For the simplest chronological watch, finish House of the Dragon seasons 1, 2, and 3, then watch Game of Thrones seasons 1 through 8. HBO describes House of the Dragon as taking place 200 years before Game of Thrones. That gives you a reliable series-level order, but not an official episode-by-episode sequence that mixes both shows.
The practical plan is therefore straightforward: complete each season in its normal episode order, complete all three released House of the Dragon seasons first, and then begin Game of Thrones with season 1. Streaming availability is region-specific and can change, so verify the catalog immediately before you start.

Why House of the Dragon comes first
HBO’s official description gives the key relationship: House of the Dragon is “set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.” That is a broad placement for the series, not a promise that every scene can be fitted into a precisely calculated, day-by-day timeline.

The earlier setting is enough to determine the season-level order. All three seasons of House of the Dragon belong before the first season of Game of Thrones. Once you start Game of Thrones, continue through its seasons in their existing order. There is no evidence that a chronological viewing benefit comes from stopping partway through one show to insert episodes from the other.
This approach also avoids a common problem with fan-made viewing lists: they may try to infer exact dates or interleave episodes based on character ages, historical references, or production details. Those calculations are not an official viewing order. The dependable information is the relative position supplied by HBO: the prequel series first, followed by the later-set series.

The table is a season order, not an episode guide. Within a season, use the numbered episode sequence presented by your service. Avoid rearranging episodes because the official descriptions reviewed do not establish a cross-series episode timeline.
How to watch in chronological order
1. Make a two-part checklist
Before pressing play, write down two blocks: House of the Dragon seasons 1–3 and Game of Thrones seasons 1–8. Mark a season complete only after its finale. This prevents an autoplay queue from sending you into the wrong show when both series appear in the same search results.
2. Complete House of the Dragon season 1
Open the series page, select season 1, and use the platform’s default episode order. Do not switch to Game of Thrones between episodes or pause the season to begin the other series. The chronological logic depends on finishing the earlier-set series as a unit.
3. Continue with season 2
After season 1’s final episode, select season 2 from the same series page. Check that the season selector has actually changed; streaming apps sometimes return to the most recently watched episode rather than the next season. If you are watching with another person, agree on a shared stopping point so that one viewer does not accidentally move ahead.

4. Add season 3 before starting the later series
Season 3 is part of the recommended chronological sequence. Finish it before opening Game of Thrones season 1. HBO announced season 3 as an eight-episode season released weekly, with a stated premiere of June 21, 2026, and an announced finale date of August 9, 2026. Those dates describe HBO’s announced schedule; your service may display the episodes differently after the initial run.

5. Start Game of Thrones with season 1
Once all three House of the Dragon seasons are complete, open Game of Thrones and choose season 1. From this point, watch seasons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 in that order. There is no chronological reason to jump to a later season simply because you have already seen a thematically related event in the prequel.
6. Let the app retain your progress, but verify it
Autoplay is convenient, yet it can fail when a service changes profiles, marks an episode as watched, or promotes a different series. At the beginning of each viewing session, confirm three items:
- The series title is the one you intend to watch.
- The season number matches your checklist.
- The episode number is the next unwatched episode in that season.
Streaming availability and regional checks
As of October 13, 2026, HBO Max’s U.S. help page says that House of the Dragon seasons 1–2 and all eight seasons of Game of Thrones are available there. The same page records that House of the Dragon season 3 premiered on June 21, 2026, but the availability statement cited for the catalog lists seasons 1–2. Because those details can change and may reflect a page update in progress, check the current listing for season 3 before beginning the chronological run.
That help page is U.S.-specific. A subscription or catalog in another country can have different rights, episode availability, or release timing. A title appearing in a search result does not always mean every season is playable in your location, so open each season page and confirm that the episodes start successfully.
Catalogs are also volatile. A show can move, disappear temporarily, or be listed under a revised service name without changing the underlying chronology. Treat the service listing as a current-access check, not as evidence that the same lineup will remain available indefinitely.

Chronological order versus release order
There are two sensible ways to approach the franchise, but they serve different goals.

The chronological choice is the direct answer to this guide’s title. Release order is not a competing episode chronology; it is simply an alternative viewing philosophy. Neither option requires interleaving episodes.
Why you should not interleave episodes
An interleaved list would need reliable start and end points for every episode in both series. The official information available here does not provide those dates or a sanctioned crossover schedule. HBO’s 200-year statement establishes the relationship between the shows, but it is not precise enough to tell you whether one particular episode should precede another particular episode.

You will avoid stopping in the middle of a story, reduce the chance of spoilers caused by an incorrectly placed episode, and follow the only season-level sequence directly supported by HBO’s description.
What the season 3 schedule means for your plan
HBO announced House of the Dragon season 3 as an eight-episode season with weekly releases. The announced premiere date was June 21, 2026, and the announced finale date was August 9, 2026. If you watched during the original weekly run, you could not complete the chronological order until the finale became available.
If you are watching after the weekly run, the important check is whether your service now offers all eight episodes. A page that mentions the premiere does not by itself prove that every episode is currently playable. Open the season selector, look for the complete episode list, and verify that the final episode can be started before committing to the full sequence.

Do not infer a different episode count or finale date from a third-party playlist. Use HBO’s announced eight-episode figure and dates as the schedule reference, while recognizing that services may display a season after its original broadcast window in a different way.

You can read it before watching, after completing the prequel, or skip it entirely and still follow the season order above.
The book and the television series are different formats, so reading it should not be treated as a substitute for watching a season or as a reason to rearrange episodes. Use one shared order
If several people are watching together, agree that the group will follow the 11-position checklist. A viewer who starts Game of Thrones early can reveal information intended to arrive later in the chronological plan, even if the two shows are set far apart.
Disable automatic recommendations when necessary
After a finale, a service may recommend the other series, a recap, or a behind-the-scenes program. Select the next season manually from your checklist instead of assuming the first recommendation is the correct chronological step.
Separate watchlists by series
Create one list for House of the Dragon and another for Game of Thrones, or use a note with the season numbers. This is especially useful when an app groups both programs under a shared franchise page and hides the season selector behind a single “play” button.

Pause at season boundaries
A season boundary is the safest place to stop. Record the last completed season, close the app, and resume from the next numbered season. There is no advantage to creating an artificial break inside a season because no official interleaving order has been established.
Troubleshooting the most common ordering mistakes
The app starts Game of Thrones first
Back out of autoplay, search for House of the Dragon directly, and select season 1. Franchise hubs often prioritize the older, better-known title rather than the earlier story in fictional chronology.
Season 3 is missing
Confirm your country and subscription, then check the service’s help page and the individual season listing. The cited HBO Max page is for the United States and, as of October 13, 2026, explicitly lists seasons 1–2 while recording the season 3 premiere. Do not assume that a premiere notice means the complete season is available in your catalog.

Use the season checklist rather than the “continue watching” row. Mark the last episode you personally completed, then reopen that season and select the next episode manually. This prevents another profile’s progress or an accidental preview from changing your place.
You started with release order by mistake
There is no need to restart automatically. If your priority is strict chronology and you have watched any Game of Thrones episodes, note your stopping point and decide whether to restart with House of the Dragon or continue in release order. The two approaches are distinct viewing choices; the chronological sequence itself remains the 11-season list above.
You found a fan-made mixed timeline
Check whether it cites an official episode-level schedule. Without one, treat the list as an interpretation rather than a definitive order. The reliable alternative is to finish each House of the Dragon season, then proceed through Game of Thrones season by season.
