated arrival time only if that person chooses to share it with you from their own device. Waze does not provide a feature that lets you search for a person, silently follow their car, or monitor their location in the background without their action.

Consent matters because a shared Waze drive can reveal sensitive details, including where someone started, where they are going, the route they are taking, and approximately when they will arrive. Even if the purpose is harmless, such as checking whether a friend is close to dinner or seeing when a family member will get home, the other person must be the one to initiate sharing or knowingly agree to it.

What Waze sharing allows

  • Viewing a shared drive: If someone sends you their drive, you can open the shared link or notification to see their progress and ETA.
  • Seeing an ETA: The sender can share arrival information so you know when to expect them.
  • Temporary access: Shared drive visibility is tied to that specific trip and typically ends when the drive ends.
  • Recipient-based sharing: The driver chooses who receives the shared drive, such as a contact, messaging app recipient, or link recipient.

What Waze does not allow

  • No hidden tracking: You cannot use Waze to track someone without them sharing their drive.
  • No permanent live map of a person: Waze is not designed as an always-on family locator or employee tracking tool.
  • No lookup by username or phone number: Knowing someone’s name, number, or Waze profile does not let you watch their live location.
  • No bypass for device permissions: If the driver has disabled location services or Waze permissions, their drive cannot be shared properly.

For the driver, privacy controls begin on the phone itself. Waze needs location permission to navigate and share a trip, and the driver must decide when to send that trip to someone else. Depending on the device, location access may be set to options such as only while using the app, precise location, or background access. These operating system settings can affect whether Waze navigation and trip sharing behave as expected.

For the person receiving the shared drive, privacy also comes with responsibility. Do not forward a shared drive link to others unless the driver has agreed to that. A person may be comfortable sharing their ETA with one friend but not with a group chat, workplace, or another family member. If you need someone’s location for safety reasons, ask directly and explain what you need to see and for how long.

There are also safety boundaries to keep in mind. A driver should not adjust sharing settings, text, or troubleshoot the app while actively driving. If a shared drive needs to be sent, it should be done before leaving, while parked, or by using hands-free options where appropriate. The safest arrangement is simple: the driver chooses to share before the trip starts, and the recipient uses the shared ETA without distracting them on the road.

How Someone Can Share Their Waze Drive With You

For you to view someone’s Waze drive, the driver has to start navigation in Waze and intentionally share the trip with you. This is not a passive tracking feature; it is a one-trip sharing option tied to a specific drive. Once shared, you can see details such as their route progress, estimated arrival time, and live movement while that shared drive is active, depending on the link or contact method used.

The exact steps can vary slightly by phone and Waze version, but the process usually starts after the driver has entered a destination and tapped Go now. During active navigation, Waze gives the driver a sharing option that lets them send the drive status to a contact or through another app. The person driving should only do this while parked or before the trip begins, since interacting with the phone while driving can be unsafe and illegal in some places.

Typical steps for the driver

  1. Open Waze on their phone.
  2. Search for the destination and start navigation.
  3. Tap the drive information area, ETA panel, or sharing option shown during the route.
  4. Select Share drive, Send ETA, or a similar option.
  5. Choose how to send it, such as a text message, WhatsApp, email, or a contact saved on the phone.
  6. Send the link or notification to you.

If the driver sends you a Waze link through a messaging app, you can usually open it on your phone to view the shared drive. If you have Waze installed, the link may open directly in the app. If you do not have Waze installed, it may open in a browser or prompt you to install the app, depending on the device and link format. In either case, the access is based on the driver’s shared trip, not on your ability to search for them inside Waze.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the driver can choose to share

  • Current trip progress: where they are along the active route.
  • ETA: Waze’s estimated arrival time, which may update as traffic changes.
  • Destination-based arrival details: enough information to understand when they are expected to arrive.
  • A temporary viewing link: a link that works for that shared drive rather than permanent access to their location.

Shared drive access normally ends when the trip ends, the driver stops navigation, or the shared session is no longer available. If the same person wants you to view a later trip, they need to share that new drive separately. This design helps keep Waze focused on trip coordination instead of continuous personal monitoring.

How to View a Shared Waze Drive or ETA

Once someone has intentionally shared their Waze drive with you, you can view their trip from the link or notification they sent. The shared view usually shows their current route progress, estimated time of arrival, destination, and any major delays Waze detects along the way. You are not “tracking” their phone in general; you are viewing the specific drive they chose to share, for as long as that shared trip remains active.

The most common way to open a shared Waze drive is by tapping the link you receive in a text message, messaging app, email, or another sharing method chosen by the driver. If you have Waze installed, the link may open in the Waze app. If not, it may open in a browser or prompt you to install Waze. In either case, you should only use the shared link for its intended purpose: checking the driver’s ETA and trip status without repeatedly calling or texting while they are driving.

What you may see in the shared drive view

  • ETA: The estimated arrival time based on live traffic, route changes, and reported incidents.
  • Trip progress: A real-time or near real-time indication of where the driver is along the route.
  • Destination: The place the driver selected for the shared trip.
  • Delays: Traffic, road closures, crashes, or other Waze-reported conditions that may affect arrival time.
  • Arrival updates: Changes to the ETA if the route gets faster or slower.

To view the ETA, open the shared link and wait for the trip details to load. If the driver is actively navigating, you should see the latest available arrival estimate. If Waze shows that the drive has ended, the driver may have arrived, stopped navigation, closed the app, lost connectivity, or ended sharing. Shared drive information is tied to that trip, so you should not expect the link to keep showing their location after the drive is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the link opens but does not update, refresh the page or close and reopen Waze. On a phone, make sure you have an internet connection and that the Waze app is up to date. If the link was sent a while ago, it may no longer be valid because the driver ended the trip or stopped sharing. You can ask the driver to resend the shared drive link when it is safe for them to do so, but avoid asking them to interact with their phone while driving.

Basic steps to view a shared Waze drive

  1. Open the message, email, or chat where the driver sent the Waze sharing link.
  2. Tap the shared drive link.
  3. Allow it to open in Waze or in your browser, depending on your device setup.
  4. Check the displayed ETA, route progress, and destination details.
  5. If the information appears stale, wait a moment, refresh, or ask for a new share only when the driver can respond safely.

Shared Waze viewing is designed for practical coordination, such as knowing when to meet someone, when to step outside for pickup, or whether a driver has been delayed. It is not a way to monitor someone continuously. The driver remains in control of whether they share, what trip they share, and when that sharing stops.

Why You Can’t Track Someone Without Sharing

Waze does not provide a way to search for a person, select their profile, and follow their live location whenever you want. A real-time drive view or ETA is only available when that driver deliberately shares a drive with you, typically for a specific trip. Without that action from the driver, Waze will not expose their route, speed, destination, or current position to another user.

This design protects both privacy and safety. Waze is a navigation app, not a people-tracking service. While the app may show general activity from nearby Wazers on the map, those icons are limited and are not meant to identify or monitor a specific person’s movements. Seeing a Wazer icon on the map is not the same as watching someone’s live drive, and it does not give you access to their personal trip details.

What Waze does not allow

  • No silent tracking: You cannot track someone in Waze without them choosing to share their drive or ETA.
  • No profile-based monitoring: You cannot open another person’s Waze account and view their current location on demand.
  • No hidden background sharing: A shared drive is not a permanent tracking permission for every future trip.
  • No bypass through contacts: Having someone saved in your phone contacts does not let you see their live Waze location automatically.
  • No access through username alone: Knowing a person’s Waze name or nickname does not give you their route or destination.

Shared drives are intentionally temporary. When someone sends you their Waze drive, the link or notification is tied to that active route. You may be able to see their ETA, progress, and arrival updates while the trip is underway, but access ends when the trip ends, the driver stops sharing, or the shared session is no longer available. This prevents a one-time share from turning into ongoing surveillance.

If you need to coordinate with someone, the right approach is to ask them to share their drive from Waze or send their ETA through a supported messaging app. For families, coworkers, or carpools that need ongoing location coordination, a dedicated location-sharing tool with clear permissions may be more appropriate. In every case, the person being located should know what is being shared, who can see it, and when sharing starts and stops.

Trying to work around Waze’s privacy limits by guessing locations, using another person’s phone, accessing their account, or installing monitoring software without permission can violate trust, app terms, and in some places the law. If someone has not shared their Waze drive with you, assume you do not have permission to view it. The safe and legitimate option is to request a share directly and respect their choice if they decline.

Troubleshooting Waze Location Sharing Issues

If a shared Waze drive or ETA is not opening correctly, the problem is usually related to permissions, connectivity, an expired link, or the way the drive was shared. Waze sharing is temporary and session-based, so you can only view the route or arrival time while the other person has actively shared that specific drive with you. If the link no longer works, ask the driver to send a fresh share from inside Waze after navigation has started.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the shared link first

Make sure you are opening the most recent link or notification the driver sent. If they changed destinations, stopped navigation, closed Waze, or ended the shared drive, the previous share may stop updating. Also confirm that you are opening the link on the device where Waze is installed, especially if the link arrived through a messaging app, email, or social platform. If it opens in a browser instead of the Waze app, try tapping the option to open it in Waze or copy the link into a message to yourself and open it again from your phone.

  • Ask for a new share: The driver should start navigation, tap the ETA or share option, and resend the drive.
  • Use the latest link: Older links may refer to a drive that has already ended or changed.
  • Open it on mobile: Shared drives are intended to work best through the Waze app on a phone.

Confirm app permissions and connection settings

Both people should check that Waze has the permissions it needs. The driver’s phone must allow Waze to access location while the app is in use, and in some cases background location access helps keep updates flowing if the phone is locked. If the driver has disabled mobile data, turned on a restrictive battery saver, or lost GPS signal in a tunnel, parking garage, or rural area, the shared ETA may pause or appear inaccurate until Waze reconnects.

Issue What to check
ETA is frozen The driver’s data connection, GPS signal, battery saver, and whether Waze is still navigating
Link will not open Whether Waze is installed, updated, and set to open supported links
No location appears Whether the driver actually shared the drive and has location permission enabled
Updates stopped suddenly Whether the driver arrived, canceled navigation, closed Waze, or ended sharing

Updating the Waze app can also resolve sharing problems, especially after phone operating system updates. Both the driver and viewer should install the latest version from the App Store or Google Play, then fully close and reopen Waze. If problems continue, restarting the phone can clear stuck GPS, notification, or app-link behavior. On Android, checking default app and link-opening settings may help if Waze links keep launching in a browser. On iPhone, confirm that Waze has location access under Privacy & Security settings and that cellular data is enabled for the app.

If everything appears correct but the shared drive still does not work, use another consent-based method to coordinate, such as asking the driver to resend their ETA, call hands-free, or share a location through another trusted app. The driver should not troubleshoot while actively driving; they can pull over safely or have a passenger adjust settings. Waze sharing is designed to give temporary visibility into a trip, not continuous tracking, so the simplest fix is often for the driver to restart navigation and intentionally share the drive again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I watch someone on Waze without them knowing?

No. Waze does not let you secretly track another person’s location or drive. You can only view someone’s real-time drive or ETA if they intentionally share it with you through Waze or another approved sharing option.

How does someone share their Waze drive with me?

The driver needs to start navigation in Waze, then use the share drive or send ETA option from the app. They can send the link through a messaging app, text, or another available sharing method. Once you open the link, you can see their shared route progress or estimated arrival details for that trip.

Do I need the Waze app to view someone’s shared drive?

In many cases, a shared Waze link can open in a browser or prompt you to open it in the Waze app, depending on your phone and the link type. Having Waze installed usually gives the best experience. If the link does not open correctly, ask the driver to resend it or try opening it on another device.

Can I keep watching someone after their trip ends?

No. Waze shared drives are tied to the active trip the person chose to share. When they arrive, stop navigation, or stop sharing, you should no longer be able to view their live drive information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if a Waze shared location or ETA is not updating?

Ask the driver to check that Waze is still open, navigation is active, and their phone has a stable data connection. They should also confirm that location permissions are enabled for Waze and that battery saver settings are not blocking background activity. If the link is old, have them send a fresh share drive or ETA link.

Bottom Line

You can watch someone on Waze only when they choose to share their drive or ETA with you. Waze does not provide a way to secretly track another person, so the right next step is to ask them to share their trip and then open the link or notification they send.

If the shared drive is not updating, check that both phones have a data connection, location permissions are enabled, and the Waze app is running properly. For safety, drivers should set up sharing before they start driving and avoid handling the phone on the road.
