The simplest way to watch live TV is to install a supported live-TV service app, sign in, and open its live guide. On a smart TV, use the television’s app store. On a phone or tablet, use the service’s mobile app. If you want the picture on a larger screen without installing a TV app, cast from a phone or computer to a compatible TV or streaming receiver.
This guide uses United States service examples. Compatibility, channel availability, plan terms, and app behavior vary by service, device model, operating-system version, and location. Check the selected service’s current device-support page before subscribing or purchasing hardware.

What you need before you start
Live TV over the internet requires four things: a live-TV subscription, a supported device, an internet connection, and a current app or browser experience. The exact combination depends on the route you choose.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A service: Examples in the United States include Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, Sling TV, and Fubo. Their channel lineups and plans are not interchangeable.
- A compatible device: This can be a smart TV, phone, tablet, computer, or streaming media player. Support is model- and software-specific.
- Internet access: The app needs network access, and casting requires the sending and receiving devices to communicate over the same Wi-Fi network.
- An account: You normally install or open the official app, then sign in with the account used for the subscription.
- Location information where required: Hulu states that location data is required to access Live TV on mobile devices with a Live TV subscription.
Do not assume that an app available on one television or phone is available on every model from that manufacturer. A device that no longer receives operating-system updates can also lose support even if its hardware still works.

Choose the viewing route that fits your equipment
| Route | Best when | Basic method | Main limitation to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart TV app | Your television has a supported app store and you want a self-contained setup | Find the service app, install it, sign in, and open its live guide | Exact TV model and operating-system support |
| Phone or tablet app | You want to watch away from the TV or use a portable screen | Install or open the service app and sign in | Mobile location requirements and device support |
| Cast from a phone or computer | You want to send live TV to a larger compatible screen | Put sender and receiver on the same Wi-Fi, choose Cast or AirPlay, and select the receiver | Compatible sender, receiver, app, and network |
| Streaming media player | Your TV lacks the app, has an outdated platform, or needs a separate receiver | Connect a supported player, install the service app, and sign in | Support for the specific player model and current software |
A streaming media player is a hardware category, not a guarantee that every model works with every service. Verify the exact model against the service’s current compatibility list.
How to watch live TV on a smart TV
1. Confirm the TV is supported
Before paying for a subscription, identify the television’s manufacturer, model number, and operating-system version. Open the service’s device-support information and look for that exact combination. “Smart TV” is not a single platform; two televisions sold under the same brand can run different systems or receive different app support.
2. Open the correct app store
Use the TV remote to open the television’s app store or app marketplace. Search for the service by its official name. For YouTube TV, install the separate YouTube TV application; the official help wording is explicit: “The YouTube TV app is different from the YouTube app.” Finding the regular YouTube app does not mean YouTube TV is installed.

3. Install and launch the app
- Search the TV’s app store for the live-TV service.
- Select the service’s official app and choose the install or download command.
- Wait for installation to finish, then open the app from the TV’s app list.
- Choose the sign-in option and authenticate with the account that holds the subscription.
- Open the app’s live section or guide and select a channel.
4. If the app is missing
An absent search result usually means the TV model, region, operating-system version, or service is not supported through that television platform. Do not install an unofficial package or assume that a factory reset will add compatibility. Check the service’s supported-device list and the TV manufacturer’s software-update options. If the TV cannot run the app, use a supported streaming media player or cast from a phone or computer instead.
5. Keep the TV software current
App support can depend on continuing operating-system updates. Sling, for example, says its app is compatible with listed devices and software versions that continue to receive manufacturer OS updates. Install available TV updates, restart the television, and then check the app store again. An update can restore normal operation, but it cannot turn an unsupported model into a supported one.

How to watch live TV on a phone or tablet
Install the service’s mobile app
- Open the official app store for your phone or tablet.
- Search for the live-TV service’s app, checking the publisher name before installing.
- Install or update the app, then open it.
- Sign in with the account associated with the Live TV subscription.
- Choose the live-TV tab or guide and select a program.
A phone or tablet can be the viewing screen itself, or it can act as the sender for casting to a TV. Those are separate uses: installing the mobile app does not automatically install the service on your television.
Allow location access when the service requires it
Hulu states that location data is required for Live TV access on mobile devices. If the app asks for location permission, review the request and enable the setting required by the service. If location access is denied or disabled, the mobile Live TV section may not open even when your account is active.
When mobile playback does not work
- Check that the app is updated and that the phone’s operating system is still supported.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account with the live-TV plan rather than a different account.
- Review the app’s location permission if the service requires location data.
- Switch between available networks to determine whether the problem is connectivity-specific.
- Restart the app and the phone before reinstalling it.
Exact mobile restrictions differ by service and are not established by a universal rule. Use the selected provider’s current help information for account, location, and device limits.
How to cast live TV from a phone or computer to a TV
Casting sends playback control from a phone or computer to a compatible receiving device. It is different from installing the service’s app directly on the television. You need a compatible sender, a compatible TV or streaming receiver, the service app or supported browser experience, and a working network.
YouTube TV casting steps
- Connect the phone or computer and the streaming device or TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open YouTube TV on the phone or computer and sign in.
- Start the live program you want to watch, or open the live guide.
- Select the Cast or AirPlay control shown by the app or playback interface.
- Choose the compatible receiving device from the list.
- Use the sender for playback controls, such as changing the program or stopping the cast.
YouTube TV’s documented casting method requires compatible devices and network access. If the receiver does not appear, first verify that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, then confirm that the receiver and app version are supported.

Why a receiver may not appear
- The phone and receiver are connected to different Wi-Fi networks, including separate guest and main networks.
- The TV or streaming player does not support the casting method being used.
- The app is not updated or the user is signed out.
- The receiver is asleep, powered off, or not connected to the network.
- A network setting is preventing devices from discovering one another.
Restart the app and receiver after correcting the network connection. If casting remains unavailable, install the service app directly on a supported TV or streaming player instead.
How to watch live TV with a streaming media player
When a player solves the problem
A separate player is useful when the TV’s built-in platform does not offer the service, has stopped receiving updates, or provides an unreliable app experience. The player becomes the app host and connects to the TV, usually through the television’s available video input.
Setup procedure
- Check the service’s compatibility page for the exact player model and supported software version.
- Connect the player to the TV and select the corresponding input.
- Complete the player’s network setup and install any required system updates.
- Open the player’s app store and search for the official live-TV service app.
- Install the app, launch it, and sign in.
- Open the live guide and test playback before relying on the setup.
Compatibility is specific to the service and model. A player that supports one live-TV app may not support another, and an older model can lose support when its manufacturer stops providing operating-system updates.
Player versus casting
Use a player app when you want the TV to work independently after setup. Use casting when you prefer to control playback from a phone or computer and the receiver supports the required protocol. Casting still depends on the sender remaining available and both devices sharing a functioning network.
How to compare live-TV services before subscribing
There is no universal winner because the right choice depends on the channels, location, and devices you actually use. Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, Sling TV, and Fubo publish service or device information, but current prices and channel lineups change and should be checked directly before purchase.

| Question | Why it matters | How to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Does it carry the channels you watch? | A lower price is irrelevant if the required channels are missing. | Review the provider’s current lineup for your location and plan. |
| Does it run on your existing TV? | Buying a subscription before checking compatibility can leave you without a viewing route. | Match the exact TV model and operating-system version to the support list. |
| Can you watch on your phone? | Mobile access may have location or operating-system requirements. | Read the mobile-device and location requirements for the plan. |
| Can you cast to your receiver? | Casting requires compatible sender and receiver hardware plus network discovery. | Confirm the service documents Cast or AirPlay support for your devices. |
| What is the total current cost? | Promotional terms, taxes, add-ons, and plan changes can alter the amount you pay. | Check the provider’s current checkout and plan details; do not rely on an undated price. |
| Will support continue on your hardware? | Apps can depend on manufacturer operating-system updates. | Check both the service’s device list and the manufacturer’s update status. |
Do not treat a published channel count or an old price as permanent. The available evidence does not establish a complete, date-stamped channel-by-channel or price comparison for these services.

- Start with the screen you already own. If the TV appears on the service’s supported list, install the app there.
- If the TV is unsupported, check a player. Select a streaming media player only after verifying its exact model and software version.
- If you mainly watch on the go, use the mobile app. Check location permissions and mobile support first.
- If you want occasional big-screen viewing, test casting. Confirm that the sender and receiver support the same casting method and can share one Wi-Fi network.
- Choose the subscription last. Compare the channels you need, your location, your route to the screen, and the provider’s current total cost.
This order prevents a common mismatch: paying for a service before discovering that the intended TV, player, or mobile device cannot run it.
Common problems and fixes
The app cannot be found on the TV
Check the exact model, region, and operating-system version against the provider’s support list. Install pending TV updates. If the app remains unavailable, use a supported player or cast from a compatible phone or computer.
The app opens but live channels are unavailable
Verify that the signed-in account includes Live TV, not only an on-demand plan. On mobile devices, review the service’s location requirement. If the account and location are correct, update or restart the app and consult the provider’s current service-status guidance.

Playback stops after a device update
Check whether the service still supports the new or old operating-system version. Manufacturer updates can change app compatibility, and older devices may no longer receive the updates required by the service. Reinstalling the app can clear a damaged installation, but it will not restore support that has ended.
You installed the wrong YouTube app
YouTube TV and the standard YouTube app are separate applications. Search the TV or player’s app store for YouTube TV specifically, then sign in with the account that has the YouTube TV subscription.
Privacy and account checks
Use the official app store listing and the provider’s own sign-in flow. Avoid entering credentials into unofficial apps that imitate a service name. On a shared TV or streaming player, sign out when the device belongs to a guest room, rental, or another household. Review location prompts on mobile devices so you understand which permissions the service requires for Live TV access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Live-TV services and device platforms change independently. A service can alter its channel lineup, plan terms, app requirements, or supported models; a TV or player manufacturer can end operating-system updates. Recheck compatibility when replacing hardware, changing plans, or troubleshooting a previously working setup.
